Eventually the courts said they could not be for whites only. In response, many of these communities drained their pools and filled them in permanently. If they get to have it, the nobody will have it. And if you've ever wondered why Americans have shit healthcare, retirement, child care, education and all the rest of it, now you know.
And women in the 70s could suddenly get their own credit cards, make their own decisions, even control their own fertility with the pill. Right after this American evangelicals suddenly developed strong feelings about abortion that they'd never had before. Welcome to the pro-life movement, born out of a desire to reign in women's rights.
I think even the NRA is a reaction to all the changes from back then. Seemingly overnight a 200 year old gun safety and marksmanship outfit became a radical gun rights lobby. Gotta have a lot of guns around in case the government betrays us even further.
Along comes Donald Trump. His open racism and misogyny signaled to many white people that he was the guy who was going to put a stop to all this nonsense. In fact, MAGA is nothing more than a desire to return to a time when straight white men controlled everything, women and people of color knew their places, and the LGBTQ folks were invisible.
And to your question...some of us want this so badly that they are willing to overlook the man's many and obvious flaws as a human being and a president. They want it so badly that they will believe utter nonsense like the 2020 stolen election, for example. Their desire to return to the social hierarchy they hold so dear is a powerful motivation leading them to believe just about anything that will get it for them. Including that Trump is an angel sent from God or something.
