The government shutdown is so infuriating. The last time we had a shutdown was under Trump. There was never a shutdown with Biden. Democrats generally don't want to do this kind of thing because Democrats don't want to hurt American citizens. But Republicans don't care because it's all about getting their way. I saw Mike Johnson talking about the shutdown on Meet the Press, and he 100% blamed the Democrats. He said that if the government shuts down, it's entirely the Democrats' fault for not caving to the demands of the current administration. In the meantime, the Democrats are offering to compromise, which is what a democracy is supposed to be about. But the current administration doesn't believe in democracy. They just throw temper tantrums until they get their way.
That's what this shutdown is: a giant temper tantrum from one side who refuses to compromise with the other. And some of you VOTED for this!
On a side note: I saw a comment in a political discussion group on Reddit from someone who claimed to be absolutely horrified and disgusted by Trump's behavior on Jan 6, but voted for Trump again in 2024 because he felt that "Kamala would have been worse." How in hell could that be possible?? I really want to know on what planet Kamala Harris would possibly be worse. I KNOW she would never shut down the government as part of a temper tantrum, because Joe Biden never did anything like that to the American people. The things Kamala talked about were all things that would have IMPROVED our lives. So why are there people who believe she would be worse than what we're experiencing now? What we're experiencing now is authoritarianism, which is totally un-American! Kamala NEVER once talked about anything authoritarian. She talked about compromising with the other side and giving them a seat at the table! (Her own words!) That's Democracy! And yet there are people who believe she would have done something worse than what's currently being done? Someone please explain! (I know the right-wingers on my friend list will NEVER explain because they never do. But I continue to try to understand. If they want us to understand them, they can explain themselves. But clearly they don't want us to understand since they never, ever speak up.)

A brief history of ‘covfefe’

On Thursday, Donald Trump returned to his much-touted – and to date, deeply underwhelming – social media venture: Truth Social.

“I’M BACK! #COVFEFE,” Trump tweeted truthed, with a picture of himself at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Which is, well, weird. Mostly because of his use of the made-up word “covfefe.”

Let’s go through the history of “covfefe,” shall we?

It all began in back in May 2017 when, a little after midnight, then-President Trump tweeted this: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.”

That tweet was quickly deleted.

But Trump came back the next morning with this: “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ??? Enjoy!”

The “true meaning” seems pretty simple. Trump meant to type “coverage” – as in “constant negative press COVERAGE” – but instead wrote “covfefe” and hit send on his tweet before spell-checking it.

Amazingly, that wasn’t the end of the story. The White House press secretary at the time, Sean Spicer, was subsequently asked what Trump meant by “covfefe.” And rather than simply saying that Trump had made a typo, Spicer said this: “The President and a small group of people know exactly what he meant.”

Which is, of course, ridiculous. He didn’t “mean” anything. He mistyped the word “coverage.” End of story.

But the reaction from Trump and the White House was telling.

Neither Trump nor Spicer wanted to say that Trump had simply made a mistake. Trump and his minions are heavily invested in the idea that he doesn’t, um, make mistakes. And so they created a whole story around “covfefe” which made no sense because it is a made-up word.

Over the intervening years, like so many aspects of Trumpism, “covfefe” has transformed into a sort of inside joke. It’s the equivalent of the “Let’s Go Brandon” chant. Or a secret handshake. If you know, you know – and all that.

“Covfefe,” for the Trump base, means a media freakout. It means the press just not getting Trump. It signifies his ability to play the press like a fiddle.

This is, of course, colossally odd. “Covfefe” was – and is – a typo. Nothing more. And yet, in the bizarro world of politics in which we now live, it’s become a political rallying cry.

We truly live in dumb political times.

The goal of every Republican today is to never wake up.  They intentionally  decided to live in their own world when they elected “Supply-Side/Trickle-Down, Me-First/America-First Reagan”.   They have stayed there for forty+ years. 

This is not the world of Lincoln and Eisenhower.  Republicans now live in the world of “Confederate and Nazi MAGA flags in the Capital.”  And after forty+ years, they achieved it.

There is a reason this Party chose their Confederate and Nazi MAGA flags  to represent them.  They represent where they are in comparison to “Back Lives Matter Lincoln”, and “Progressively Tax Wealth and Greed Eisenhower”.   (On Insurrection day, they publicly negated the legacies of the both he first and last authentic Republican presidents simultaneously, for the whole world to witness.)

By remaining Republican to elect Ronald Reagan and his proclamation, and to grant Donald Trump two exonerations (before and after the planned armed-insurrection), every Republican has now formally declared themselves in collusion with the Jan 6 insurrection.

There has been no precedent in American history. No other Party, administration, or president has done such a thing.   Today’s RINO Party put an end to America’s peaceful transfer of power, with a planned, armed, domestic incursion in our Capital on Jan 6 2021 and has made it another day that will live in infamy.  

(FYI:  the authentic Republicans did the honorable thing when Reagan’s nomination for president was announced.). “Too late woke” Liz Cheney, and Adam Kinzinger are correct: Today’s Republicans are “without honor.”  

The last opportunity for claiming any modicum of honor, occurred when Republicans participated in declaring their president’s first exoneration, that formally pre-approved his planning and implementation of America’s first armed domestic insurrection.  

(The second exoneration formally confirmed every Republican’s approval; and publicly rewarded Trump for his activities on behalf of every remaining Republican in America.)

Hence, the goal of every Republican is, “to never wake up.”
