Q: Why do Trump and MAGA hate common decency?
A: This is actually an excellent question, and it’s well worth thinking about the answer. Of course this is one of those loaded questions that assumes in advance the answer to a prior question, which is: “Do Trump and MAGA despise common decency?”, but the answer to that question is pretty manifestly YES, so the question that remains is: But Why?
In truth, I do not think that they despise common decency as such. Well, Trump might. But I suspect that for the majority of MAGA it’s not that they despise it, but that they feel justified in abandoning it.
Take the killing of Alex Pretti, for example. It’s rare to find any member of MAGA who is even so much as willing to admit that the death of a citizen, in the conduct of what they claim to believe is a lawful deportation operation, is a tragedy. Most of them are primarily concerned with justifying his killing, by attempting to establish that Pretti was a raving lunatic, and brought his death upon himself.
Why are they like this? Simply put, it’s because they’re fed up. Actually, they’re way, way beyond being fed up. They feel like the country doesn’t belong to them anymore, like they don’t recognize it, like liberal elites don’t like them, look down on them, ignore their needs and interests, and regard them as ignorant hicks.
They’re not wrong about any of this. And so in consequence they feel that the pieties and courtesies of polite civil society don’t apply to them, because they feel they’ve been banished from polite society, because they don’t care about its rules, and because they feel that abandoning those rules is justified by the way they’ve been mistreated.
But now, consider this. Consider that the reason why Alex Pretti and those like him are out in the streets angrily protesting is that they believe that Trump’s militarization of Blue Cities, first by deploying the National Guard and even the Marines, and now through the deployment of ICE, is a threat to our civil liberties, the normalization of which would lead to a Police State.
MAGA’s response to this is to say that the liberal/leftist recaction is hysterical and overblown, and that the protestors are just a bunch of spittle-spattering, holier-than-thou, raving agitators. (This description is assembled from real characterizations given to me by MAGA folks.)
So, in other words, MAGA’s rage is real and justified, while the left’s rage is fabricated/illegitimate. MAGA’s rage is the only rage that gets to count. So, the next question is: why do they seem so incapable of empathy?
Answer: The Presumption of Privilege. They regard themelves as the Real Americans, properly entitled to rule us all. If we do not defeat them now, they will rule the majority of us by force. As David Frum rightly pointed out almost a decade ago, “If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.” This is where we are.
