The Sun Appears to be about the Size of a Quarter Held at Arm's Length. -AND- The Moon Appears to be the Exact Same Size. -AND- The Shadow the Earth Casts on the Moon is The Exact Same Size...

The Three Most Important Objects In the Universe appear to be the Exact Same Size... And that is why we have Eclipses... If the Sizes were not exact, the Solar Eclipse and the Lunar Eclipse would never happen... 

I started thinking about this while watching the Movie TRON Legacy... and the Digital Woman from inside the computer asked the Man from Earth... "What Does the Sun Look Like?" ...and He Replied... "I'm Not Exactly Sure... Because You Can't Just LOOK AT IT... That Would cause Blindness..."

OK... That's not an Exact Transcription of the Movie... but To Me... That was the Meaning...

and at the end of the Movie he Takes her to Earth and shows her a Sunrise While Riding a Motorcycle...

The Math: 

The Sun's diameter is about 865,370 miles. The Distance from Earth to the Sun is 93,000,000 miles.

(but it changes - Earth's orbit is NOT a Circle)

The Moon's diameter of 2,159.1 miles. The Distance from Earth to The Moon is an average of 238,900 miles. (but it also changes - The Moon's orbit is NOT a Circle) 

865,370/2,159.1=400.8 
93,000,000/238,900=389.2 

400 is pretty damn close to 389...
Remember: an Object that is 400 Time Larger but
is 389 times farther away would appear to be
about the same size... and this is not just theoretical - I have seen BOTH a Solar and a Lunar Eclipse myself...

I first noticed the Grateful Dead in 1968 in English class at junior high school. Our teacher had put up posters on the wall of the classroom and we wrote essays about them. He was attempting to stimulate creative WRITING but more importantly, creative THINKING.

One was an American flag made out of swastikas and another was a solarized/negative photo of 5 hairy men standing in front of "LITTLE BOXES" type suburban tract homes.

Our English teacher stopped working for the school system that year and has never been heard of since. That has happened often to people that go to see the Dead... They change their lifestyle and start associating with a different set of people...

 The Leslie speaker is a combined amplifier and loudspeaker that projects the signal from an electric or electronic instrument and modifies the sound by rotating a baffle chamber ("drum") in front of the loudspeakers. A similar effect is provided by a rotating system of horns in front of the treble driver. It is most commonly associated with the Hammond organ, though it was later used for the electric guitar and other instruments. A typical Leslie speaker contains an amplifier, a treble horn and a bass speaker—though specific components depend upon the model. A musician controls the Leslie speaker by either an external switch or pedal that alternates between a slow and fast speed setting, known as "chorale" and "tremolo".

The speaker is named after its inventor, Donald Leslie, who began working in the late 1930s to get a speaker for a Hammond organ that better emulated a pipe or theatre organ, and discovered that baffles rotating along the axis of the speaker cone gave the best sound effect. and then on Facebook SE Said: I honestly have a hard time understanding the constant chanting of "We need more housing!" here in the Bay Area. I mean, on the one hand, I get it. Everybody in the world wants to live here, people are moving here from all over the world to get in on the high-paying tech industry, and apparently there isn't enough housing for everyone who wants to live here. That part I get. But the part that proponents of "more housing" never want to acknowledge is the fact that we are SO overcrowded already. Life has become so much more stressful here as we've become so inundated with people. Our roads are gridlocked, especially our freeways. Many of us feel like we can only work within a certain distance from where we live because if we branch out any farther, we'll end up with a commute where we spend several hours in stand-still traffic every day. There are high-density apartment buildings going up EVERYWHERE, yet the rents NEVER go down. EVER. With each new high-density building that opens up, the rents only continue to get higher and higher. Two years ago, apartments were renting for $3000 a month. Now, they're $4000 a month, and that's with thousands upon thousands of NEW apartments all over town. The rents never go down no matter how much housing we build, because the people who move here have money, and they can afford to shell out thousands and thousands each month on rent.  I never see any evidence that all of this endless high-density housing is ever going to cause rents to do anything except continue to go up. 

But my main issue is the reduced quality of life that results from having too many people packed into an area which wasn't meant to hold so many people. I haven't even touched on the water issue, the fact that we are in a constant state of drought, and there already isn't enough water for the people who were already here...and yet, they want to build all of this housing to bring hundreds of thousands - maybe millions - MORE people here?? In all my life, they're never built any new reservoirs in the San Jose area, and yet the population has quadrupled in my lifetime. Maybe it's more than quadrupled, I don't actually know. But we have constant drought now, and yet we're somehow supposed to make those same old reservoirs work for MILLIONS of new residents in addition to the millions who are already here?!? Where are we going to get the water for millions of new residents when we're already running out of water for the millions who are already here? Why does no one ever talk about the water issue? It's just a constant drumbeat of "We need more housing!" without any consideration for the reality of what that means. 

