I remember that as a child my family would drive to a national park and go camping & fishing... Every year! Well you can't do that now... Stay at home and watch TV!

The best fishing was at Manning Provincial Park in Canada... I caught a lot of fish and mom cooked them... One of the difference between actually doing things and watching them on TV is that: When when actually fishing, the fishes smell! After you catch the fish you have to kill it... You bend the head backwards until they spinal cord snaps... I'm not kidding! The water is really cold... The forest is filled with little chirping birds... And when you provide food for your family there's a satisfaction that is deeply biological... For millions of years humans have hunted and fished in order to survive and I was part of that chain... You don't get that on TV! 

Some other fabulous places that we drove to: Yosemite, Big Sur, Mount Lassen, the World's Fair in Seattle, Mount Shasta, Bidwell Park in Chico 

I actually drove to Seattle a couple of times... As a child we went to the World's Fair... And that was epic... It was all about the World of Tomorrow! And then later we would go there for Christmas with the family because my wife's cousins work for Boeing... Unless they didn't get the contract and then he worked for Lockheed... And then... Marijuana was legalized in the state of Washington and I was retired, had time on my hands, money in my wallet... And I went up there and ate two cannabis cookies, drank a really strong cup of coffee... And rode the Monorail to the Experience Music Pavilion... An Interactive part of the World's Fair dedicated to the history of Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain...  It had a place where you could play musical instruments with other tourists... Specifically... A long row of tuned bells that you could bang on... Very popular with the children...

Since I Don't Own a Car, all those TV advertisements are meaningless to me... Car insurance, purchasing a new car or truck, ambulance chaser lawyers, gas prices... 

I see on TV news that many people are spending a lot of money on gasoline for their cars... Not me... 

I see on TV news that many people are upset about the quality of airline travel in the USA... Not me...

I always turn the sound off when I'm watching TV news because at any instant I can turn it on and hear what they're saying but the vast majority of the time it's just insane babbling... I can't think of any circumstances when I would voluntarily want to hear what Trump has to say... Or any of his evil minions... 

So anyway, I don't hear the sound of all those automobile insurance commercials... And some of them are especially crazy... The Li Mu Emu... And there's a soap opera drama of a half a dozen people dressed in white clothes selling Progressive Auto Insurance... Since I do take a LYFT ride about four times a year, I programmed the phone number for an ambulance Chaser lawyer into my phone... One of those lawyers specializes in lawsuits involving Uber or Lyft... And that advertisement got my attention...

But it's extremely important to not have the sound on during the commercials where they're advertising doctor drugs... Accidentally I have heard the people talking in the background about the side effects... Quite often the side effects of psych meds is suicide... Gee I sure don't want to take that drug... 

And evidently there's a huge market for people that want to show off more skin when they go swimming... Tiny bikinis... Even tinier bikinis... Because if they clear up the fungus infection on their skin then they can show it off... Now that's a product that I don't think I'll ever buy...

I've Lived a "Car Free" life for decades... I rode the bus to and from work in both San Jose and Eureka... Actually, it was a lot of fun... I'd sit in the back and talk to women... Also... It's illegal to drink and drive... But there's no law about drinking and riding the bus...

another thing that's kind of funny is it now that I've already voted I'm starting to get a lot of junk mail advertising candidates... It's too late to change my mind now suckers... And there's a lot of TV advertisements... In the California governor's race there's a lot of ads promoting Tom's tires and then there's a lot of ads opposing Tom's tires... I voted for the guy who's the current mayor of San Jose... 

I must admit that my vote was swayed by the anti Tom's tires advertisements I saw last month... I figured that anyone that has a billion dollars has got a done Dirty deeds in order to get it... Investing in oil companies, for profit prisons... Income tax evasion using the Cayman Islands... 

And it bug me that for months there were at least 10 TV advertisements a day for Tom's tires when no one else was advertising at all... Proof that he had a tremendous amount of money and really wanted to buy the job of being governor of California... I can't vote for that guy... 

For your information "Tom's tires" is a joke... His real name is Tom Steyer...

When I'm watching TV I've noticed a very popular hairstyle on the women... Long blonde hair and short dark roots... They're attempting to pretend that their ancestors grew up in northern Europe but actual biology reveals that they are mud people... Their ancestors grew up a little bit closer to the Equator than they really want to admit... So they go with that Nazi look!

A little fact from world history... The Nazis were really into forced breeding of white people... They chose a lot of men soldiers that had blonde hair and then "allowed" them to impregnate women from Scandinavia... In order to breed a master race... Now that sounds like a crazy thing to do until you realize that a singer from ABBA is one of those children... Surprisingly, it's not the singer with the blonde hair... It's the other one! So no matter what kind of crazy history you got in your parents generation... Sometimes the children turn out to be excellent!

