What Did I Learn from My Near Death Experience? I've Always Had a Feeling that I Had Some Important Goal to Accomplish. Then I realized...

It wasn't so much of a BIG Goal that was Needed to Be Done but Helping People Daily Thru My Entire Life. Simply Making the World a Better Place To Live. That Was The Lesson. 

Since I Did Not Die at Age 19... I've held Many Jobs that Made a Difference... and I Joined AA where the Opportunity Arose to Do 12th Step Service... and Now that I'm Retired, I Can Write my Blog to Help People Learn How to Live... and Learn History... and Have Fun Printing Drawings to Color... It's a Wonderful World... 

My Jobs Included: Working as a Clerk in an Art Supply Store. I Helped People Buy Art Supplies and Gave Advice on How to Use What They Bought. Sometimes I Gave Bad Advice but In General, I Made the World a Better Place to Live... 

Then I Became a Draftsman in a Computer Company. We Made Machines that Helped Doctors Store their Patient's Charts. That's a Useful Idea... and Every Doctor Now Uses a Computer to Store Patient's Records.

Then I designed Equipment for the US Air Force. Helping to Defend the Country. 

Then I Delivered Pizza at Domino's... Helping Hungry People... Many Couldn't Leave the House... My Work Was Especially Useful During a Snowstorm...   

Then I Sold Electronic Equipment at Radio Shack. Helping People Solve Their Tech Problems. Our Store had a LOT of Retired Engineers that Could Give Accurate Technical Advice. I Learned from Those Old Men. 

Then I worked at The Welfare Department Helping Homeless People Live Indoors... and Get Food and Medicine... and Find a Job...

I Know What it’s Like to Be Dead... 

Recently I Had a Colonoscopy. The Anesthetic used was propofol ( the same Drug that Killed Michael Jackson) – I remember in the Operating Room the Nurse said “Roll Over” and then Instantly I was in the Recovery Room Wondering IF I Had Had a Colonoscopy. So I asked… and She Said The Procedure was Over… and Would I Like a Cup of Coffee?

That’s What I Think Death is Like… Except no one brings you Coffee When You Wake Up because You Never Wake Up…

My Near Death Experience. In 1974 My Friends and I Went Backpacking at Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. One Day We ate LSD and Peyote and Smoked some Marijuana... Then we went Mountain Climbing... 

Since We had a Lot of Extra Energy and Courage, We climbed up a Chimney... a crack in the granite rock where a person can Shimmy Up... I've never done that Before or After that Day. But That was a Special Day... Tripping!

Later, I walked down near the Edge of the Tuolumne River so I Could Watch the Water Bubbling UP in a Big Pool that had been Carved into the Granite over a Million Years...

and I Slipped IN! I Was Swimming Out of Control in the Raging Waters... The River Forced Me to the Bottom of the Pool... and then I GAVE UP... I RELAXED AND ACCEPTED DEATH. 

and then the River Pushed me Up to The Surface at a Spot Where I Could Climb Out. I walked back to the Campsite, got into my sleeping bag and stayed there for The Rest of the Day... Safe and Warm...

World peace is achievable in the simplest of ways…. I wish I knew who deserves credit for this experiment:
A university professor posed a challenge to his students. Each of them had a balloon with their name. The balloons would fall from the ceiling and they would have 5 minutes to find theirs. If everyone found the one with their name, they won... if not, they lost.
Although they tried with all their energy to find them, no one succeeded. The teacher put the balloons back and told them, "When you catch a balloon, give it to its owner". The test took less than 3 minutes to complete.
The teacher finished by saying, "Happiness is like these balloons. If each of us looks only for our own, we will never find it. But if we look for others', we will also find ours." Exactly the same happens with teamwork in companies. If you help others achieve their goals, others will do the same with you.

