"You do not have evidence to support the baseless and MAGA-motivated conspiracies about my father because there isn't any," Hunter Biden said... Asked how the hearing had gone as he left the building, Hunter Biden replied, "Great." Republicans, who narrowly control the House, are pushing ahead with their impeachment inquiry even after a person who provided accusations at the heart of their case was charged with lying to the FBI.
House Republicans’ long-running effort to impeach Joe Biden was rocked by news of the arrest of a former FBI informant whose claims about Hunter Biden’s business with a Ukrainian gas firm were a key part of the GOP’s case against the president. Alexander Smirnov is accused of lying to the government, and yesterday, prosecutors revealed that he said he received information from Russian intelligence.

I've posted before about "dingbat" apartment buildings. The one I've been living in for the last 13 years isn't technically a dingbat, but it was built in that same era (early 1960's) using the same flimsy materials as dingbats. As a result, there is constant, never-ending noise, and I can't always tell where it's coming from because of the weird way in which sound travels through these thin walls. I'm on the top floor, so there is no one above me...but when it's the people next door or the people below me, it often sounds as if they're right here in my apartment with me. That's how loud it is. But when it's NOT the people next door or below, it's a mystery where the sound originates from. Today, as I try to sleep off my rebound case of Covid, there is a constant "boom boom boom" coming from somewhere within the building. The "boom boom boom" happens day and night, not continuously, but I'm often awakened in the middle of the night by "boom boom boom" (almost always in threes). It has been really consistent since Labor Day, but sometimes I might go months without hearing it.
I'm convinced that part of the reason I can't shake this Covid is because I can't get any decent rest due to the constant "boom boom boom." If they would just STOP, whoever and wherever they are, I feel like I'd sleep really well. But the boom-boom-boom never stops, not during the day, not during the night, never. So I never really sleep.
I don't recommend dingbat living. I've lived in several actual dingbats in the past. In one, I jokingly called my upstairs neighbor "the mad cougher" because he would cough, and it sounded like he was right there in the room with me. I can remember waking up in the night and worrying that someone was inside my apartment, but then it turned out it was only the mad cougher upstairs. Another dingbat had what I affectionately called "the daily revving of the V-8 engines." But the worst of all is the leaf blowers. Every dingbat has the high-pitched screech of leaf blowers penetrating the paper-thin walls.
I am so done with dingbat living.

I think if I chose one thing to stand for, it would be woman's rights. On both the micro and macrocosm the abuse of women creates most, if not all of our social problems.
If a woman is abused or shown disrespect either in her home or in society, that resonants and reverberates. Her children are exposed to that abuse. Boys learn to abuse and disrespect women. Girls learn that they must submit to the will of the men around them, or suffer the consequences.
We see this power over scenerio playing out with the rape, murder, and disappearance indigenous women around the world. They are the voiceless, the disregarded, the trafficked.
We see it play out with women of color. Women who have had to stand strong as everything they value was ripped away. Leaving an entire culture, an entire race of people left living in poverty, in self perpetuating cycles of abuse on every level.
We see the abuse extend to women who are trafficked or forced by poverty or addiction into the sex trade. Sex workers, who are used and abused for the gratification of men. Then demeaned, devalued, and discarded by a male dominated society. As if somehow those used are of less value than those who abuse.
We see the abuse of women condoned by religion. Religion that strips away their rights placing the rights of men above a women's right to safety, to medical care, and to basic resources. We see this in Iran, but also in America with regard to reproductive rights. Man made religions govern the rights of women all across the globe.
I believe that the devaluing and subjugation of women creates a society of greed. It creates a society that values the rights of those with power over the rights of those without. It creates a world where half of the population, the half that carries and brings new life into this world, is abused, disrespected, and subjugated by the other half.
Until that imbalance is corrected how can we create balance. And it begins at home. It begins with you. How are you treating the women in your life? How are you treating the mother of your children? Your mothers, sisters, and lovers?
Men how are you rising or falling? I see a culture that views women as disposable. When you are finished with one it is discarded and another woman takes her place. Men are you teaching your children respect by mirroring respect?
Women are you standing with your sisters? Helping when you can? Are you allowing yourselves to be part of the recycle and reuse fast food culture? Do you see your own value?
We see the earth as mother. Yet the same greed that uses and abuses extends to her, our beloved earth mother.
Yes if I were to pick one thing to rally for, to stand for, it would be women!!!