That makes me question the entire concept of genetic engineering... Maybe we should design better humans... It seems like a perfect task for artificial intelligence... You got DNA with four different bases making trillions of combinations... What if we had a machine learn how to create better people?

That's the plot of the book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley... And everybody focuses on the first half of that book... But the last half is all about him going to the American southwest and participating in peyote ceremonies... Huh!

I must say that peyote really helped a friend of mine who is a Vietnam veteran... And he was upset over the fact that men under his command died... PTSD for years... Maybe decades... But then he went to a sweat lodge and ate peyote... He had the realization that it was not his fault that the men died... It was Lyndon Johnson's fault... It was Richard Nixon's fault... And in fact, it was John F Kennedy's fault as well... The men died because they were sent Halfway Around the World to kill people for no reason... Not his choice... 

And he found inner peace... Of course... It really helped that he was an American Indian and he went to an inter-tribal event where he was accepted as a brother...

AIDS Walk 2026 New York City Today. Why? Hasn't AIDS been cured? There are many "HIV undetectable" drugs for sale... 

My TV gets local news from New York City... And I find it kind of worthy because they do a lot of interesting things there... I always had a lot of fun when I went to visit as a tourist... 

Why are they having an AIDS Walk Today? Anyone can go get a prescription for HIV undetectable medicine ( I suppose) and so AIDS would be a voluntary disease... Of course, it's always been a voluntary disease... The vast majority of the cases are with gay men and all you have to do is never participate in gay men sex... DUH... How the disease is spread has been known for over 50 years...

It is not widespread amongst gay women... 

I remember one of the smart things that Dianne Feinstein did when she was mayor of San Francisco was to close down the bath houses that were frequented by gay men... Because it was a public health hazard... Men would go there and spread AIDS to each other and then die... And as the mayor of the city she felt it was her responsibility to keep the citizens alive... Even if they behaved stupidly...

I Tipped those Guys $10 Each... and they were really Thankful. Yes, I Could Have Spent a Fortune at Sears or KMART but... I Prefer to Keep The Money IN MY WALLET. I Like Employing Guys That Live At The Rescue Mission. The Mission Does Good Work Here in Eureka and I've Met a LOT of Real People That They Help. I did buy new Beds at Sears. Somehow, those were just too Personal to Buy Used... also, I Do Not Buy Used Underwear... BUT, Clothes? YES! It's actually fun to find thrift stores in Super Rich Neighborhoods and Live Like the TV Show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous..." A Great Place to Shop is North Shore Lake Tahoe... Snow Bunnies often Donate Extra Stuff When the Season is Over... and There is Also DUMPSTER DIVING in College Towns at the End of the School Year... FREE STUFF!

They said that Used Stuff Still Requires Ecological Damage to Exist at All... If you're not from California, here are some important things you need to know about our fires:

Most of our fires are grass fires, not forest fires. In the summer, our grass turns a beautiful golden color all over the state. Rolling, golden hills will always mean "home" to me. Even if California's forests were "raked" daily, the fires would still be happening.

The state of California manages just 3% of our forest land. The federal government manages most of it. So when Trump says that California's forest land is mismanaged, think: "

If you lived in California in the 80s, you might remember people saying that California would basically burn down every year if we did not do something about "global warming," as we called it at the time. And here we are.

California is huge. We have the world's fifth largest economy, surpassed only by the US as a whole, China, Japan, and Germany. California's economy is larger than every other nation on earth. When you hear that we're "failing" and a "shithole," that's political propaganda. Economically, geographically, and demographically, we are one of the most diverse political entities on the planet.

This means that very little you can say about California applies to the state as a whole. Life in San Francisco resembles life in London more than it resembles life in Bakersfield. Part of the beauty and allure of California is that, no matter what you want, we have it. Metropolitan cities are an hour away from rolling farmland, which is an hour away from the desert, which is a few hours away from snow-capped mountains. Get in your car and drive in any direction for a few hours and you'll see six different Californias.

People come here from all over the world, and that's our strength. We are your future-- no one race or ethnicity has a majority here, although Latinx people have the plurality, which will soon be true for America as a whole. But even "Latinx" is a category so broad as to be almost meaningless. California was once Mexico, so people of Mexican descent have always had the demographoc upper hand, but you can't pick up a square mile of California anywhere without getting Salvadorans and Guatemalans in that mix, along with Syrians, Lebanese, Persians, Ethiopians, people from the Caribbean, Chinese, Filipinx, and so much more. That diversity has always been one of our greatest strengths. You've heard of Sutter's Mill, where gold was first discovered? It's in the town of Coloma, which was almost entirely owned by a family of formerly enslaved Black people. You can still see the son's smithy and several other historic family buildings if you go there, which I recommend that you do! The whole town is basically a California history field trip.