On Mother's Day, I was at an AA Meeting in Bidwell Park, Chico, Ca... and People were sharing again and again and again about how much they loved their mothers... and I aid: My Mother Drank Herself to Death... and that's why I'm Here today... to make sure I do not drink myself to death... and there was silence... and the mood of the meeting changed... for the better... FYI: Sunday Morning in the Spring, Summer and Autumn is an EPIC AA Meeting... at the Campfire Council Ring...

Bill W. Invented Alcoholics Anonymous on a Psychedelic Trip. "The Belladonna Cure" - Two drugs - Henbane and Belladonna

Bill Wilson, cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) had his spiritual awakening while undergoing this treatment. He never drank again.
Wilson's description of his experience: "All at once I found myself crying out, "If there is a God, let Him show himself! I am ready to do anything, anything! Suddenly the room lit up with a great white light. I was caught up in an ecstasy which there are no words to describe. It seemed to me in my mind's eye, that I was on a mountain and that a wind not of air but of spirit was blowing. And then it burst upon me that I was a free man. Slowly the ecstasy subsided. I lay there on the bed, but now for a time I was in another world, a new world of consciousness... and I thought to myself, "So this is the God of the preachers!" A great peace stole over me."

The Belladonna Cure:
The formula for Towns-Lambert cure was the deliriant, Atropa belladonna, also called deadly nightshade. The effects of belladonna include delirium, hallucinations, light sensitivity, confusion, and dry mouth. The second ingredient in the mixture was another deliriant, Hyoscyamus niger, also known as henbane, hog's bean, or insane root. It contained two alkaloids, hyoscyamine and hyoscine.

Bill Wilson, Founder of Alcoholics Anonymous was VERY Excited about the use of LSD in treating Alcoholism... Then he had Second Thoughts...

He started AA because of a Psychedelic Experience where he met GOD personally by taking Belladonna and Henbane on a five day guided Trip... He saw a Mystical White Light and was given the Fundamental Idea of AA...in 1935... Then 20 Years Later... He tried LSD and thought it would be really great if everyone met GOD personally...

In 1955, came to believe that LSD was a way to allow that meeting to happen... Many AA members were having trouble with the step where you needed to believe that a "Higher Power" could restore your Sanity. Especially members that did not believe in God... Bill felt that LSD could introduce people to a Higher Power DIRECTLY...

Sort of like having God's Phone Number, Dialing the Phone and Handing it to the AA member...

Then on second thought... Bill realized that the AA program was working just fine as it was and there was NO NEED TO FIX SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT BROKEN.

Then use of LSD became just another "Outside Issue" that AA had no opinion on... [Tradition 10]

One Great Idea at AA is You CHOOSE YOUR OWN GOD... OR... Lack of God... 

So Many Different Gods... and So Many Believers Loudly Proclaim that THEIR God is the One True God. That's Absurd! I, like 100% of the people on Earth HAVE NO CLUE if God is real or not.

Some people state that they know... but they are just deluding themselves... I don't mind them deluding themselves, but if they Kill people that are of different Religions... They are Crazy and Dangerous.  

Here is An Examination of My Beliefs... 

GOD = Group of Drunks

I do pray... I may not believe in God but what if God believes in me? I often send prayers for good health to the people who are sick. If God is Real, he reads my email... and the people who get the email feel better...

I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior in 1976. If Christianity turns out to be the correct Religion, I'm Saved! I was living with my first ex-wife and she was interested in me becoming a Baptist and I was interested in sex with her so... I went forward at a meeting, accepted Christ, joined the choir and then got bored with it all... we rarely attended. I did like Communion... It's a make believe Vampire, Cannibal Cult! Pretend to drink a persons BLOOD and Eat a persons BODY... OOOH! That's Creepy! But FUN!

