What have you done to decrease your dependence on using oil? a FaceBorg Discussion With Many Good Ideas!

Plastic is made from Oil. I reduced my use of Plastic by stopping buying water in Bottles... Got a Filter Pitcher instead. Stopped Drinking COKE Too...

JB Commented:
I don't use a vehicles bigger than I need for the situation. I have a bicycle, e-bike, motorcycle, and SUV. Mostly for my own personal enjoyment but it does save lots of gas. I also live in a basement apartment because it suits me better than a house. I use rechargeable LED lights that go on and off by themselves most of the time.

JB SAID:
Some of the things I've done to decrease my carbon footprint.
Using LED Lighting
Using one room at a time during the cooling season.
Using a well-maintained fuel efficient 4-cylinder.
Using LPG instead of oil
Using a tankless:
Heating & Hot Water system.
Working at Home

SE SAID:
all electric house fed by nuclear plant, 50 mpg hybrid car, 24 solar panels.

DF SAID:
Nothin....I'm keep'n my cadillac. my furnace is running as we speak. 'central alberta'. Alberta is oil country. I do my part to keep the industry going. Oil, means a good life, good solid high paying jobs. The Big machine runs on oil.

JW SAID:
I've stopped flying overseas. I use the car only 2xs a week (it's a 2017 and there are fewer than 23,000 miles on her). I stopped taking showers every day (actually, pandemic led me to that). I collect rain water for toilets and plants. I compost. Buy local.

GG SAID:
Drive only when necessary, find the most fuel efficient way to drive somewhere and never drive during rush hours. I have a 2010 Mazda 3, I bought in 2009, I have only about 60,000 miles on it.

I SAID:
Drive My Car Less... I Hardly Go anywhere anymore... and when I do, I have a valid reason... I stopped Flying in Jet Airplanes. The Last Flight was in 2001 to meet my New In-Laws... I Have Not Gotten Married Since then so... No Real Reason to Fly! We Have our Family Christmas Party on Zoom... Years ago everyone drove to Our Uncle's House...

GJ SAID:
Well before 2010, 100% renewable energy electricity plan.
2011 installed solar panels on the roof.
2017 bought an all electric car, which I charge at home.
2023 turned off the natural gas to the house.

OWK SAID:
Nothing. We rent. But we don't really drive. But depend on Walmart and Amazon to deliver. So I guess we depend on them to find efficient ways of delivering our stuff. So that is something.

Buying Used Stuff at Thrift Stores DOES NOT CAUSE ECOLOGICAL DAMAGE Like Buying New Stuff Does. When You Buy a New Product, the Corporation Has to Replace It.

They Mine Raw Materials, grow plants (like cotton) using pesticides and herbicides, Log Forests, Employ Slave Laborers in the Orient, Burn Gasoline Shipping the Plastic Crap Here From China... and on and on and on... Used Products ALREADY EXIST and so Buying Stuff at The Eureka Rescue Mission Thrift Shop (my local store) does NOT Harm the Planet. Actually, They Hire Local People to Work as Clerks and Do Delivery. We Bought ALL our Living Room Furniture there. Three Chairs and a Sofa... and Men Delivered It Upstairs in Our Home. NO WAY could I Move those Heavy Objects Up That Staircase... I Tipped those Guys $10 Each... and they were really Thankful. Yes, I Could Have Spent a Fortune at Sears or KMART but... I Prefer to Keep The Money IN MY WALLET. I Like Employing Guys That Live At The Rescue Mission. The Mission Does Good Work Here in Eureka and I've Met a LOT of Real People That They Help. I did buy new Beds at Sears. Somehow, those were just too Personal to Buy Used... also, I Do Not Buy Used Underwear... BUT, Clothes? YES! It's actually fun to find thrift stores in Super Rich Neighborhoods and Live Like the TV Show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous..." A Great Place to Shop is North Shore Lake Tahoe... Snow Bunnies often Donate Extra Stuff When the Season is Over... and There is Also DUMPSTER DIVING in College Towns at the End of the School Year... FREE STUFF!

Oddly, I Expressed These Opinions during a Group Discussion at an Ecology Class at Humboldt State University and ALL THE OTHER STUDENTS SAID I WAS WRONG... They said that Used Stuff Still Requires Ecological Damage to Exist at All... I tried to explain that the Manufacturing Damage Happened IN THE PAST and it is impossible to Change History but Buying New Stuff CAUSES Purchasing Agents at Corporations to Hire People to Create New Stuff IN THE FUTURE to Fill the Shelves At The Store. No One Grasped the Concept. But I Did Make The Other Students Think. and That's a Good Thing. It's a difficult concept... I Wish I Could Explain it in a Shorter Sentence... Maybe YOU can Re-Write the Concept Better and Post it in the Comments Section... Thanks!

and then I read this On Facebook... All About California and Forest fires...

