In 1973 the US Military Stopped Drafting People to Fight Pointless Wars... I Graduated from High School in 1972 and I was Forced to Register for the Draft But WAS NOT CALLED TO SERVE IN THE MILITARY... and Since Then Americans Have Never Been Drafted... an Idiotic Idea That Failed... NOW They Depend on Horrible Economic Conditions to get People to VOLUNTEER  as the Military is the Employer of Last Resort... 

A Brief History of the Vietnam War. 58,000 Americans Died for Nothing... During the 1950s Americans went into a Mad Panic about Communists taking over the world.

We built thousands of Nuclear Missiles and fallout shelters. The US Congress had witch hunts (Joe McCarthy-HUAC) to expose "Commies" who worked in The Hollywood Movie business and blacklisted folksingers that were leading our young people astray with Labor Union Organizing songs. During the height of this hysteria Vice President Richard Nixon went on Television and explained "the Domino Principle" while pointing to a map of Asia. His theory was that one by one those countries over there would turn Commie and soon they would take over Mexico and threaten the American Way of Life. President Eisenhower and Kennedy sent advisors to help the South Vietnamese soldiers fight the North Vietnamese soldiers. Then President Johnson sent even More American Soldiers to fight the Viet Cong. Then President Nixon continued the War for another 5 years before eventually he decided to allow the South Vietnamese to fight their own war and we left. Quickly the South lost and thousands of Boat People fled South Vietnam because they thought they would be killed. As it turned out, The Domino Principle was false. Communism did not take over the world. The entire war was a waste of lives and money.

The main reason we ended the Vietnam War was the huge protest movement against the war. Lead by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin of the Yippies, The Students for a Democratic Society and The Weatherman staged immense protest marches expressing the desire of the American People to end the war. Eventually the US government got the message.

For Example: Vietnam. After 10 years of fighting, we lost and then The Surrounding Countries DID NOT Fall like Dominos... Believe it or not, There was a "Domino Theory" proposed by Vice President Richard Nixon that Stated that, If we lost in Vietnam, the neighboring Countries would become Communist and then the Entire World would GO Commie and we will have Reds Ruling Mexico! And Attacking the USA! I'm not making this up... There were people that really believed this theory... and were willing to send other people's children to die because they were Fighting Communism. Danger Danger! If we don't beat the Reds in Vietnam they will come right up to our border... ABSURD! For those of you that have never heard of Dominos, it's a game with numbered tiles that you could stack in rows so that if you pushed one over, it would hit the next and that one would hit the next... and on and on and on... and they would all fall down. This was popular before Video Games. 

However, Hughes Aircraft, Dow Chemical and other Defense Contractors MADE A FORTUNE... People that sell Bandages, need Bleeding Soldiers to use them up... and then they make a Sale Restocking the Military. Helicopters, Agent Orange, Napalm, Boots, Boats and Food were all wonderful businesses to be in... Soldier Have to Eat... We can sell more MRE if there is an active war than during peacetime... To Quote Country Joe McDonald: "Come on Wall Street Don't Move Slow, Why Man this War's a Go-Go. There is Plenty Good Money to be Made, Supplying the Army with the Tools of the Trade! Just hope and Pray when they Drop the Bomb, They drop it on the Viet Cong..." Defense Contractors kept the war going for a long as possible. Nixon's Campaign Promise was to End the War but he kept it going an extra FOUR Years. If you think about it, We could have Won that War in ONE DAY. A Hydrogen Bomb on Hanoi would have Ended The War. Totally. We knew HOW to WIN since we we Dropped Atomic Bombs on Japan. BUT, we selected to Lose. 

One real effect of that war was: we got a LOT of immigrants. Vietnamese Boat People and Hmong... They came here by the Thousands... and then the Country of Vietnam became a Capitalist Manufacturing Country... Go Figure! They did not like being Commie after all. In general, the refugees were nice people and no one can imagine WHY we would go to war with them...

Everything I remember about Visiting Berkeley... 

Ecology became popular when I was growing up. I participated in the "Youth Walk for Survival" at UC Berkeley. It was a fundraising benefit for Ecology groups. We asked people to sponsor us for a few cents per mile walked. We started at the Football field on campus, walked around Lake Merritt in Oakland and then back to the football field. Then there was a concert and Malvina Reynolds sang "Boxes, little Boxes".  I also worked for the Sierra Club in the Action Clean Up project at the Little Kern River... We camped out for two months and picked up garbage, burnt it in a campfire and packed out the remaining waste to a big dumpster at the trail head. I got a fine Peace of Mind living in the woods with some other kids for a couple of months. One night I was walking in the moonlight near the trail head and a bear that was sleeping on the hood of a car jumped up and ran away... I'm sure glad that he ran away...

I remember Visiting Joe Franck at the US Navy Fraternity House on Frat Row Near UC Berkeley. Joe accepted a Two year scholarship to UC paid for by the Navy under the agreement that if he took all FOUR years he had to serve as a sailor.  However, If he only took TWO years he didn't have to do Nothing except for go on one boat ride in the summer. So Joe spent the last Two Years at UC Santa Cruz. His Frat House had a Volleyball Court on the roof and Many Chairs, Chaise Lounges and a Beverage Cart. We watched the Sun Set over the Golden Gate Bridge... EPIC... We also played soccer in the mud at a school field and I got some mud splashed into my eye and had to stop playing. No permanent Damage. 