However, I much later I did become addicted to crack cocaine and when I wanted to stop I went to a Baptist Church and gave my addiction to Jesus, and never smoked crack again. That evening I went to the Pink Floyd "concert" called "Welcome to the Machine" and that helped also because it gave me something to distract my attention while I was suffering thru the withdrawal symptoms. Another time I went to the Presbyterian Church founded by Annie Bidwell in Chico and prayed that God would find my friends a JOB... and later that week both Manuel and Victoria were employed. A miracle...  Not only that but if I ever stub my toe or hit my thumb with a hammer I shout out JESUS!

When I joined Alcoholics Anonymous I was introduced to the concept of a "Higher Power" helping me with my addiction. The "Higher Power" that worked for me was The "Group of Drunks" an acronym GOD... We were supposed to seek guidance thru prayer and meditation. However I always got Nothing from Prayer or Meditation. ZERO. The Group did help and I stopped drinking alcohol. Remember, Bill Wilson invented Alcoholics Anonymous while tripping on Belladonna and Henbane. Both POWERFUL Hallucinogens. He saw the "White Light" and had a vision of God. Me TOO! Me TOO! LSD, DMT, Peyote and Magic Mushrooms all give you a vision of God. I do like AA so Bill's Trip was a great help to mankind.

If the Hindus or Buddhists are right I'm set to reincarnate as a human or better because I've lead a good life. I have NOT killed any people but have eaten a few hamburgers... I love Bacon too... Oh Well... Maybe I'll come back as a Cow... and then a Hamburger myself...

If the Mormons are right, I'm not in luck. I liked meeting the Mormon people in Utah, they were very friendly and helpful but I just can't believe that God is an Extraterrestrial... Moroni from a star in the constellation Orion... Not very likely to be true.

However, maybe the "Ancient Alien" theorists are right. There sure is a lot of really strange evidence of Alien Visitation... For Example: Why did Mexicans, Cambodians and Egyptians all build Pyramids? What is their purpose? Did they have Alien Help?

If Islam is correct I'm screwed... But then, their Religion JUST SUCKS.

I have a few members of my family that are Jewish and I think that on Judgement day they will let me in. I've been nice to them and that's important in a world where some people put them in gas chambers and kill them.

Of COURSE, Gaia makes a lot of sense. I can really relate to the fact that all plants and animals are brothers and sisters... I really GROK this idea when I'm in a Redwood Forest. I lived on the edge of a second growth forest for 15 years and I "owned" a specific tree in Eureka. I sat on it daily and smoked cigarettes... I sat on it more often that anyone else so it's MY TREE and I'm It's Human. I will share that tree with our cat Meadow as she liked it too.

Then there are the Goddess Religions... Thankfully, I've met a couple of Goddesses and I sure am glad. One was nicknamed "Nature Nurse". She became my Second Ex-Wife.
Another was Ja-Kay R. from Chico. We played the drums in a band in Paradise, California  and performed "Miserlou" at the Farmers market in downtown Chico. A beautiful Blond Nordic Goddess.
Another was a GURU/Teacher named Sonya Sophia who lead a group healing seminar at the Utah Rainbow Gathering. I also bought admission to her weekly internet sessions where we studied "Tapping" a self-help Acupressure technique... I did that for about a year and learned as much as she could teach. "I Love and Accept Myself"

Rastafarians? Sure, I've smoked a lot of reefer... I can play reggae music... it's got ONE CHORD! Easy but I find it boring even when I'm stoned. Cannabis Psychosis is REAL. If you smoke every day you remain stoned even if you don't smoke... You stay stoned for about a month... and I saw things that were not there but I believed that they were... Difficult to take care of business when I'm THAT Stoned...

Pastafarians? - The Flying Spaghetti monster is a good joke.

The Church of the Subgenius? OK, another good joke.

I'm a registered Minister in the Universal Life Church. Why Not?

Scientology? No thanks, that "E-Meter" is BOGUS science and I know enough about electrical engineering to see that the great OZ is just a man behind a curtain... It's a GREAT religion for L. Ron Hubbard but not for any of the followers.

