This gig was discovered by Andrew Doe after the publication of my book. The Foothill Sentinel reported, "More than 2,000 squealing teenage girls had campus police and sheriff's deputies hopping last Friday night as the Young Republicans sponsored a concert by the Beach Boys, a name surf-style music group."

A show scheduled for Chico State College on October 24 was canceled. The show was sponsored by Campus Republicans but the sponsors failed to obtain permission to use the auditorium. The BBs may also have played shows at Contra Costa College and at UC Berkeley as part of this “four-date tour” but as of yet I have found no confirmation.

So for those clever folks who wanted to steal gas they made them selves little trays the shape of nickels filled them with water and froze them. They then used the frozen nickel shaped fake coins to get the meters to work. The old timers would know the customers were stealing gas because instead of finding coins in the meter they found "WATER".

Now that President Biden has signed into law the debt-ceiling deal, what can we expect in the next 17 months leading up to the 2024 election?

1. House MAGA Republicans will be less of a force.

It was supposed to be their ace in the hole, their single biggest bargaining leverage. But in the end, House MAGA Republicans got surprisingly little out of their agreement to increase the debt ceiling.

Yes, they acted irresponsibly. They manufactured a debt crisis out of whole cloth. They played a reckless hostage-taking game. They could have wrecked the full faith and credit of the United States. They demanded spending cuts that would have hurt lots of vulnerable Americans.

Yet in the end, they got almost zilch. They’ve been shown to be paper tigers.

The final deal leaves Biden’s economic agenda mainly untouched (except for a limited rollback of some IRS funds and the ending of a pause on federal student loan payments expected to expire anyway).

And although it imposes new work requirements for the beneficiaries of some federal aid, including childless adults who receive food stamps, it increases spending in the program (and is expected to cover more people) while sparing Medicaid.

I very much doubt that Kevin McCarthy has suddenly discovered the virtues of compromise and bipartisanship. His speakership continues to depend on the support of MAGA crazies in the House like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jim Jordan, Scott Perry, and Lauren Boebert.

I expect that in coming months the House MAGAs will do all sorts of outrageous things to demonstrate fealty to their Republican base: try to impeach Biden, drag Hunter Biden through muddy hearings, pass bills prioritizing freedom of religion above all other values, even flirt with a national abortion ban.

Their hearings will get lots of play on Fox News and Newsmax, but they’ll lead nowhere, and their bills will die in the Senate.

2. Biden’s quiet diplomacy is working, at least for now.

Biden didn’t try to rally the public behind him. He might have told the nation why the very existence of the debt ceiling was an affront to both the Constitution and the nation’s standing. He could have threatened to use the 14th Amendment and publicly invited the Supreme Court to rule on it.

But this was not Biden. In his 50 years of public service, he has never delivered a speech with the power to alter the public’s understanding of a major issue.

Over the next 17 months, Biden won’t take on MAGA Republicans openly and vociferously, no matter how outrageously they act. Instead, he’ll quietly work away at implementing his infrastructure, technology, and climate legislation.

3. The Trump factor wasn’t in play, but it will be.

As in Sherlock Holmes’s mystery “The Dog That Didn’t Bark,” silence was a big part of the story — in this case, that of Donald Trump during the critical final weeks of negotiation.

Had Trump weighed in loudly against it, House Republicans would not have gone along.

Biden’s behind-the-scenes strategy of compromise will work less well closer to the election, as America is subjected to full-bore Trump. And it’s certainly no match for a growing White Christian Nationalist movement that Trump has enabled, which threatens the very essence of American democracy.

Some commentators argue that the debt-ceiling deal begins to “reestablish a broad bipartisan political center.”

Rubbish. There can be no center to American politics as long as most Republican voters support Trump and most Republican lawmakers follow Trump’s lead. There’s no “center” between democracy and authoritarianism.

4. The debt will continue to soar, but that may not be a problem.

The debt agreement will cut expected increases in federal spending by $1.5 trillion over a decade, mainly by freezing some funding and limiting spending to 1 percent growth in 2025.

Yet the national debt as a percentage of the total economy will continue to grow.

This is largely due to the inevitable demographics of baby boomers — who will be retiring and collecting Social Security and Medicare.

