SE SAID: This is so true. I remember anxiously awaiting the release date of certain albums by my favorite bands, and it was like a global collective experience because all of the fans all over the world were also waiting. And you got to hear the evolution of the band's music as you listen to their albums in order. And you'd go to the record store on the release date because you were so excited about the new album. Albums still have release dates, and I suppose fans still get excited about it, but it doesn't seem to have the same magic since most people are buying the album on their computer in their home by themselves, rather than at a busy record store full of excited fans of the band whose album you are there to buy, and often it will be playing in the store. I remember when I worked at Tower Records in 1989-1990, it was always busy and lively on the release date of a new album. One I remember clearly from when I worked there was the release of Bonnie Raitt "Nick of Time," and Queensryche "Empire." I also remember when "Vogue" by Madonna was released as a single. I rang up thousands of the cd's and cassette singles that day, and I still have mine.

An album should be consumed whole... 

Now we've got mp3s and mixed spotify-type playlists, splitting all the carefully designed song transitions, and removing the deep soul connection we used to be able to have with new music, as it was being told like a story of songs...

And you had to sit with one or 2 sets of new songs for weeks, maybe months, maybe years before you could afford another tape/cd... you got intimate with your music, and none of it was disposable...

Nowadays, though...

The trade-off i suppose is accessibility.  Almost anything can be found if you look deep enough... but also so much is lost because not all music in the world will be saved by digital restoration... 

People are able to choose from thousands of songs at any time... which is nice.  But we don't as often get put into the situation of getting really familiar with music, in a specific album order, because we had no choice but to wait for anything else... 

We appreciated the music more when we knew the CD or tape was our only source... 

Now we can download and delete music at a moments notice... convenient.... but doesn't make us focus enough to sit and appreciate like we used to... 

Some of us still choose to, of course...

SE REPLIED: Oh yeah, I loved all of the cool stuff inside of the album, especially the lyrics, but also the pictures and artwork and other stuff. It was even cooler with record albums. All of that is pretty much gone now. I mean, I guess it's virtual, but there was something about buying a physical album and holding it in your hands.

I went looking for a quote and could not find it, however it works like this. If you give assistance to the little people they will spend it in the local stores, thereby keeping the stores open and those folks getting paychecks. The stores will order supplies and keep the suppliers and the delivery drivers in business, thereby paychecks flow to those workers and so on and so on. The money keeps working it's way up and finally gets to the mortgage lenders, business lenders and finally to those who profit by all that consumer activity. In the end, the wealthy finally get their hands on it, but in the meantime all others have also benefited.

I never used to have a problem with daylight savings time back when we had 6 months of standard time and 6 months of daylight time. That was how it was my entire life, and it made sense. 6 months of one, 6 months of the other…and when we moved the clocks back in the fall, it was always the Saturday before Halloween, which also made sense because now it would get dark nice and early on Halloween night. But in 2007, all of a sudden they changed it to 8 months of daylight time and 4 months of standard time – and we now move the clock back on the Saturday AFTER Halloween instead of before. This makes no sense to me at all. I absolutely love getting that extra hour in the fall, but I only get to enjoy 4 months of it before they take the hour away again – for 8 MONTHS. Why did they change it? Does anyone else agree with me that they should either go back to 6 months of each or abolish the whole thing altogether?? Or, if we must have 8 months of one and only 4 months of the other, why not do it in reverse: 4 months of daylight time between, say, May and September, then give us back that hour and have 8 months of standard time? Is it really necessary to have 8 months of daylight savings time? I mean, we do have this handy thing called electricity nowadays…

I did not know this... Thanks... I remember that when I was working at Radio Shack we had MANY Customers come it to have us change the time because they couldn't figure it out themselves... We were Glad to do it because all the watches HAVE THE SAME CHIP so once you figure out one, all the rest are the same... and We Love Having Customers in the Store... For ANY Reason... That's a Chance to sell 'em something! OF COURSE... No one ever changes the time in a CAR RADIO because That's Just Too Damn Complex... so everyone simply adds an hour to get the correct time... or subtracts... depending on what time of the Year it is... I Vote for NO Time Changes at all...

I'd like to be on Standard Time year-round, but NOT Daylight Savings because the dark mornings during the wintertime are brutal. But I actually don't mind changing the clocks twice a year because the one in the fall makes me feel SO good, when we get the hour back in the morning. That's coming up really soon, too. It's always most most productive day of the entire year.

You are correct. The amount of daylight is the same, regardless of what the clocks says...and the days get shorter during the winter no matter what we do with the clocks. I'm in favor of leaving the clocks on Standard Time year-round, but NOT DST, because year-round DST would mean that the mornings would be dark until almost 9am in the dead of winter when it's freezing cold. I support changing the clocks if it means we get to have sunlight in the morning during the winter...but if the only option is year-round DST and dark winter mornings, I'd prefer to keep changing the clocks back and forth.