Years Later I was walking across campus and I saw Peggy (Savannah) Franck in a Circle of People Singing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." 

My Father and I went to a Volleyball Game That my Niece Nicole was Competing in. It was Indoors, Loud Cheering and There were Beautiful Tall College Women Playing... Arguably, they were "The Crown of Creation."

Mom, Dad and I went to Band Day at the Cal Football Game. A Dozen Marching Bands from Cal & Other Colleges took the Field to Compete. We did not see that but they did all play together at Halftime. Not much marching because the Entire Field was Packed with Musicians, until they Marched Off the Field and Down The Street...  

My Wife, Victoria and I went to her doctor to have tests done on her hand when she was applying for Worker's Compensation. She had developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome due to a lifetime of Numerical Data Entry on a Computer at work. There were no Work Comp Certified Doctors in Eureka so... We drove to Berkeley and... Her Doctor Had Severe Medical Crisis of His Own and Was Rushed to the Hospital. And he never worked again. So, we took the rest of the Day off and wandered around Telegraph Avenue. Visiting Amoeba Music and Vic got her Palm Read by a Long Haired Young Man at a Table in front of a Mystical Gift Shop. I did not get my palm read nor did I find out What She Heard. That's Confidential... Private... We visited The Print Mint. A Historic Poster Shop where many of the Artists from the Sixties Had their work printed. And we had a Cup of Coffee in a Shop with a window that overlooked the Street and the Endless Parade of Dikes and Fairies, Freaks and Hairies, Tell Me Where Is Sanity? Not on Telegraph Avenue... That's for Sure...   

Once, in High School, We went to Buy Marijuana from a Dealer who lived One Half Block from Telegraph Avenue. We tried some and It was the most powerful I had ever smoked... But I purchased the Hashish instead... My friend was playing "The Wheel" on a Jews Harp... A Song by the Grateful Dead... 

I went to a Concert by Procol Harem with Robin Trower at Berkeley Community Center with Classmate Doug Stoner. Good Music. Especially "Conquistador."

My Father and I went to an Art Museum in Berkeley and I Enjoyed an Installation that was a very long wire stretched tightly, the"viewer" was asked to WHACK the wire with a stick and Enjoy the Sound as it Traveled from One End to the Other and Reflected Back.  It made a Singing Sound and The Note Varied because of the Wiggling of the Wire and The Doppler Effect. 

I rode the AMTRAK Train thru Berkeley... Did not Get off... and Rode BART Too... Had no Money so I Jumped the Turnstile to avoid Paying... 

After I retired, I was driving from the Central Valley to Eureka and went over The Altamont Pass, admired the forest of windmills and then Stopped at the Claremont Hotel in Oakland. No Parking unless you were a Guest, so I parked at a Shopping Center Nearby, drank a Cup of Starbucks Coffee and Drove UP Telegraph Avenue. The People looked Scary so I Did not Stop and walk around... I Dead Ended at the Gate Leading to Sprowl Plaza and Turned Left... Drove over that Bridge in the North Bay, Got on Highway #101 and Came Home...