Republicans will almost certainly take their debt savings as an invitation for more tax cuts on the wealthy and big corporations, just as they turned savings from their 2011 deal into the 2017 tax cut.

Democrats should resist this and continue to demand that the rich pay their fair share of taxes. Democrats must also advocate for more generous safety nets and public investments.

There’s no good reason the U.S. remains the only rich nation without paid family leave, paid vacations, universal health care, affordable college, child and elder care. These are all hugely popular with voters. Make them issues for 2024.

As to the debt itself, neither party really cares about it. Although it has doubled from $15 trillion in 2011 to $31.4 trillion now, it has not had any obvious negative effect on the economy.

5. The federal budget will become little more than Social Security, Medicare, and defense.

Perhaps the biggest single shift in Republican strategy as revealed in the debt deal is the GOP’s newfound willingness to protect Social Security and Medicare.

Think how far we’ve come from 2005 when George W. Bush tried to privatize Social Security. This time around, MAGA Republicans went out of their way to wall off these popular programs. (Trump warned MAGAs not to touch them.)

In a few years, if present trends continue, the federal budget will essentially be Social Security, Medicare, and national defense — with a few odds and ends tacked on. Non-defense discretionary spending has been falling as a share of the economy for several years, and it will now fall even farther.

I don’t want to minimize the significance of what just occurred. America has dodged a lethal bullet. Biden played it about as well as it could have been played, given who he is and who they are. Had the debt ceiling not been lifted, we’d be facing economic Armageddon within days.

But in terms of the factors contributing to that lethal bullet, little has changed. The MAGA Republicans have been stymied for now, but they’re still dangerous as hell.

In the 1960s, a new group of young, long-haired and wild people began to form in San Francisco, California and soon spread throughout the rest of the country. These people were given the name hippies, defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as, “a usually young person who rejects the mores of established society and advocates a nonviolent ethic.” Hippies were young adults that derived from the middle-class, rejecting the older generation’s rules and rebelling against the ideal of work and ambition. The hippie movement started to form after President Kennedy’s assassination and became even more apparent because of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement and the surfacing of mind-altering drugs and a new kind of music. Because of the hippie movement, laws have been created banning illicit drugs and discrimination and more races, ethnicities and lifestyles are accepted.

Hippies created their own counterculture that revolved around free love, peace, drugs and music. They were the anti-establishment, outraged by the Vietnam War and protested for peace. Hippies were non-violent and turned to drugs and music to rebel and to feel freedom and a new experience. They believed in expanding their sexual relations, encouraging any kind of sex and throwing all taboos out the window. They encouraged nudity, going against the old Puritan values of modesty and finding the beauty in the human body. Hippies wanted healthier, more organic food to eat, contrary to the manufactured, TV-styled dinners that many Americans had come to enjoy. The hippie movement was all about discovering new things, exploring new ideas and rebelling against society.

In 1963, the U.S. president John F. Kennedy was assassinated, thus beginning to alienate American youth from the government. After Kennedy’s murder, the ideas of conspiracy and government cover-ups gripped America and caused an epidemic of paranoia. The media helped to create the post World War II era a climate of fear of communism by emphasizing the growing strength of the enemy every day.

In 1965, after the Vietnam War had been active for nearly ten years, Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, initiated a strong escalation of the American involvement in Vietnam. By 1968, there were massive anti-Vietnam War marches, protests, sit-ins and student strikes in major cities and on college and university campuses across the country. Young men were being drafted against their will to fight in the war and over time, their resistance grew stronger, leading up to even more protests. Leading most of these protests were hippies. Young adults had become disgusted with the war and the society they lived in and rebelled against the traditional American lifestyle, craving peace and happiness.

As the Vietnam War dragged on, the nation watched their world crash and their loved ones come home wounded or sometimes not even come home at all. Hippies, along with many others, grew dreary and just wanted everyone to get along, so they were directly affected by the Civil Rights Movement. Many hippies believed that everybody was equal and that everyone deserved the same right to go to school and vote. Along with war protests, they also took part in protests against discrimination. They did not just march and use their voices to protest against the war and racism, but they also used their appearance by growing out their hair, wearing colorful clothing and jewelry and patching up their jeans.