California has always opened her arms to the world, and it's made us stronger, better, wealthier, and more beautiful.

We have nothing but love to give the rest of the United States. Well, that and our significant tax contributions (we pay more to the federal government than we get back), ports, industry, films, and music. Oh, and we produce the most food of any state. But mostly love.

So the next time someone tries to blame grass fires caused by lightning on "bad forest management," stand up for the Golden State, OK?

Better colonoscopy procedure. Currently, doctors shove a TV Camera up your anus... Hopefully, the inside of the colon has no digested food. Why not use a hose to wash the inside of the colon?

Often the prep fails to clean out the colon and the doctor can't see anything... So the operation is a total failure... And then they do it again later... Increasing the payments to the doctor and the hospital but providing nothing for the patient... Sure, they failed but you still pay..... Or your insurance pays...

The TV Camera that they shove up your anus is on the end of a long flexible tube... Why not use that tube to wash the inside of the colon with water? Just rinse the inside of the colon so that the doctor can see what's going on... This is not rocket science... Forcing water through a hose is pretty common... The water and collected food residue could be put in a bucket and then disposed of safely...

The only good thing about my colonoscopy was that I got to take the drug that killed Michael Jackson... I was curious what that drug felt like... And in fact, it felt like nothing at all... The doctor said: I'm going to give you this anesthetic... And then instantly... I woke up in the recovery room... Not knowing if I had had a colonoscopy or not... So I asked the nurse and she said: yes you're all done. would you like a cup of coffee? I had no knowledge at all of anything that had happened... Makes me wonder why Michael Jackson wanted that drug... To me, if you're going to take drugs you ought to have fun... Or meet God... Or something...

Every once in a while, it’s good to get an update on the state of the world from someone with a point of view a bit more enlightened than some periodical or the evening news. Leonard Cohen delivered just such an update on his 1988 classic “Everybody Knows,” a song that was thrillingly comprehensive in its overview then and somehow remains chillingly accurate now about the threats facing this planet and the foibles of the poor fools who inhabit it.

Cohen is not alone in deserving credit for this cynical masterpiece. He wrote the lyrics and handed them off to his former backing singer Sharon Robinson in the first of what would become many songwriting collaborations between the pair. Speaking to Uncut magazine, Robinson remembered the approach she took once she got a hold of the Canadian Bard’s words. “”It’s a protest song, so Leonard wanted something tough,” she said. “I’d bring home verses, and go to the grand piano in my living room, as his lyrics require that purity of melody.”

The song was included on an album (I’m Your Man) which found Cohen delving deeply into a synthesizer-based sound. The synths on “Everybody Knows” lurch forward into the abyss while Cohen’s voice booms forth with its warnings as if it belonged to an ancient oracle. Some flashy Spanish guitar adds just the right counterpoint to the arrangement, keeping the music from getting too somber.

Cohen doesn’t waste any time with tact or restraint, setting the tone in his opening lines: “Everybody knows that the dice are loaded/Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed/Everybody knows that the war is over/Everybody knows the good guys lost.” This generalized overview soon gives way to more specific concerns, as the relentless lyrics touch on greed, racism, and drugs. One verse seems to specifically reference the AIDS crisis, then at its height, as Cohen sings of a coming plague, meters to count sexual partners, and how “the naked man and woman/Are just a shining artifact of the past.”

Yet he also brings things down to a personal level with a verse about infidelity between two lovers. “Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful/Ah, give or take a night or two,” he sings. And it wouldn’t be a Cohen song if he didn’t bring spiritual concerns into it, with references to Calvary (juxtaposed ironically with Malibu beaches) and the Sacred Heart. Whether that heart belongs to Jesus or Leonard is never revealed, but, at song’s end, it’s poised to explode all over the whole sordid scene.

Cohen also makes room for flashes of mischievous wit, like when he implies that the death of a parent and the death of a dog are equally disturbing. Running through this litany of horrors is a subtle criticism of those who ignore it all in favor of their own self-interested pursuits: “Everybody’s talking to their pockets/Everybody wants a box of chocolates/And a long-stemmed rose.”

The repetition of the title phrase suggests that Cohen has not been blessed with some unique power of perception, but that these truths should be evident to anyone who walks through the world with even an ounce of coherence. “Everybody Knows” may not deliver news on the state of the world that anyone would want to hear, but, thanks to Cohen’s eloquent words and seductive delivery, you never tire of listening to it.
