Friends, Republican leaders have mastered the art of manufacturing crises to divert the public’s attention from the real crisis of our era — the siphoning off of income, wealth, and power by a small group at the top.
Consider the fake fears they’ve been whipping up:
1. “Woke.” Florida’s governor (and now Republican presidential candidate) Ron DeSantis has declared “war on woke.” Immediately after the mangled launch to his campaign on Wednesday, he claimed on Fox News that “the woke mind virus is basically a form of cultural Marxism.” But what is woke? Can anyone define it? It seems like an all-encompassing term for what we used to consider tolerance — an attribute that in a different age was considered positive.
2. “Trans people.” Former president Donald Trump says that one of his top priorities if he’s reelected in 2024 will be a “sweeping federal rollback of transgender rights.” But why have he and so many Republican lawmakers targeted transgender people as dangers to the public? There’s not a shred of evidence that trans people are threats to anyone. But they’re easy scapegoats.
3. “Critical race theory.” Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s “day one” executive order banned the teaching of critical race theory. DeSantis and Texas Governor Greg Abbott have also banned it from the schools. Here again, though, there’s no evidence of a public threat. CRT simply teaches America’s history of racism, which students need to understand to be informed citizens. Banning it is a scare tactic to appeal to a largely white, culturally conservative voter base.
4. “Couch potatoes.” In the negotiations over a bill to raise the debt ceiling, Republicans demanded that work requirements be added to food stamps and welfare, alleging that too many “couch potatoes” were receiving benefits. Like Ronald Reagan’s claim that so-called “welfare queens” were collecting benefits without working, the “couch potato” characterization is a cruel pretext — and racial dog whistle — for imposing additional work requirements on public assistance for those in need, when the needy often have difficulty finding work that pays enough to live on. The vast majority of poor people who collect benefits already work exceedingly hard.
5. “Out of control government spending.” Rubbish. In fact, discretionary spending has fallen more than 30 percent in the past 50 years as a percentage of the nation’s gross domestic product (from 9.6 percent in 1973 to 6.6 percent in 2022). Lately, rising deficits have been driven by Social Security and Medicare (to be expected, as boomers retire), and by defense spending. But the biggest culprits have been George W. Bush’s and Donald Trump’s huge tax cuts that mostly benefited the wealthy and big corporations — and that will have added $8 trillion and $1.7 trillion, respectively, to the debt by the end of the 2023 fiscal year.
All five of these so-called crises have been manufactured by the GOP. They’re entirely made up.
Why? To deflect attention from the near record share of the nation’s income and wealth now going to the richest Americans.
As the super-wealthy and big corporations pour money into politics — especially into the GOP — they don’t want the rest of America to notice they’re rigging the economy for their own benefit, that their unrestrained greed is worsening the climate crisis, and that they’re also undermining democracy.
So the game of the Republican Party and their major donors is to deflect and distract — to use scapegoating, racism, and outright lies to disguise what’s really going on.

The measure was approved, 217-207. Republicans unanimously opposed the bill, along with four Democrats.

I went looking for a quote and could not find it, however it works like this. If you give assistance to the little people they will spend it in the local stores, thereby keeping the stores open and those folks getting paychecks. The stores will order supplies and keep the suppliers and the delivery drivers in business, thereby paychecks flow to those workers and so on and so on. The money keeps working it's way up and finally gets to the mortgage lenders, business lenders and finally to those who profit by all that consumer activity. In the end, the wealthy finally get their hands on it, but in the meantime all others have also benefited.

On a Different Subject... SE SAID:


I never used to have a problem with daylight savings time back when we had 6 months of standard time and 6 months of daylight time. That was how it was my entire life, and it made sense. 6 months of one, 6 months of the other…and when we moved the clocks back in the fall, it was always the Saturday before Halloween, which also made sense because now it would get dark nice and early on Halloween night. But in 2007, all of a sudden they changed it to 8 months of daylight time and 4 months of standard time – and we now move the clock back on the Saturday AFTER Halloween instead of before. This makes no sense to me at all. I absolutely love getting that extra hour in the fall, but I only get to enjoy 4 months of it before they take the hour away again – for 8 MONTHS. Why did they change it? Does anyone else agree with me that they should either go back to 6 months of each or abolish the whole thing altogether?? Or, if we must have 8 months of one and only 4 months of the other, why not do it in reverse: 4 months of daylight time between, say, May and September, then give us back that hour and have 8 months of standard time? Is it really necessary to have 8 months of daylight savings time? I mean, we do have this handy thing called electricity nowadays…

I did not know this... Thanks... I remember that when I was working at Radio Shack we had MANY Customers come it to have us change the time because they couldn't figure it out themselves... We were Glad to do it because all the watches HAVE THE SAME CHIP so once you figure out one, all the rest are the same... and We Love Having Customers in the Store... For ANY Reason... That's a Chance to sell 'em something! OF COURSE... No one ever changes the time in a CAR RADIO because That's Just Too Damn Complex... so everyone simply adds an hour to get the correct time... or subtracts... depending on what time of the Year it is... I Vote for NO Time Changes at all...

I'd like to be on Standard Time year-round, but NOT Daylight Savings because the dark mornings during the wintertime are brutal. But I actually don't mind changing the clocks twice a year because the one in the fall makes me feel SO good, when we get the hour back in the morning. That's coming up really soon, too. It's always most most productive day of the entire year.

You are correct. The amount of daylight is the same, regardless of what the clocks says...and the days get shorter during the winter no matter what we do with the clocks. I'm in favor of leaving the clocks on Standard Time year-round, but NOT DST, because year-round DST would mean that the mornings would be dark until almost 9am in the dead of winter when it's freezing cold. I support changing the clocks if it means we get to have sunlight in the morning during the winter...but if the only option is year-round DST and dark winter mornings, I'd prefer to keep changing the clocks back and forth.
