and JJ Jim Johnson Posted of Facebook:

I have covid madness. Too much time sitting around thinking. Pondering things that bother me and I can’t seem to reconcile. Today, I am obsessed with racism. If you actually read this lengthy post, please comment.

I have friends of every race, culture and background. Guess what. I like them all. And I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t also like them. I’ve had students of all sorts of backgrounds and guess what, I really like them too. We’re not the same. Some of their music I don’t really like that much. Some of it I love. But I can say the same of opera, musicals, rock, hip hop, metal, soul, country, pop, gagaku, and many others. There’s sitar music that is absolutely fab.

When I see a black person, I don’t see ugly. When I see a chinese person, I don’t see ugly. Korean, Mexican, Italian, Indian, African and on and on. I don’t see ugly. I don’t have a fear of black, brown, yellow, green blue or white. That stuff doesn’t normally occur to me. In fact, quite the opposite. I see beauty in every race and religion, culture and origin. And I like it.

But today, I ask, what is racism.  What is the difference in a causal conversational reference to race or culture and outright, overt racism? Where does the line cross? Where does being politically correct fail and racism begin?

I totally get the American version of racism, slavery and cannot even understand that thought process, not even a little. I will never understand the point of it, except my recent ramblings on fear based lives…

I know why there were slaves. I know that the systemic racism that exists today is a plague, as bad, maybe worse than covid because it happens every day of ever year for decades, for centuries.  It’s nauseating to me, because I now my non white friends have to deal with this every day. Every damn day. I have never tolerated it. And I will fight. I am adamant if I see that shit going on, someone will be on the ground, begging me not to end them. I suppose I am more violent about this than I should be but I picture it as me, or my daughter or son, mother, father, spouse… If someone did that, they would have to stop and suffer. Yeah, I might get arrested but at least I didn’t tolerate it. I can say without hesitation, if I have been there with George Floyd, I would have stopped that fucking bastard Chauvin with force if necessary. I’ve always been that way.

But today I have a dilemma.

I don’t use the N word. I find it used by the soulless and intended to hurt. But when I hear the word sagging, spelled backwards being said by someone, it bothers me immensely. I wish they wouldn’t but it still is a contemporary cultural slang that has taken hold. But now, what if I hear a white person say it, or an Asian or Mexican or Indian or or or…

How am I supposed to react?

If I say it, am I encouraging racism?

Am I being racist?

Why is it ok for my black bud to say it?

Why is it ok for my back buds to say to me, JJ my nnnnn? BTW, I do not take offense because I look at it the way it was intended, as a term of endearment, and fact is, I appreciate them being comfortable enough around me to say it. I actually love them for it and appreciate that they would. I know, weird but true. And I know I could say it back, but I am hesitant. Because of culture, racism, perception.

So there’s my dilemma. Where does it become racist? Defined, as the systematic and systemic oppression, segregation, categorization and so on. But let me ask this. What about when an Asian says something like that to a Mexican or Indian? Or the opposite? Is that also racist? And what if an Asian says that to a white, or a black says that to a white? I understand that the black experience in American with this shit is so profound and is still so incredibly bad today that there is a predetermined urge to think of racism as white against black. But does it also exist with any other minority? How about male/female or even older/younger?

And finally, this comes to me today because of an experience. Take this example and let me know.

A white person, an absolutely non racist BLM supporting white person gets cautioned about saying “n***a” in the workplace. Not in the context of black person but in referencing a song on the playlist that goes “Bag a Six Figga  N***a”.   A customer hears it and complains. In conversation with other employees about the complaint, mentions the phrase “Bag a Six Figga  N***a” and mentions that they need to fix the playlist because a customer complained.

In another similar case, someone has an artifact of something bad that happened and emblazons BLM on it. Later, someone complains. Who is right? Where does the line exist. BTW, the person complaining in both cases was black.

How do I reconcile this, right wrong what? It’s confusing.

Like I mentioned, I would like your comments on this. I’m serious. It’s bothering me a lot.

and I responded... Yep... I was Raised to Not Be Racist... So I Bought a Condo in a Black Neighborhood because the PRICE WAS 25% Cheaper than the Exact Same Condo in a White Neighborhood and I Preferred to TAKE THE DEEP DISCOUNT. Oxon Hill Maryland... about 3 Miles from South East Washington DC - The Murder Capitol of the USA. Now that Honor Goes to East Palo Alto or the South Side of Chicago... ALL BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS... Facts - Reality - Racism is Accurate.