If you're not from California, here are some important things you need to know about our fires:
Most of our fires are grass fires, not forest fires. In the summer, our grass turns a beautiful golden color all over the state. Rolling, golden hills will always mean "home" to me. Even if California's forests were "raked" daily, the fires would still be happening.
The state of California manages just 3% of our forest land. The federal government manages most of it. So when Trump says that California's forest land is mismanaged, think: "
Congratulations
; you just played yourself."
If you lived in California in the 80s, you might remember people saying that California would basically burn down every year if we did not do something about "global warming," as we called it at the time. And here we are.
California is huge. We have the world's fifth largest economy, surpassed only by the US as a whole, China, Japan, and Germany. California's economy is larger than every other nation on earth. When you hear that we're "failing" and a "shithole," that's political propaganda. Economically, geographically, and demographically, we are one of the most diverse political entities on the planet.
This means that very little you can say about California applies to the state as a whole. Life in San Francisco resembles life in London more than it resembles life in Bakersfield. Part of the beauty and allure of California is that, no matter what you want, we have it. Metropolitan cities are an hour away from rolling farmland, which is an hour away from the desert, which is a few hours away from snow-capped mountains. Get in your car and drive in any direction for a few hours and you'll see six different Californias.
People come here from all over the world, and that's our strength. We are your future-- no one race or ethnicity has a majority here, although Latinx people have the plurality, which will soon be true for America as a whole. But even "Latinx" is a category so broad as to be almost meaningless. California was once Mexico, so people of Mexican descent have always had the demographoc upper hand, but you can't pick up a square mile of California anywhere without getting Salvadorans and Guatemalans in that mix, along with Syrians, Lebanese, Persians, Ethiopians, people from the Caribbean, Chinese, Filipinx, and so much more. That diversity has always been one of our greatest strengths. You've heard of Sutter's Mill, where gold was first discovered? It's in the town of Coloma, which was almost entirely owned by a family of formerly enslaved Black people. You can still see the son's smithy and several other historic family buildings if you go there, which I recommend that you do! The whole town is basically a California history field trip.
California has always opened her arms to the world, and it's made us stronger, better, wealthier, and more beautiful.
We have nothing but love to give the rest of the United States. Well, that and our significant tax contributions (we pay more to the federal government than we get back), ports, industry, films, and music. Oh, and we produce the most food of any state. But mostly love.
So the next time someone tries to blame grass fires caused by lightning on "bad forest management," stand up for the Golden State, OK?

and I Replied:

I remember that TV Interview with Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsom and Trump... Trump was speaking of the Fire That Happened in the town of "PLEASURE" - The Actual Fire happened in the town of "PARADISE" - A Classic Example of An Old Person with a FRIED BRAIN... The meanings of the words are similar and they reside in the same location of the brain... and When Trump attempted to DO DATA RETRIEVAL of the NAME of the Town He was standing in... There was a Data Error and the Wrong word popped out of his mouth... I am a 67 Year old man and some "Senior Moments" have happened in my life... BUT... I'm retired and errors just don't matter when you're retired... That's WHY It's Really Important for OLD PEOPLE to Retire... and GET OUT of Politics... Look at Biden... He's Freaking Senile... NOT as Bad as Trump but... Joe really ought to be sitting near the wood burning stove at the country store and... babble about "Kids These Days"

and she said:
Yeah, it's no big deal when an older person accidentally says the wrong word. But someone like that should not be President of the United States. The president needs to be able to address the nation in a clear and articulate manner. But if they talk in word salad, people get confused and misinterpret some of what they said. And that's a problem with someone as prominent and important as the president, because people are listening to them and looking to them for guidance. So it's not a job for anyone who can't articulate properly.

I replied:

What I've noticed is sometimes it takes me a week to remember someone's name... for example: the editor of the school newspaper at HSU... I really admired her for being like Woodward and Bernstein... Well, I'm certain to remember her NOW... Eileen McGee, KHDU radio, Arcata, California (she also worked at the School Radio Station) https://www.grassrootspeace.org/depleted_uranium_rokke_03.html

On a different Subject!

SE Said: People who aren't affected by the spring time change must be the kind of people who can fall asleep at the drop of a hat, any time, anywhere. Just close their eyes and drop off to sleep. But those of us who are strongly affected by the time change are usually people who can't sleep unless we're actually TIRED. I've always wished I was one of those people who can just shut my eyes and go to sleep any time, anywhere. It must be nice to be able to sleep so easily. But for me, getting enough sleep is a constant struggle. It's not that I don't like extra daylight at the end of the day, but it comes at the expense of precious sleep. It's already 6:15, but it's so LIGHT outside. I should be thinking about dinner, and after that I've got to think about winding down and getting to bed at around 10. But with all this extra daylight, I won't feel tired until probably 11 or 12. Then 6am becomes 5am, and tomorrow is the day it's really going to hit me. I wish we could do this in April like we used to until 2007. I've never understood why they moved it to March. It's too early for this.