Timothy Leary and LSD? Ultimately it was disappointing and just an amusing ride... No more meaning than a good roller coaster...

Ram Dass? He took a lot of LSD and then went all the way to India to find a GURU... Then he learned to "BE HERE NOW" from a 6 foot 7 inch surfer from Laguna Beach. He could have saved a lot of time wasted on air travel if he had just gone surfing in California FIRST and Ignored the Indians... but he writes great books...

Ken Kesey and the Grateful Dead... Fun to dance to rock music on LSD. However it all has the creepy feeling that it was just an experiment in the CIA Project MKULTRA. What IF we dosed millions of people Nationwide? Would that be useful as a Weapon of War? Make the enemy too stoned to fight?

Surfing as a religion? Yes, that makes sense. Or to put it more simply, doing what you love to do as a way of life... Playing the ukulele or throwing pottery or oil painting or computer programming or dancing or bicycle riding or snow skiing or camping or taking photographs or ... etc etc etc... Yes there is a bliss when a person is doing something they love and are totally focused... TIME itself seems to pass more rapidly... I have experience this myself while programming graphic arts... Suddenly hours have passed while I was "in the zone".

A Christian fellow was giving a lecture at Humboldt State University one time and he said that there was only ONE WAY to go to Heaven, Jesus. He said that you couldn't find God by Mountain Climbing OR Drugs... What he forgot to mention was finding God by Mountain Climbing AND Drugs. BOTH! at the same time! It's not an either/or question... I have hiked to the top of El Capitan in Yosemite on LSD and I"m really glad I did...  He also said that Premarital Sex was a SIN. Like, BAD and you shouldn't do it. What an Idiot. I bet that attitude prevented him from getting laid.

Once I read a book called "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz and there was a lot of Toltec Wisdom there.

I've played the Father Drum with Native Americans and THAT was "Big Medicine"...

"The Temple of the Screaming Electron" and Digital Immortality. Ray Kurzweil plans to  upload your entire Brain to the Internet and Living forever in the cloud.  I'm working on that too with my Blog by typing almost every event in my entire life and every opinion I've ever held...

So, if you don't like your God simply FIRE him and Write your own Religion!

AA 12 Step Service... I remember Hauling 20 gallons of water to Cohasset, CA. (Near Chico) - I was the Man with the Van and my Friend's Tenant needed it.

The Entire Town of Cohasset burned in 2024 but the Newspapers report that all 400 people evacuated Safely... Now to be Homeless in Chico...

The tenant was an old lady in AA... The water was for drinking and bathing. and since I Could Do The Work... I Did... EASY!

We met through AA and I did the "Service" and felt happy to be able to serve.

I owned a Ford Windstar Cargo Van...

with a free mattress in the back. 

I became a Turtle with my home on my back... 

And I traveled from California thru Nevada to Utah...