Along with their bold clothing choices, hippies, along with many others, took advantage of a new form of contraception that was being offered known as “The Pill.” Sex no longer meant having children, so it became more casual. Free love was a common concept at the time and hippies believed that one was free to love whomever they pleased, however and whenever they pleased. This philosophy encouraged young adults to explore their sexuality more than they had before. Sex became an open and accepted part of the hippie lifestyle and many explored non-traditional sex, including group sex, public sex and homosexual sex.

Hippies discovered new ways to express themselves through protests and sex; they also turned to music as a form of emotional, spiritual and political expression. Music was more than just a form of entertainment, but it also passed on a message and allowed people to explore their inner world and guide them on a quest for meaning. Along with music, hippies used drugs such as marijuana and LSD for self-exploration, freedom, rebellion and a new experience. At the time, people did not know the dangers of drug use and it was normal to smoke or swallow whatever was handed to them. The infatuation with LSD lasted for a number of years until it started to get negative publicity because of the traumatic trips and flashbacks that began to emerge. On October 6th, 1966, LSD was made illegal in the United States, although the prohibition did not lead to a lower consumption until years later. On October 27th, 1970, the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act was passed, fighting against drug abuse and preventing the possession of controlled substances

The hippie movement was a direct effect on the laws that were created to prevent drug use that still exist today. The hippie movement also affected the Civil Rights Movement, which eventually resulted in several laws giving African Americans and women the same rights and white men, including the equal rights to vote and to an education and work. Women are no longer expected to be housewives and it is accepted if a woman wants to have a job.

Distinct appearance and clothing was also one of the immediate legacies of hippies. Since that time, a wide range of personal appearance options and clothing styles, including nudity, have become more widely acceptable, all of which was uncommon before the hippie era. Hippies also inspired the decline in popularity of the necktie and other business clothing, which had been unavoidable for men during the 1950s and early 1960s. Additionally, the style of the 1960s hippies influenced clothing fashions and trends for decades after and some still exist among the teenage population today, especially the peace symbol and colorful jewelry.

Because of hippie’s sexual openness, alternative lifestyles such as homosexuality and transexuality are generally more accepted. Young adults have become more sexually active at a younger age because of the influence of past generations. Overall, the hippie movement was a time of not only exploring oneself and rebelling against society, but it was also a time of acceptance. After the hippie movement, African Americans, working women, homosexuals, nudity and non-traditional apparel all became generally more accepted. Without the hippie movement, the United States would not be as free and adoptive as it is today. The 1960s was a highly influential time and the hippies were highly influential people. Bob Dylan, a musical sensation and activist of the hippie movement said, “People today are still living off the table scraps of the sixties. They are still being passed around – the music and the ideas.”

HUMBOLDT – The state of California is making an unprecedented investment in the arts. The “California Creative Corps” program will award $60 million in grants statewide to implement media, outreach and engagement campaigns.
The goal is to increase awareness related to issues such as public health, water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, and emergency preparedness, relief and recovery.
The Nevada County Arts Council is the administering organization for the upstate region, which covers 19 counties in the northern part of the state. It will award more than $3 million in grants for artists, as well as for arts and social service organizations that will employ artists between Spring 2023 and Spring 2024.
Supporting local outreach with local knowledge, as well as technical assistance for artists, and program development and evaluation, are multiple county arts agencies serving what amounts to the largest, most diverse, geographic area in California.
“We are identifying issues that are specific to communities across our service region, and inviting artists to position themselves to create awareness around them and get paid for it,” says Eliza Tudor, executive director at Nevada County Arts Council. “We want our process to be as inclusive and accessible as possible and to draw upon creative processes that spur conversation around how to create lasting change that our diverse populations can take pride in.”
The launch of a statewide Creative Corps pilot program is the first of its kind in the nation. Grant applications are now open and will run until Friday, April 14. Mechanisms in place for support in the grant application process include informational webinars, grant writing workshops, training and panel discussions.

Moving Earth flag above American flag in Arcata is reportedly legal...

