Last week the President of the United States said there was “no damage” to American aircraft. No damage. Meanwhile his own Pentagon’s inspector general was documenting nearly 60 aircraft damaged or destroyed, up to $3.7 billion in equipment wiped out, and hundreds of buildings and structures hit at American bases across eight countries. He said it anyway. Either he doesn’t know what his own government found, or he knows and doesn’t care that you know. I honestly can’t tell which is worse.
This wasn’t a few scorch marks. Iran hammered the Fifth Fleet’s home in Bahrain so badly that the acting Navy secretary admitted they “blew the hell out of” it, and the Navy’s top admiral says they won’t be using it anytime soon. At Al Udeid in Qatar, the command center running the air war was reportedly knocked out. American troops were pulled out of bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar because those bases had turned into targets. A senior service member told ABC News some of them would take decades to rebuild. Our bases were wrecked, our people had to evacuate, and what we got from Washington was a victory lap.
And who finally told us the truth? Not a general. Not a cabinet secretary. Not the man with the podium. It was enlisted men and women risking their careers to get photos of the wreckage out to the public, because the people above them wouldn’t. One of them told CBS News, “This is major damage to our bases that hasn’t been communicated to the American public.” Read that again. Our troops are leaking the truth because they’ve given up on their own leadership telling it.
There’s a price tag for all of this, and it’s locked in a vault. Senators have seen the damage estimate in a classified briefing. You haven’t, and you’re paying for it. The Pentagon says it can’t release the number because it hasn’t decided what to rebuild yet. So every war cost estimate it hands Congress quietly leaves the destroyed bases out. Senator Chris Murphy says he was blocked from even setting foot on Al Udeid. Innocent people don’t bar the door.
Now look at the human wreckage, because this is where it stops being about buildings.
On March 1, an Iranian drone tore into an Army operations center at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait. Six American soldiers were killed and dozens more wounded. Those survivors did everything their country asked of them, and nine of them told the AP the military medical system failed them. Their brain injuries and blast injuries were missed. They waited months for care. One chief warrant officer says they weren’t even listed as combat wounded when they landed in Germany, so men with blast injuries were sent to outpatient care instead of a hospital bed. The Pentagon looked at all that and called their treatment “appropriate.” Appropriate. Say that word to a soldier with a brain injury who spent months begging for an appointment.
The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group was out for 322 days, and eight of its sailors tried to take their own lives. That number didn’t come from activists. It’s in a letter signed by the acting Navy secretary. Eight young Americans hit their breaking point at sea, and when the ships finally came home, California and a veterans nonprofit had to step up with the mental health help our own government should have had ready.
So here’s what we’ve got. The bases are rubble, the aircraft are gone, the bill is classified, the wounded are fighting the system that sent them to war, and sailors are breaking under the weight while the people in charge stand at podiums telling you everything is fine. They wave the flag at every press conference and then walk away from the people who actually serve under it.
That isn’t leadership. It’s betrayal in a nice suit. And every single person in uniform who bled, broke or came home damaged deserves a government with the courage to tell the truth about what it put them through.