Liz Merry - Report from Manton, CA

What a difference a day makes. 24 little hours. The Park Fire started in Chico’s Upper Park last Wednesday and raced north, gobbling up towns and 300,000 acres in just a few days. It’s now around 400,000.
I wrote last week’s column Thursday and had a vendor gig in McCloud on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday. I had planned on leaving home around noon, so submitted the column Friday morning. Then we looked at the fire’s progress and knew I wouldn”t be going to McCloud that day. By late morning, Mr. Standish and I thought it might be prudent to get some things out of Manton. We filled up the Lexus SUV with artwork, wine, and other beloved items, enjoying the luxury of not having to bolt out the door on a moment’s notice with only our Go Bag and doggies.
I delivered that carload to Mr. Standish’s brother Warren’s house west of Red Bluff and brought him back to Manton with me. Warren drove our ancient Subaru, now full of tools, saws, and other implements of destruction, back to his house. I packed the Lexus with all the stuff I needed to set up my booth in McCloud, figuring I would drive up Saturday. Mr. Standish had filled the F-350 and horse trailer with more stuff, making a nice space for Donny One Ball the donkey.
Within a couple of hours, the Evacuation Warning was upgraded to Order and an ominous wall of flame and smoke rapidly approached from the south. Holy cow! Suddenly we were flying around the house, gathering last minute items, filling a cooler with frozen food, not panicking. Then the power went out. Yay.
When everything was ready, we walked Donny over to the horse trailer and he flat out refused to load. No number of carrots and buckets of grain could entice him. He behaved like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a grocery store. Two sheriff’s deputies arrived in the driveway telling us to hurry up, so Donny got to stay home. We suspect he has invited the cattle next door over to party in our absence.
Driving down Manton Rd and Hwy 36 was a surreal experience. I have never seen a fire that huge, hot, and fast moving. I was a wildlands firefighter in my 20s and have lived through many fires in Manton, but I have never seen anything like this.
We got to Warren's with the truck, trailer, and Lexus just as night was falling and the view to the east was apocalyptic. People parked along the west side of the airport on Paskenta Rd, watching in awe and horror.
Swamper and Lucky, our doggies, consider this a huge adventure. Brand new smells and virgin things to pee on. They love their Uncle Warren and have taken to sleeping in his room - king of the castle and all.
As I type this Thursday, all homes in Manton are safe. The fire was stalled at the South Fork of Battle Creek, which is essentially across the street from our house on Hazen Rd. This victory was due to cooler temperatures, a shift in wind direction, terrain, humidity, and the relentless and brilliant work of fire crews and aircraft. We are very grateful.
Thanks to our wonderful Sheriff Kain and his department, we have been able to make quick trips home to check on Donny and the barn kitties. Manton folks on the Tehama side, (we are a joint town - in more ways than one,) can make appointments for short escorted visits to feed and water critters. Going up every other day has been working for us. Donny has been like, “Whaddup? Got any carrots?” Spoiled donkey.
The thunderstorms predicted for this weekend may keep us out of our homes for another couple of days, but we are turning to gratitude instead of frustration. We are safe. Our critters are safe. Our neighbors are safe. Our home is safe. Thank you to everyone who prayed, sent good thoughts, or communed with the Weather Gods or Universe.
North Valley Catholic Social Services has partnered with the California Fire Foundation to distribute Emergency Aid to people impacted by the fire. One $250 debit card per address can be obtained with proof of residency and ID. Call 530-247-3341 or drop by their office at 2400 Washington Ave in Redding. They are working to secure more funding, so following their page on Facebook is a good way to keep up with any new developments.
And speaking of funding, remember how the Adopted Budget allows the county to drain the reserves in order to fill the $18 million budget gap? And remember how Supervisors Candy Carlson and Pati Nolen strongly opposed the idea? “What if there’s a disaster? What will we do?” Supervisors Leach, Moule, and Hansen pshawed that and the budget was adopted. What could possibly happen? Now we know. The final version of the budget won’t be presented for a couple of months. Can’t wait to see what Chief Administrator Hydrick comes up with to make ends meet.
In non-fire related news, Louise Wilkinson’s restraining order hearing was postponed until this coming Monday at 10:30am. I think everyone is hopeful that a resolution can be found before a trial is warranted. That would be a big waste of time and money of which we have neither.
If the county was hoping to make an example of Wilkinson, mission accomplished. If they really consider an 82 year old woman to be a credible threat when our sheriff does not, that’s terribly sad. If they pursue the RO and double down on making it permanent, it will be clear they are trying to silence the criticism of a citizen who has been making the effort to be involved for over 20 years.
So we wait. To go home. For Wilkinson to be free to attend meetings again. For common sense. Fat chance of that.

Then I drove to Oregon and Washington State... where the van's transmission died... and then the engine caught fire... on Highway 5 near Centralia, Washington... I had to take Amtrak Home. The van got smashed at the junkyard recycling center in Vancouver Washington...
