There are a ridiculous number of Teslas on the roads here in Silicon Valley. Yesterday as I drove up the peninsula, it was striking how many there were. Teslas easily outnumbered all of the other cars on the freeway. At one point I had 4 Model X's in front of me which were all identical, same color and everything. And when I parked my car, I had a Tesla on either side of me. I typically see several cyber trucks every day, too. I assume that the reason there are so many Teslas here is because there is so much money here. But with everything Elon Musk is doing to our government right now, I hate the fact that so many people around here are driving his cars. Silicon Valley is very "blue," so I really hope that at least some of these people will eventually get rid of their Teslas and get a different electric vehicle which isn't made by a company owned by a fascist.

I want to talk today about the media’s coverage of the Trump-Vance-Musk coup.
I’m not referring to coverage by the bonkers right-wing media of Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News and its imitators.
I’m referring to the U.S. mainstream media — The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, National Public Radio — and the mainstream media abroad, such as the BBC and The Guardian.
By not calling it a coup, the mainstream media is failing to communicate the gravity of what is occurring.
Thursday’s opinion by The New York Times’ editorial board offers a pathetic example. It concedes that Trump and his top associates “are stress-testing the Constitution, and the nation, to a degree not seen since the Civil War” but then asks: “Are we in a constitutional crisis yet?” and answers that what Trump is doing “should be taken as a flashing warning sign.”
Warning sign?
Elon Musk’s meddling into the machinery of government is a part of the coup. Musk and his muskrats have no legal right to break into the federal payments system or any of the other sensitive data systems they’re invading, for which they continue to gather computer code.
This data is the lifeblood of our government. It is used to pay Social Security and Medicare. It measures inflation and jobs. Americans have entrusted our private information to professional civil servants who are bound by law to use it only for the purposes to which it is intended. In the wrong hands, without legal authority, it could be used to control or mislead Americans.
By failing to use the term “coup,” the media have also underplayed the Trump-Vance-Musk regime’s freeze on practically all federal funding — suggesting this is a normal part of the pull-and-tug of politics. It is not. Congress has the sole authority to appropriate money. The freeze is illegal and unconstitutional.
By not calling it a coup, the media have also permitted Americans to view the regime’s refusal to follow the orders of the federal courts as a political response, albeit an extreme one, to judicial rulings that are at odds with what a president wants.
There is nothing about the regime’s refusal to be bound by the courts that places it within the boundaries of acceptable politics. Our system of government gives the federal judiciary final say about whether actions of the executive are legal and constitutional. Refusal to be bound by federal court rulings shows how rogue this regime truly is.
Earlier this week, a federal judge excoriated the regime for failing to comply with “the plain text” of an edict the judge issued last month to release billions of dollars in federal grants. Vice President JD Vance, presumably in response, declared that “judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.”
Vance graduated from the same law school I did. He knows he’s speaking out of his derriere.
In sum, the regime’s disregard for laws and constitutional provisions surrounding access to private data, impoundment of funds appropriated by Congress, and refusal to be bound by judicial orders amount to a takeover of our democracy by a handful of men who have no legal authority to do so.
If this is not a coup d’etat, I don’t know what is.
The mainstream media must call this what it is. In doing so, they would not be “taking sides” in a political dispute. They would be accurately describing the dire emergency America now faces.
Unless Americans see it and understand the whole of it for what it is rather than piecemeal stories that “flood the zone,” Americans cannot possibly respond to the whole of it. The regime is undertaking so many outrageous initiatives that the big picture cannot be seen without it being described clearly and simply.
Unless Americans understand that this is indeed a coup that’s wildly illegal and fundamentally unconstitutional — not just because that happens to be the opinion of constitutional scholars or professors of law, or the views of Trump’s political opponents, but because it is objectively and in reality a coup — Americans cannot rise up as the clear majority we are, and demand that democracy be restored.