At long last, a top Republican is distancing himself from Donald Trump... Literally...

Mitch McConnell has been boasting to colleagues and to reporters in Kentucky that he knew better than to go to the Amy Coney Barrett super-spreader event in the Rose Garden or set foot on that 18 acres of magical thinking known as the White House because he could see that the president and his team were courting danger. At 78, the wily Senate majority leader, a polio survivor, wasn’t taking any chances. “I actually haven’t been to the White House since Aug. 6," he said at a news conference back home, “because my impression was their approach to how to handle this was different than mine and what I insisted that we do in the Senate, which is to wear a mask and practice social distancing.” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/10/opinion/trump-mitch-mcconnell-coronavirus.html

Letters to the Editor: Chico News and Review:

Keeping Trump in check: Re “What concerns you most this election season?” (Streetalk, Feb. 13):

There are other important elections that have barely been mentioned, by the media and the politicians themselves.

This year, as usual, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be chosen. Let’s start by replacing incumbent Doug LaMalfa with Audrey Denney. Hopefully a couple other bad apples (Devin Nunes) will also be replaced, and the House will maintain its Democratic majority.

The Senate will have 35 elections this year. There are 22 Republican and 13 Democratic seats being contested. After watching the impeachment debacle, it will be imperative for the Democrats to also take control of the Senate. There is a lot of potential to flip the Senate, the way the House was in 2018. Among the Republicans running are a few notables that probably wouldn’t be missed: Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Joni Ernst (Iowa), and Susan Collins (Maine).

Having a Democratic majority in both chambers of Congress would keep Trump in check with issues like military actions, health care, tariffs, the wall, environmental decisions and Supreme Court appointments.

Not so miniscule... Re “Hysteria on both sides” (Letters, by Lucy Cooke, Feb. 13):

The writer is mistaken when she describes Russia’s social media activity in 2016 as “miniscule.”

According to The Washington Post, Russian agents infiltrated Google, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and even Pokémon Go. Russia-linked Facebook pages, with names such as “Secure Borders” and “Being Patriotic,” garnered hundreds of thousands of followers and generated tens of millions of interactions.

Remember, Hillary won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. It was only by dint of the Electoral College that Trump won the election, which hinged on fewer than 80,000 votes in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan (less than one-tenth of 1 percent of the total ballots cast). As detailed in the Mueller Report, Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort shared polling data with the Russians so they knew where to concentrate their activity.

Trump apologists argue, “There’s no proof that anyone’s vote was influenced by Russian interference,” and that may be true. But there’s also no proof that a Super Bowl ad will influence anyone’s decision on which brand of beer or tortilla chips to buy, yet advertisers spend a fortune on the assumption that millions of viewers will be so influenced.

Differing on endorsements:

With all respect for the CN&R, your endorsement of Elizabeth Warren is disastrously wrong. We are watching the corporate takeover of our country, exactly as those who signed our Declaration of Independence and Constitution warned.

Under Warren, nothing will change. The only person talking about real things and offering solutions is Sen. Sanders. He has been an effective legislator and he has been right about many issues for many years. His policies are popular throughout our nation. He polled higher against Trump than Clinton did in 2016, he has by far the most individual contributors, he attracts by far the biggest crowds, and he is now leading the pack (“clown car” would be an appropriate term), so that the electability canard does not apply.

Here is the deal: Economic power is political power, there is no way to separate them. When we see the entire wealth of our nation controlled by a handful of men, we are watching the destruction of government by and for the people. This is the last chance we have to leave that track and choose something better. Any candidate not advocating significant change is simply another corporate tool. Sen. Sanders is the only rational choice for president.

CN&R’s endorsement of Elizabeth Warren makes complete sense if you are looking for an impeccable résumé and a sincere, intelligent fighter against Wall Street and big business. Unfortunately, beating Trump will require much more than a strong résumé, and, for whatever reasons, Warren is starting to plummet in the polls—the pundits say she is not far enough left for liberals but still too far left for the moderates.

So the fight will be for the middle—mostly independents. If it is Bernie, then Trump will ride the socialist label he puts on Bernie all the way to another four years in office. One more Sanders heart attack would also ruin his chances.

I love Warren’s energy and ethics, as well as Mayor Pete’s intelligence. Imagine a president who could travel on our behalf speaking five languages?

But I just mailed in my ballot and marked Bloomberg down as my choice. I believe he is an experienced fighter from a city that knows how to breed fighters—New York—and has the best chance to beat Trump. And beating Trump is the only thing that matters.