I Replied: I didn't notice it at all this year... I generally wake up about 3 AM after going to sleep at 8 PM... But all those numbers are approximate... Random! I do watch Jeopardy! from 7 to 7:30 and My Care Giver makes me a snack after that... anyway... This morning I woke up and Read the time on my Computer... and just accepted that it was accurate... and went out to the Dining Room Table at 4 AM because they won't serve me coffee before then... The care givers like to sleep at night and they won't get out of bed before 4... That Day Shift Lady was late because the time change caught her unaware... she was flustered... and my housemate didn't show up for breakfast until an hour late because he wears a watch... and the watch was an hour off today... I don't own a watch... When I retired I was NO LONGER a Slave to Time. No Alarm Clock Either.

GRATEFUL DEAD: The motif of a cycle of folk tales which begin with the hero coming upon a group of people ill-treating or refusing to bury the corpse of a man who had died without paying his debts. He gives his last penny, either to pay the man’s debts or to give him a decent burial. Within a few hours he meets with a travelling companion who aids him in some impossible task, gets him a fortune or saves his life. The story ends with the companion disclosing himself as the man whose corpse the hero had befriended.(the Funk and Wagnalls New Practical Standard Dictionary, Britannica World Language Edition.).

and then a Fellow Wrote About Los Gatos, CA.
Where we grew Up in the 1950s & 1960s

Tme warp…
In the 50’s and 60’s, Los Gatos was the quintessential little town, framed by mountains, bigger towns and cities and dotted with orchards and little industries, a model town that, except for location could have been almost any town in the nation at the time. People living their post war lives and doing what needed to be done, raising families, working and giving thanks for the peaceful times.
Television was replacing the radio, so for the first time we could see what life was like outside our little town… Big city life was now in our living room with Lucy and Ethel, Ralph Kramden and Alice, (Alice who did not get there herself, but did have many opportunities to go to the moon) Life was good. America by and large was great. I must have won life’s lottery, getting to grow up in Los Gatos at a time when it was small, personal and well, Just wonderful.
Small towns… every time I get to a small town I am drawn back to those days of my youth and taken to some location that except in time could have been my little town. Recently having the occasion to wander into Sonora Lumber (in Sonora CA)… .parking out back and entering an old wooden building with a tin roof in which were rows of wooden shelves lined with hardware, tools, nails and all the things needed to mend, bend and build something. Immediately I was transported to Sterling Lumber Company (University Ave across from the university Ave school aka old town)… almost tripping on the knots in the wood floor that raised because they were harder than the surrounding softer wood, that had been worn off by the shuffle of work boots that moved over the floor for decades. Looking further the “better” lumber and moldings are in racks either standing up or pushed into long deep bins that keep the material straight and out of the sun, there is a walkway for the second tier and a rolling ladder to access some of the uppermost bins. The task of loading these bins is time consuming and virtually a lost art with the cost of labor and short supply of help these days. The help nowadays wear jeans and tee shirts missing was the lumber aprons the men would wear that protected them and their clothing the aprons were long and had pouches that held tape measures and lumber crayons (keel) and the blue work shirt with two snap down pockets. The current patrons mostly have trucks that while old, function with make shift lumber racks and such to haul away their days working materials, unlike Sterling lumber/Templeman’s hardware…
Trucks were somewhat scarce in the 50s , a truck was a work truck and not a weekend cruiser/camper/ toy hauler like we know now. Nope, if you had a truck you were working, or hauling*. If you didn’t have a truck or could borrow one you would take a long piece off sisal twine** and lash that plywood to the top of the old Chrysler and head out. Probably all the old guys worked together on some project or two as they all seemed to know each other… Walt Pearce and Jack Vodden worked at Sterling and I recall my dad working with Tom Sims, Walt (?) Lochner, Pete Buchner, and the Wallace’s who had a cabinet shop up by Saint Clairs retreat, and had a sideline making cabinets and props for magicians. To many names to remember.
Unlike the current building supply big box stores, I ordered my 6 bags of sand, and the clerk wrote it out on a tag and the yard guy loaded it for me and said thanks before heading off to the next person waiting for something… Small Town, big people, big hearts and occasionally if we open our senses we can slip back into our youth and get that sense of what we had.
* Sisal twine….This stuff was pretty strong, and you would triple or quadruple the strands to form a rope like. The oily smell is unique, and the sisal would give you a splinter if you slide it through your hands. It was always interesting (scary too) to go up Highway 17 and see a long bunch of wood wrapped to the top of a car. The plastic stuff that replaced is just not as good.
** Uncle Chuck (Adams), had some kind of old pickup and once a week or so on the way home (just below Call of the Wild) he would load the back full with $100 worth of groceries, today that $100 bucks of food wouldn’t fill the passenger seat. Or it might be full of firewood, or something to burn in the big old fireplaces in the log cabin.