You recently criticized me and another prominent lawyer fighting for the rule of law and democracy in the United States. I am used to being attacked for my work, particularly on the platform you own and dominate.
I used to be a regular on Twitter, where I amassed over 900,000 followers — all organic except for the right-wing bots who seemed to grow in number. Like many others, I stopped regularly posting on the site because, under your stewardship, it became a hellscape of hate and misinformation.
I also used to buy your cars — first a Model X and then a Model S — back when you spoke optimistically about solving the climate crisis. My family no longer owns any of your cars and never will.
But this is not the reason I am writing. You don’t know me. You have no idea whether I have suffered trauma and if I have, how it has manifested. And it’s none of your business.
However, I will address your last point about generational trauma. I am Jewish, though many on your site simply call me “a jew.” Honestly, it’s often worse than that, but I’m sure you get the point. There was a time when Twitter would remove antisemitic posts, but under your leadership, tolerating the world’s oldest hatred now seems to be a permissible part of your “free speech” agenda.
Like many Jewish families, mine came to America because of trauma. They were fleeing persecution in the Pale of Settlement — the only area in the Russian Empire where Jews were legally allowed to reside. Even there, life was difficult — often traumatic. My family, like others, lived in a shtetl and was poor. Worse, pogroms were common — violent riots in which Jews were beaten, killed and expelled from their villages.
By the time my family fled, life in the Pale had become all but impossible for Jews. Tsar Nicholas II’s government spread anti-Jewish propaganda that encouraged Russians to attack and steal from Jews in their communities. My great-grandfather was fortunate to leave when he did. Those who stayed faced even worse circumstances when Hitler’s army later invaded.
That is the generational trauma I carry. The trauma of being treated as “other” by countrymen you once thought were your friends. The trauma of being scapegoated by authoritarian leaders. The trauma of fleeing while millions of others were systematically murdered. The trauma of watching powerful men treat it all as a joke — or worse.
As an immigrant yourself, you can no doubt sympathize with what it means to leave behind your country, extended family, friends and neighbors to come to the United States. Of course, you probably had more than 86 rubles in your pocket. You probably didn’t ride for nine days in the bottom of a ship or have your surname changed by immigration officials. Here is the ship manifest showing that my family did. Aron, age three, was my grandfather.

As new immigrants, life wasn’t easy. My family lived in cramped housing without hot water. They worked menial jobs — the kind immigrants still perform today.
Some may look down on those immigrants — the ones without fancy degrees — but my family was proud to work and grateful that the United States took them in. They found support within their Jewish community and a political home in the Democratic Party.
I became a lawyer to give back to the country that gave my family a chance. I specialize in representing Democratic campaigns because I believe in the party. I litigate voting rights cases because the right to vote is the bedrock of our democracy. I speak out about free and fair elections because they are under threat.
Now let me address the real crux of your post.
You are very rich and very powerful. You have thrown in with Donald Trump. Whether it is because you think you can control him or because you share his authoritarian vision, I do not know. I do not care.
Together, you and he are dismantling our government, undermining the rule of law and harming the most vulnerable in our society. I am just a lawyer. I do not have your wealth or your platform. I do not control the vast power of the federal government, nor do I have millions of adherents at my disposal to harass and intimidate my opponents. I may even carry generational trauma.
But you need to know this about me. I am the great-grandson of a man who led his family out of the shtetl to a strange land in search of a better life. I am the grandson of the three-year-old boy on that journey. As you know, my English name is Marc, but my Hebrew name is Elhanan (אֶלְחָנָן) — after the great warrior in David’s army who slew a powerful giant.
I will use every tool at my disposal to protect this country from Trump. I will litigate to defend voting rights until there are no cases left to bring. I will speak out against authoritarianism until my last breath.