ARCATA, Calif. — After serious discussion on the Earth flag is making its way to the top of the flag pole in Arcata and an associate professor at Cal Poly Humboldt says, the City of Arcata will face no legal action against it.
The placements of the flags will change after residents in Arcata voted "yes" on Measure M during the recent election.
However, this is not sitting well with some Veterans who say it's disrespectful that another flag will fly above a flag they fought for. Pierre, a Vietnam War Veteran says, "It broke my heart is what it did. It was like an insult to every veteran that gave his life gave a part of his body and family members who have veterans in them. It was a deeply saddening of my heart to even think of putting something above the American flag."
It's only a matter of time before all three city-owned flag poles will have the Earth flag on top, according to Dave Meserve who initiated the measure. Meserve says, he is proud that residents of Arcata understood his message of keeping the Earth clean.
"We need to recognize that we can't have a healthy nation unless we have a healthy Earth and so I think we need to focus our energies on the Earth as a priority. And having the Earth flag on top would remind us of that. And, again, no disrespect intended," Meserve says.
Many have raised questions over whether Measure M violates U.S. Flag Code, a set of guidelines governing the display of the United States flag. Part of the code says "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America."
Cal Poly Humboldt Associate Professor Joice Chang says based on her understanding the U.S. Flag Code is not enforceable because of the way it's worded. "I want to point out something really quickly: So the word 'should' is used all over the statute itself, alright. So instead of 'shall' or 'so' there's a sense that when the word 'should' is used, its advisory, or it's recommended, versus say, if a word like shall is used, then it's mandatory."
In addition, Chang believes the city of Arcata won't run into issues with the law once the earth flag is up. "There's no punishment, because there's no criminal law that exists to punish this particular kind of behavior," Chang said.
Arcata looks to be the first city in the U.S. to put another flag on top of the American flag on city-owned flag poles.

A few days ago there was a picture of a man on the front page of this paper. He stood on a bare dirt levy and behind him was a sweeping vista of open water harvested from local streams and diverted by millions in grant funding. What struck me was the man was the only living thing in the photo. The earth he stood on was bare, and the ponded water had not a green leaf or waterfowl on it. Man alone, standing on earth reduced to its singular elements; nature stripped and mined for elements and subsidized profits. Many of our local winter orchards look the same, subsidized monocultures.  Most of the damage done to the nature that spawned us has occurred in the last 100 years – over half of that in the last 30. I look at the roadways and the growing cracks exposed by the rains and know there is not the human dollars to maintain them. – Never was. There are cracks in everything.  The dawn that beams through those cracks are every day less likely to shine well on us. I could stop there. But, though these lands are mostly dead, others sing.

To make gardens, farms, ranches, orchards sing, any land manager has but to contact the local Resource Conservation Districts, and/or avail yourself of the resources at the Regenerative Agriculture Program at CSU, Chico.

Jesus would be labeled woke, too

Why are Gov. DeSantis and his Republican cohorts impinging on the First Amendment rights of U.S. Christians, namely, “prohibiting the free exercise” of religion?
Christians are required to follow the teachings of Jesus who, according to the New Testament, demonstrated many teaching examples of inclusion and equality, and instructed his followers to love their neighbors, i.e., their fellow humans. These days Jesus would be labeled as “woke” because of his concern for others, and he would be derided by our Florida leaders and their followers.
Gov. DeSantis has promised to destroy “woke." Christians cannot fulfill their mission of helping others if Gov. DeSantis and the Republicans in the Florida Legislature enact laws against this help.
In addition to violating our constitutional rights, Gov. DeSantis and his followers erroneously portray Florida as a “Freedom State." What freedom? The freedom for their children to infect others by not wearing masks during a pandemic, enabling them to sneeze or cough germs on to others? The freedom from education, by selectively banning what knowledge can be taught? The freedom for children to suffer abuse by denying them specific health care?
Florida Statutes Chapter 39.02 defines child abuse as “any willful act or threatened act that results in any physical, mental, or sexual abuse, injury, or harm that causes or is likely to cause the child’s physical, mental, or emotional health to be significantly impaired.” As a mandated reporter, should I report Gov. DeSantis for child abuse?

A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.

Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.

And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.

Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.

He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.

He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.

That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.

After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.

In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:

‘My God… what… have… I… created?

If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.
