Rise of the Nazis and Ronald Reagan “Oh My”

Last night my wife, the nurse had to work. Since I worked around the house all day, I was tired. We had decided after decades of large family turkey diners that this year, with all of the kids on their own, we would forgo it. So that evening I sat down to watch “Authoritarian Fest.” I had recorded the second parts of Reagan and Rise of the Nazis, the first six months. So, I sat down with diner and started to watch them. What struck me as I sat there watching, was how similar the two movements were in their tactics and to a point, and so far, end goals. That they were both cases of “Justified Assholism.” The Nazis used The Treaty of Versailles as their justification and the Republicans, White Supremacists, the Civil Rights Act. But what the Reagan Republicans played on was the deep set feeling that “White people didn’t want their lives to change.” And Reagan represented all of the things that they saw as America. After all, he had played one on television, in the movies. All of the decades of moral soap operas, as westerns and the myth of what America was, Ronald Reagan played the part, like a pro.

In both cases it was the “Hard Right” that set the stage. In Germany it was the Authoritarian Hindenburg and the neo-royalists and in America it was Barry Goldwater and very rich, very conservative Americas, the John Birch Society. In both cases, racism played a central role and in both cases, a since of loss, gave it impetus. In Germany it was the loss of World War One, the chaos and uncertainty that followed. In America it was the loss of superiority and fearing how it could affect their lives. Their perfect lives, in a white only neighborhood, going to white only schools and having an insulated life away from the problems some of them helped create. That was the life they didn’t want changed. In Germany, later it became the extermination of the Jews, who had treated in Hitler’s eye, him badly in his youth and made a perfect scapegoat.

Some might say that I am being unfair to Ronald Reagan, but no, it is exactly the same animal. Not to the extremes of the Nazis, not yet anyway but the same tactics and goal, subverting democracy to gain a direct path to power, without oversight. We have been lucky, so far in that we have a tradition of democracy, for all of its warts. Something Hitler didn’t have to worry about. But both had authoritarian conservatives deeply entrenched into government and minions and cronies in positions of power, ready to thwart justice. But the trail and the tactics are the same, the ideologies are similar as with Hitler and Trump. Fight the enemy and being justified to do anything, with a safety net of cronies. Be ruthless, be cruel and rotten but be socially acceptable at the same time. Ronald Reagan used code words or “Dog whistles” to tell the racists he was on their side. He said it all with a polish that years as an actor had built. Ronald Reagan is the direct ancestor of Donald Trump, who hoped to be the next Adolf Hitler. Whether he would have gone to that extreme it is difficult to say. But the lineage is right there to be seen. Subverting the institutions that promote fair government, the regulations that do the same. Attacking anything that helps people as socialist and inherently bad. After all, the New Deal had caused the Civil Rights Act. Sadly, it was all too successful. The Cons destroyed the system of regulation, subverted the judicial system and have done much of what the Nazis did. All to subvert Democracy into a lap puppy, able to be drowned in a bathtub. Sounds familiar.

They kicked me off for no reason and won't let me use their service unless I give them my CELLPHONE NUMBER... I don't own a Cellphone so I'm OFF Twitter permanently... and that's Great because it has been infested with Russian Bots and Mad King Donald. I certainly do not need to read any of their Propaganda... and Lies... and my life is better for not reading that garbage.

I remember that We were sent home from elementary school as a safety drill to practice what to do in the event of an Atomic War... When I got home, Mom recommended that we climb the hill at the end of Bruce Ave so we could have a good view of the blasts... a cynical opinion... we didn't have a bomb shelter. It was assumed that we would die and our last moments on Earth should be interesting.

We also went outside at Night to see The Sputnik, a communications satellite sent up by the Russians. We could see it, which was kind of surprising since San Jose had a lot of air pollution and lights...

At my folks house we had a Parakeet named "Pretty Bird", Tadpoles and Tropical Fish. We had a bird and it said the words "Brush Your Teeth". Mom told me that after every meal. The bird heard those words so many times that it became one of it's phrases. It also said "Pretty Bird". Dad raised Tropical Fish. I remember that we had Neon Tetras. He only did it for a couple of years because it was a lot of work to clean the tank and replace the dead fish. He had no talent for raising fish. I remember that it was more fun to go to the pet store than to own our own. The tadpoles I got out of the creek at the end of our street. I brought them home in a jar and kept them in a bucket out back. I saw them grow one leg, two legs, three legs and then the vanished. They just jumped out of the bucket and lived in the backyard. They were still living there today as far as I know.

Vote out the Sarumans and Saurons, and vote in fellow Hobbits.