Elon Musk Gives US Federal Workers 48 Hours to Prove They Did Anything – Or Get the Boot
Hundreds of thousands of US federal workers have just 48 hours to justify their jobs—or risk being out of one.
The order comes straight from Elon Musk, who’s now leading the charge on government cuts under President Trump. And in classic Musk fashion, he dropped the bombshell on X, saying:
“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”
Minutes later, inboxes across federal agencies lit up with a blunt, three-line email:
“Please reply to this email with approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week and cc your manager.”
Deadline? Monday, 11:59pm.
Cue confusion across government offices. Judges, prison staff, and even meteorologists at the National Weather Service scrambled to figure out if this was a joke—or a serious demand. Some agencies told employees not to respond, while others were left guessing.
This isn’t the first major shake-up. Since Trump’s return to the White House, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has been clearing house. Thousands of workers across Veterans Affairs, Defense, the IRS, and National Parks have already been let go, with more cuts expected.
Union leaders are furious. Everett Kelley from the American Federation of Government Employees slammed the move, calling it “cruel and disrespectful,” adding:
“A billionaire who’s never done a single hour of public service has no right to question those who dedicate their lives to it.”
Meanwhile, Musk seems to be enjoying the chaos. Just last week, he waved around a literal chainsaw at a conservative event, calling it “the chainsaw for bureaucracy.” Subtle.
The Office of Personnel Management has confirmed the email is real, but agencies are on their own when it comes to deciding what happens next. Some, like the federal courts, have already told employees to ignore it. One judge admitted he got a similar message in January—and just deleted it.
The National Weather Service, on the other hand, is still trying to figure things out, telling employees:
“Until we can verify that the message is authentic, please do not respond.” So, will this mass audit actually lead to job cuts? Or is it just Musk flexing his authority? Either way, federal employees might want to start keeping track of their workload—just in case.

Something that happened yesterday when Teresa and I were in line to pay for our groceries. An old lady behind us looked at us when Teresa asked me, “Are we in trouble?” I said no, she’s too told. Anyway, the lady came up to us and asked us if we voted for Trump, and I quickly said no, we would never vote for him. Then she started saying something like this:
“I’m sorry, we’re not all racists, much less idiots, and I know that you’re being targeted by him. People voted for him because of the damn border and to have low prices, but what we’re seeing are innocent people being deported and prices going up. I’m 79 years old and I’ve never seen so much corruption together and with the acceptance of so many people, it seems like this country is drifting. I’m ashamed to be American and I fear a lot for the future of my children and grandchildren. Once again, forgive us.” I personally think that we can still fix this country and things like this make us strong.

The thing about Daylight Saving Time is, all it does is force everyone to wake up an hour early for 8 months out of the year. Right now, if I wake naturally at 7am, the sun is up and it's actually 7am. But in a few days, 6am becomes 7am. Now I'll need to set an alarm if I want to get up at 7, because my body knows it's really 6, and it's still dark at 6, but we're supposed to pretend it's 7. Then, the evening clock reads 8pm when the true time is 7pm. If you have to get to bed by 10, it's really only 9, but if you have a schedule that requires you to get up early the next morning, you need to force yourself to go to bed an hour earlier because the clock now falsely says that it's an hour LATER. This makes it more difficult for me to enjoy the evening light because I now have to get to bed earlier than I would if we didn't change the clock, and I also have to get up earlier than I would if we didn't change the clock. None of it really makes any sense. The days get longer naturally this time of year, and I'd enjoy that extra daylight a lot more if the clock shows an earlier time. I don't understand the appeal of having the clock show a later time, because most people have some sort of schedule that they need to adhere to, so how can you enjoy that evening light if the clock claims it's later than it should be?
I'm not as bad as I used to be with mornings, but I've also never been a good sleeper. The early morning is the time of day that I'm most likely to be in my deepest state of sleep. Morning sleep hours are very precious to me. This is why I work from 9am to 6pm while my coworker works from 8am to 5pm. Sure, it would be nice to be off work at 5, but I'd rather work until 6 if it means I can get that precious extra hour of sleep in the morning. When I've been looking for work, the start time of my work day is always a hugely important thing to consider. If I apply for a job and it turns out they're going to want me to start work at 7am, I will kindly let them know that I'm no longer interested. I need jobs with LATER morning start times, or at least flexible start times, because my morning sleep is extremely precious.
If people like getting up an hour early in order to have more daylight at the end of the day, they are free to get up as early as they want and start their day as early as they want. But it's not right for everyone else to be FORCED to wake up an hour early for EIGHT MONTHS out of the year. We should be on Standard Time, which is the CORRECT time, and people can adjust their own schedules however they want. Arizona and Hawaii are both on Standard Time year-round, and I've never once heard anyone living in either of those states say that they wish they were forced to wake up an hour early and go to bed an hour early at night. That's literally all DST does.

