and then... I read this Long Post about FAKE PATRIOTS... Makes Sense to Me...
SE SAID: Nowadays, people call themselves "patriots" while they act like selfish jerks. They have no idea what it means to be patriotic. It isn't patriotic to refuse to follow health guidelines during a pandemic. It IS patriotic to do your part to protect your fellow Americans from getting sick. It also is NOT patriotic to carry guns with you everywhere you go, and it's NOT patriotic to make fun of people who are uncomfortable around your guns. It's also not patriotic to ridicule those who have different political opinions than you. We've always had two parties in this country, and one is not more patriotic than the other. You want to know what IS patriotic? Previous generations actually lined up to enlist in the military because they WANTED to fight in World War I and World War II. Nobody had to force them to enlist, they WANTED to, and they did so voluntarily because they WANTED to make sacrifices for their country. THAT'S what it means to be patriotic. When I read about the way it used to be in this country, it makes me so sad that it's changed so much. Our own citizens stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 to try to stop the counting of the electoral votes, therefore interfering with our democracy - and those people view themselves as patriots. Would they voluntarily enlist in the military if we were to go to war? I'm guessing not. Those types of fake "patriots" don't care about their country, they only care about themselves. That's the opposite of what it means to be a patriot.
RB: Look at the states that are behind in vaccinations . There is a pattern , I don’t think I need to say it we all know. They will not change ever. Cause like you say selfish.
MK: It blows my mind at how many groups and sub groups of armed people like the Oathkeepers exist with their own definitions of what “patriotism” is.
CF: Yep. It's a weird flex. Funny, I was just thinking about this while in my car yesterday. If I see an American flag somewhere nowadays, like on a bumper sticker or something, I don't immediately associate it with patriotism; I associate it with negative things, like bullying, petulance, ignorance, even terrorism. It's sad. The people who flaunt it like it's a fashion statement, rather than revering it, give it a bad name.
SE: Yeah, it really saddens me the way some of the most UN-American people have co-opted the American flag as the symbol of their unpatriotic beliefs. They are the ones who stormed the Capitol, who want to overturn the results of a legitimate Presidential election...and if they had their way, they'd have a fascist dictatorship instead of a democracy. They are also talking about civil war if they don't get to re-instate their leader, who legitimately lost the election. These people proudly wave our flag and refer to themselves as "patriots."
VK: Didn't Donald himself get out of enlisting or some crap like that?
SE: Yeah, I'm pretty sure he did, but I'd have to read up on the details.
JD: he avoided getting drafted to go to Vietnam by having a family doctor say he couldn’t fight because of “bone spurs”. He’s ridiculous

DL: well there was a draft and you would go to jail if you didn't report, but unlike Vietnam you were fighting for the planet, so many wanted to join the fight! the way we treat our all volunteer veterans it's hard to believe we even have a military at all !!
