From blockages to weekly protests, environmental campaigners in Germany are angry at the continued extraction of coal. Euronews' Hans von der Brelie heads to one of the world’s largest opencast pits, Garzweiler II, to witness for himself the battle to close the country's lignite mines.

I arrive at sunrise, overwhelmed by the beauty of the industrial landscape, which stretches as far as the eye can see. An abstract pattern of earth and lignite layers bathed in the early morning light.

But it’s a deadly beauty: if all those hundreds of millions of tonnes of coal actually do get excavated and burnt, Germany can say goodbye to its climate targets. In recent years the country has started waking up to what climate catastrophe might actually look like: blisteringly hot summers and apocalyptic rainfall that has the ability to sweep both towns and lives away.

Ahead of the international climate change conference COP26 in Glasgow, German climate activists have been pressuring Berlin to exit coal earlier than scheduled.

At the Garzweiler opencast lignite pit, they took things a step further, blocking the movement of giant bucketwheel excavators.

Also at a nearby forest, they built tree houses to try to stop the expansion of the pit.

Activists, dressed in colored overalls and braving wind and rain, were also protesting the planned destruction of several villages to make way for the expansion of the Garzweiler strip mine, west of Cologne.

Brown said the new law would head off "a growing threat to society, particularly to young thrill-seekers unaware of the damage it (LSD) can do.” The bill, by Sen, Donald L. Grunsky, R-Watsonville, outlaws the promiscuous use of the drug which backers of the legislation say is reaching epidemic proportions on college campuses. But it permits LSD to be used in research projects conducted by recognized hospitals and clinics.

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 30, 1966 -- Nevada and California today became the first states to enact controls over the hallucinogenic drug LSD.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CPI)- , California and Nevada Monday became the first states in the nation to outlaw the promsiscuous use of the dream drug LSD. Nevada Gov. Grant Sawyer and California Gov. Edmund G. Brown signed similar LSD control bills into law. The statutes were generally the same. Each outlaws the manufacture, sale and possession of the drug but permits its use in supervised research projects. | The California statute makes I possession or knowing use of hallucination- causing drug a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $l,OOO or a year in jail. It makes manufacture, posses-; sion for the purpose of sale, or; isale of the drug a felony punishable by one to five years in prison for the first offense and two to 10 years for each subi sequent offense. I The Nevada law restricts, the (possession of LSD to li-' censed manufacturers, pharmacists, doctors and psychologists. The drug may be used in re-j search at state universities “to investigate the safety and effectiveness of such drugs.” How-! ever the person to whom the drug is administered must be j under the personal supervision of a physician until the effects! wear off. Unlawful possession or use of the drug is a gross misdemean- 1 or which has a maximum penalty of one year in the county jail and a 31,000 fine. The second offense is a felony with a one-to-10-year prison sentence. Backers of both bills claimed [the illicit use of LSD and similar drugs was reaching epidemic proportions on college campuses. In Millbrook. N.Y., Dr. Timothy Leary, a controversial supporter of LSD, said control! laws were “hysterical” and “unrealistic.” He suggested that Brown (and presumably Sawyer) should take the drug and “discover first; hand why the young people of his state are willing to risk prison to expand their consciousness.” Despite a controversy over who signed first—Brown or Saw- ' ver —the Nevada statute was 1 first to go into effect. It be- came law with Sawyer’s signature.

The Florida High school Murderer was wearing full body armor and a helmet... Teachers with pistols would have had no chance to out gun an teenager with an Assault Rifle. AND... Reality shows that the more guns we have the more likely hood of gun accidents... Suicides... and what if an Armed Teacher "Goes Postal" and shoots up students and other teachers? Who will pay for all these new guns? We already can't afford to buy basic school supplies like chalk and books... Who will pay for Gun Training? The real solution is LESS GUNS... OUTLAW Assault Rifles and Raise gun ownership age to 21 and increase background checks.
Remember, President Trump signed a Law that makes it easier for mentally ill people to buy guns. People that are getting a Social Security Disability Check for Mental Illness would be allowed to pass background checks. That's what Trump's ACTIONS have been... The exact opposite of his words...

Why should we all vote against all Republicrimes Everywhere, Everytime? Because Republicrimes are the paid puppets of the NRA. The Gun manufacturers business plan depend on people that already own guns to buy more guns. Everyone who wanted a gun has already bought one and so the industry depends on people that want to increase their arsenal from 5 guns to 50 guns. The Gun Lobby publishes hysteria producing propaganda about dangerous evil strangers that plan to attack your family. The Brainwashing causes gun owners to spend money buying more and more and more guns to defend themselves from an imaginary enemy... In FACT, having a gun in the house increases the chance of having a gun accident... Families are LESS SAFE with firearms in the house because they are often used upon the family.

It’s scary that the tragedy of the gun violence epidemic is being re-framed exclusively as a mental health issue. The reality is that they are two very separate issues. Millions of people with mental health issues would never hurt or harm anyone ever. Millions of gun owners would never go on a rampage to kill innocent people.
Clearly, politicians desperate to dodge a “do nothing” label from their constituents are deflecting the issue to it being a mental health issue. In so doing, any progress made to destigmatize mental health issues will evaporate. People with mental health issues may lose their rights or have them severely infringed upon. Actions which will only exacerbate mental health issues for people who are already suffering.
Who will defend people with mental health issues from becoming the scapegoat of gun violence? Which agencies will advocate for the mentally ill? And which mental health experts will misguided politicians engage prior to crafting policy?

Yeah, I really don’t understand this stance. It is both a mental illness problem and a gun control problem. This isn’t a one issue agenda. The world doesn’t work like that. You don’t solve problems by piecemeal legislation. Everything is interconnected. We need healthcare, we need a living wage, we need childcare, a better educational system, we need more mental health care, affordable housing, ALL OF IT. Studies show that mass shooters have mental health problems.

There’s a huge difference between mental illness and criminally insane. Obviously. As politicians rush to boost their poll numbers or the likelihood of their own re-election, will they recognize that critical distinction or blindly rush forward with harsh but ineffective policies to protect guns and the NRA?

They'll Blame Video Games and Lack of Jesus in the Schools and in the End... People will forget about Mass Murder in TEXAS and People Will Be Outraged by the Mass Murder in Tulsa, Oklahoma... and then the NEXT Mass Murder... and Then The Government of Texas Will DO NOTHING...