The guard relented, but when DOGE reached the USADF floor the staffers refused to grant them entry.The USADF staff told The Washington Post that they knew that DOGE wanted to dismantle their agency and saw this moment as their last chance to block Musk's boys from accessing their system.Ward Brehm, the head of USADF, was not present for the dramatic encounter but he had previously sent a letter to DOGE barring any meetings unless he was present."In my absence, I have specifically instructed the staff of USADF to adhere to our rules and procedure of not allowing any meetings of this type without my presence," he wrote.The DOGE group was eventually joined by Pete Marocco from the State Department, a MAGA minion who has been working to slash foreign aid, and they threatened to come back the next day.Denied entry to the USADF offices, the DOGE team wandered the halls aimlessly and eventually left in defeat an hour later.A brief video of the standoff has gone viral on X after being shared by a ProPublica reporter who obtained permission from the USADF employees to post. The last ones in are suckers left holding worthless bags.Social Security is not a Ponzi scheme. It’s a high-functioning, universal, and exceptionally efficient part of the American social safety net — the opposite of a Ponzi scheme. Which is why the overwhelming majority of Americans oppose cutting it.Social Security is a simple “pay as you go” program. Current workers, via the payroll tax, fund payouts for retirees and disabled people. In 2024, about 1 in 5 U.S. residents received Social Security.I used to be a trustee of the Social Security trust fund. I know what I’m talking about.As the Social Security Administration explains, “In 2025, when you work, about 85 cents of every Social Security tax dollar you pay goes to a trust fund. This fund pays monthly benefits to current retirees and their families and to surviving spouses and children of workers who have died. About 15 cents goes to a trust fund that pays benefits to people with disabilities and their families.”The only reason that the Social Security trust fund is slowly running out of money is the trustees never anticipated that so much of the nation’s total income would be in the hands of so few people (such as Elon Musk).The simple way to fix this is to lift the cap on income subject to Social Security payroll taxes, which is now $176,100.Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg fulfilled their 2025 Social Security payroll tax obligations a few minutes past midnight on January 1. It’s emerging from a four-year federal crackdown on crypto fraud, market manipulation, and other scams following the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto exchange FTX in 2022 — one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in recent memory.Today, Trump even held a “crypto summit” at which he promoted the idea of a federal crypto reserve that will give crypto schemes a temporary boost by increasing demand for them.But why should American taxpayers foot the bill for a crypto reserve? The most obvious winner will be Trump, whose own crypto venture carries millions of dollars in tokens that are to be included in the reserve.Other winners will be crypto executives, many of whom donated extensively to Trump’s reelection effort. An open invitation to more Trump Ponzi schemes.My real dread has to do with the much bigger Ponzi scheme that Trump and Musk are peddling.They’re promising huge “savings” from destroying the federal government — including programs like Social Security and Medicaid — savings that will go to America’s wealthy and big corporations in the form of tax cuts.At Musk’s urging, the Social Security Administration recently announced it will consolidate the current 10 regional offices it maintains into four and cut at least 7,000 jobs from an agency already at a 50-year staffing low.The Republican budget recently pushed through the House cuts over $880 billion out of Medicaid.Who will get left holding the bag? Most Americans.Zoom out and you’ll see the biggest Ponzi scheme of them all — the entire Trump 2 regime.Trump is promising to “make America great again” by raising tariffs, deporting more than 11 million people, taking a wrecking ball to the federal government, pulverizing democracy, and joining Putin and other global dictators.Trump is the con artist behind this giant Ponzi scheme. He lured voters into this fake MAGA project, pocketed some of the cash and rewarded his billionaire backers and friends (including Musk) with more, and will leave most Americans with a corrupt and decimated society.I’m still optimistic about our power to overcome this and our resilience in bouncing back from it. But the dread I feel when I open my eyes in the morning concerns the sheer magnitude of the largest and most cynical Ponzi scheme in history.What are your thoughts?