There are too many people living here already. They should stop building more housing to bring even more people to an already overpopulated area. It makes no sense, and it clearly is NOT bringing down the high rents. If we STOP building the high-density housing, the millions of people who want to move here will have no where to live, so they WON'T MOVE HERE. Why do we want to make it easier for them to come here and crowd the area even more, and drive up the cost of living even more? STOP BUILDING THE HOUSING. Let those people stay where they are, or let them move someplace that has enough room for millions of new residents. They DON'T have to come HERE. We don't have to accommodate millions of people just because they WANT to be here. I want a lot of things that I don't get to have. It's part of life. There simply isn't room here for everyone who wants to be here. The entire world can't fit into the Bay Area. It isn't logical or practical, and it will ultimately destroy the area. Just because millions of people WANT to live here, that doesn't mean we have to find a way to fit them all in. If there is no room, there is no room. People can work from anywhere now. The pandemic proved that. People in tech don't HAVE to physically be located in Silicon Valley. Stop building the housing! Let them live somewhere else!

VK Replied: I agree. I always see people say the answer is more housing but maybe the answer is less people. From my understanding though, I think a lot of people have moved away with the new ability for so many to work from home. Lots of people moved away from places like LA as well to places like Texas where cost of living is cheaper. I actually looked up an apartment complex across the street from DD's on Saratoga and it was going from $1800-2200 which actually didn't seem to bad for that area compared to before. So I think the rents may have dipped due to people moving away after covid. But now Sacramento is the next best thing because people are taking their gobs of money from the bay area and buying in full here, making it impossible for those of us who have lived here for years to buy a home for the first time. We're constantly outbid on houses here by some transplant from the bay area with their nest egg and its so frustrating. We spent years building up our jobs and incomes for that ability and I was just saying that I think anyone who moves here should be required to rent for a year and establish residency before buying a house here. Sort of like when you move out of state to go to a university. You have to wait a year to get in-state tuition rates.

SE Replied: Yeah, there have been a lot of news stories about the "mass exodus" out of California, but it's not true. I mean, I think there are people who are leaving, but they're being outnumbered by the people who are arriving here in droves. If people were truly leaving to a noticeable degree, there would be less traffic, rents would plummet, housing costs would plummet, and life would change dramatically. But in reality, none of those things have happened. Traffic continues to get worse, housing and apartment costs continue to go up, never down, and every place you go is just as crowded as it ever was. Believe me, I really wish the "mass exodus" was real. It would be so wonderful if the population of this state would go down to what it was in the 90's or before. I would give anything to be able to hop on one of the freeways during rush hour and have traffic actually flow as it's supposed to. In the 90's, that was possible, but not anymore. And if there were truly a "mass exodus" out of the state, we should see evidence of that in traffic and rents. But prices never go down. I wish they'd stop building so much housing! Maybe then people would stop moving here!

VE Replied: I hear you. I am sorry it’s gotten the way it is - it really sucks to be trying to buy right now. I think your idea of having to establish residency isn’t a bad one, but it would not go over well with people who are poised to purchase, and renting can be realllllly hard. A number of years ago we had to rent between homes (house wasn’t ready to move into and we had sold the other one) and it was damn near impossible to find something fast, particularly with pets.

We lived here (Folsom) in the 90’s (I went to Sac State and took root there, so I was “from” Sacramento I guess, although not a native Californian) we moved up to Olympia WA in 2000 (by choice). We have investment properties here, so when we were thinking about possibly moving back, we started using one to live in part-time. Did this for a few years, but going back and forth was a pain... so we decided to just move back permanently. Continued to use our little place while looking (it’s too small for full-time), found our current house in Fall of 19 - JUST before the sh!t hit the fan. We had thought we might move again, maybe, but with what’s happening with the market - no way! We now feel LUCKY that we found this house. Have put a lot into it, so will stay and call it home.

I heard a segment on NPR a couple weeks ago about “zoom towns,” they were specifically talking about Truckee. The Bay Area exit has affected many markets! We actually have some tenants at a place in Folsom who had sold their home locally, planning to move to Truckee. But they’re discouraged by the crazy market there now, and are waiting it out (it’s why they’re renting from us.)

SE Replied: I sure wish this so-called Bay Area exodus would make a dent in the overpopulation issue around here. I believe that it's happening, and I even know a few people who have moved out of state in recent years, but it never makes a dent in the overcrowding or the high cost of living. We need a lot MORE people to leave the Bay Area before it will be enough to make a difference in the quality of life here. I kinda wish the news stories would explain that. They make it sound like we've got tumbleweeds blowing through empty streets and a bunch of empty buildings because nobody wants to live here anymore. But that can't be further from the truth. People are still paying millions OVER the asking price for an old, run-down house, and they think nothing of shelling out $3000 or $4000 a month on rent. If tons of people are leaving, rents and housing costs should be going down. But not enough people are leaving to make any difference.

I Said: I escaped from San Jose in the Late 1990s. Moved to Chico... a Small Town with a College in the Center. Then Moved to Eureka in 2001. A Small Town with a College in the Center... I Went to Humboldt State University and graduated with a Degree in Computer Science and IMMEDIATLY Got a Great Job with the County Government. SO... I'm a Strong Believer in SMALL TOWNS being Vastly Better than the Big City... Going to Visit my Brother in San Francisco is VERY STRESSFUL... Too Many People... Too Many Cars... Too Freaking MUCH!... The Ewok Villages and the Forest Moon of Endor. The flying motorcycle scenes were filmed by having the Stedicam Inventor, Garrett Brown walk thru the woods following the path they travel... and then Industrial Light and Magic bluescreened in the Actors and Flying Motorcycles...

On Highway 101 traveling North from Eureka, just past Trinidad, there is a rest stop with a paved footpath that looks just like the movie... A little imagination and you can hear the little teddy bear people singing and playing the drums...