This morning, U.S. Central Command posted on social media that three service members have been killed in action in Operation MAGA FAFO and five more are seriously wounded. It continued: “Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions—and are in the process of being returned to duty. Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing.”
Democratic leaders reacted to the news with comments like this one by Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA): “My thoughts are with the families of these servicemembers, and their loved ones. And I continue to pray for the safety of every servicemember and the recovery of those wounded in these operations. May God protect our troops.” Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz—the same man who invited Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg to the Signal chat about striking Yemen—suggested the soldiers’ sacrifice for the country was worthwhile, writing: “Freedom is never free.”
In a phone call with Peter Nicholas and Alexandra Marquez of NBC News, Trump said: “We expect casualties with something like this.” He added: “We have three, but we expect casualties, but in the end it’s going to be a great deal for the world.”
Later today, Trump told the American people: “As one nation we grieve for the true American patriots who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Even as we continue the righteous mission for which they gave their lives, we pray for the full recovery of the wounded and send our immense love and eternal gratitude to the families of the fallen. And sadly, there will likely be more before it ends. That's the way it is. Likely be more. But we’ll do everything possible where that won’t be the case. But America will avenge their deaths and deliver the most punishing blow to the terrorists who have waged war against, basically, civilization. They have waged war against civilization itself.”
Trump was hosting a fund raiser at Mar-a-Lago on Friday, as the U.S. offensive began. The New York Times reported last November that tickets for the dinner dance were $1 million apiece. The optics of Trump partying with his rich cronies while American soldiers died is at least partly what is behind the fact that today, “#SendBarron” trended on social media.
Strikes continued today in the Middle East as Israel and the U.S. hit Iran and Iran retaliated against Israel and U.S. bases in the region. Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon joined the fight by sending missiles into Israel. Israel responded with an attack on the suburbs of Beirut. Oil prices jumped sharply as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz at the outlet of the Persian Gulf, through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes, dropped almost to a halt.
After yesterday’s euphoria coming from the administration following the first strikes against Iran, today revealed that the administration had not given much thought to whether the strikes were legitimate or what would happen after them. Administration officials did not appear on the Sunday talk shows, relying instead on congressional surrogates. Brian Stelter and Kit Maher reported that journalists have been working around the White House press office, calling Trump directly, and he has been willing to talk.
Trump told NBC News reporters Nicholas and Marquez that he launched the strikes because “They weren’t willing to stop their nuclear research. They weren’t willing to say they will not have a nuclear weapon.” When asked if he would stop the strikes and negotiate, he said: “I don’t know,” but said he would consider it “if they can satisfy us,” adding that “they haven’t been able to.”
Natasha Bertrand, Zachary Cohen, and Jennifer Hansler of CNN reported this evening that briefers from the Pentagon today told congressional staff that Iran had not been planning to attack U.S. forces or bases in the Middle East unless Israel attacked first. Trump administration officials said on Saturday that Iran was planning to strike the U.S. preemptively and thus posed an imminent threat. The briefers said there was no intelligence to support that claim.
Trump seems unclear about the end game of the conflict he has started.
When NBC News reporters Nicholas and Marquez asked him what he hoped to accomplish through the military operation, he said: “There are many outcomes that are good. Number one is decapitating them, getting rid of their whole group of killers and thugs. And there are many, many outcomes. We could do the short version or the longer version.”
He told Michael Scherer of The Atlantic that Iran’s new leadership wants to talk with him and that he will do so, suggesting that he was not, in fact, interested in regime change. “They should have done it sooner, Michael. They could have made a deal. They should’ve done it sooner. They played too cute,” Trump said. But then Trump told Scherer he had confidence that the Iranian people would launch an uprising against the Iranian government.
Kristen Welker of Meet the Press this morning quoted Trump’s statement of yesterday saying “Hopefully, [Iranian troops] and Police will peacefully merge with the Iranian Patriots, and work together as a unit to bring back the Country to the Greatness it deserves.”
Then Welker asked her guest, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), “Is ‘hope’ the plan for the future of Iran?” Graham said: “No, the future of Iran is going to be determined by the Iranian people. The new Iran, whatever it is…our goal is to make sure it cannot become again the largest state sponsor of terrorism.” Welker responded: “But is there a plan to make sure that happens…does the president have a plan to guarantee that that happens?” Graham responded with some heat: “No. It’s not his job or my job to do this.”
Apparently, U.S. officials simply hoped the Iranian people would seize the government if their leaders were killed in airstrikes. But there was a line of succession, and the country’s police state remains in place. Erin Banco of Reuters reported yesterday that before the attacks, analysts for the Central Intelligence Agency assessed that if Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were killed, younger hard-line men could replace him.
Trump told Zolan Kanno-Youngs, David E. Sanger, and Tyler Pager of the New York Times that he intends to keep bombing Iran for “four to five weeks” if necessary. He spoke repeatedly of an outcome like that of Venezuela, in which the U.S. removed the top leader but left the rest of the government intact. Trump told the reporters he hoped Iran’s military forces would turn over their weapons to the Iranian people. “They would really surrender to the people, if you think about it,” he said.
The New York Times reporters note that the security forces he says should surrender to the people were the ones that killed thousands of protesters in January. Trump refused to say that the administration would defend the Iranian people if they did rise up.
ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl spoke to Trump tonight and posted: “Pres Trump told me tonight the US had identified possible candidates to take over Iran, but they were killed in the initial attack. ‘The attack was so successful it knocked out most of the candidates,’ Trump told me. ‘It's not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead. Second or third place is dead.’”
In the midst of today’s military operation and all his calls with reporters, Trump took to social media to repost more than 40 social media posts with over-the-top praise for his State of the Union address. The posts appeared to be curated, suggesting that someone is feeding him praise.
National security scholar Tom Nichols posted on social media: “People predicting disaster: The odds are in your favor, but you cannot be sure, and you should not hope to be right. People celebrating: Maybe wanna wait a bit. The odds, historically, are definitely not on your side. Anyone certain they know what happens next is making it up.”

THE CHATEAU LIBERTE was a legendary rock & roll bar in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Many bands from the Bay Area played there including Hot Tuna and members of Moby Grape. The cover of the first Doobie Brothers album was photographed in the bar and the Doobie's were regulars here before they hit it big with Bruce Cohn.
Tower of Power played outdoors on a stage in the Redwood trees in 1972 with Blue Mountain. Rumor was that 300 tickets were sold and well over 3,000 people showed up. Cars were parallel parked on Highway 17.
The Gypsy Jokers and Hells Angels hung out at The Chateau Liberte. The bikers also worked there. This helped feed rumors of a "biker city" or "biker camp" in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Manager Bruce Cohn remembers taking guns and knives away from the clientele as they passed through the portals, after they paid $2 admission.
The all-wood building on stilts was originally built in 1865 and was a notorious speakeasy during Prohibition, but burned to the ground during the seventies.