Studies have also found that more Republicans than Democrats have died from COVID-19. According to a study, excess death rates in Florida and Ohio were 76% higher among registered Republicans than Democrats from March 2020 to December 2021.
Covid death rates are higher among Republicans than Democrats, mounting evidence shows. Lower vaccination rates among Republicans could explain the partisan gap, but some researchers say mask use and social distancing were bigger factors.

My Gen X friends probably remember the Cold War. In the 80's, there were several movies having to do with nuclear war, and the fallout from a nuclear explosion. There was a TV movie from 1983 called The Day After. It was about what life would be like the day after a nuclear explosion. Fortunately, the Cold War ended and we never did have to deal with nuclear war, but it was a genuine fear at the time.
Anyway, my point is, the sky outside today reminds me of that movie, The Day After. Here is a picture from the movie, plus a picture I took just now of the view outside my window. In the Day After, there was nuclear fallout falling from the sky. In today's reality, there is ash falling from the sky.

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond - and his response is magnificent:
“Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta:
I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I don’t make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana.
What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.
Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend you’re Count Dracula.
Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you don’t do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But don’t tell anybody what you’re doing. Don’t show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK?
Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash receptacles. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about what’s inside you, and you have made your soul grow.
We came from Florida to California in 1961. My father was an aerospace engineer and was working in Woodland Hills and we stayed in a motel until we could find a house to buy. We ended up in Newbury Park, in the housing trac called Casa Conejo. It was right off Borchard Road. My parents bought a four bedroom two bath home with a double car garage for $19,000. We had to wait for it to be constructed and the day we moved in, I remember other houses and moving vans in front of other houses and everybody was moving in the same weekend. Everybody had a brand new house. I have no idea what that house is valued at now. We left in 1969. The first elementary school that I went to was Walnut. Then they built Manzanita and we all were transferred over to that elementary school. And then they built Redwood junior high school and we were transferred there. And then Newbury Park high school was built and everybody went there. It was amazing to see such growth in a little community. One of these old RV type vehicle was used, to come to the supermarket on Thursdays. It was the bookmobile. We didn’t have a library in our little area so the bookmobile used to come in and we used to pile up books in our bicycles and take them home and read them. I remember when Mountain Dew was introduced. I was living in that neighborhood and there was a big hoopla at the supermarket with loud music and they were giving away samples of Mountain Dew. Cans of soda were five cents each. Boy, those were the days.
GS REPLIED:
Such nice Newbury Park nostalgia. We had a similar experience in Santa Clara Valley in the 1950s, including all the new school construction to accommodate the rapidly growing suburbs.
I moved to the Conejo Valley about the time you left. It was still the boonies and nobody knew where T.O or Newbury Park were. Some knew about the old Stagecoach Inn in your area, and about Jungleland in ours. But that was about it!

Reaganomics Destroyed the American Dream
"The Republican project is a matter of getting turkeys to vote for Christmas by doing a lot of culture war bullshit, cruelly abusing disfavored sexual and racial minorities. This wins support from low-information voters who’ll vote against their class interests and support more monopolies, more tax cuts for the rich, and more cuts to the services they rely on."--Cory Doctorow
“Moms for Liberty” is an ironic choice of a name for a hate group that wants to take away liberty and freedom from everyone else and micromanage every aspect of everyone else’s private lives, including private relationships (dictate who you can or can’t marry or even what behavior is allowed behind closed doors), private medical choices (reproductive choices such as abortion or contraception, medical or recreational marijuana, end of life choices, stem cell therapies, gender-identity care), tell us what books we or our children can have access to, or try to force PRIVATE religion into PUBLIC policy and religious rituals into public meetings or subsidize it with special tax advantages (socialized religion). Better names for these Females for Fascism: Crackpots with crockpots Ku Klux Karens Klanned Karenhood Minivan Taliban Book ban Barbies A “Moms for Liberty” book club would operate more like a campfire. Additional suggestions for better names for these Femme Fascists? You can’t spell HATRED without RED HAT. The want to fight the “WOKE” … but being WOKE (alert, awake) is so much better than its opposite: being COMATOSE.
Here's a frustrating thing: a friend posts on Facebook, and I post a comment in which I ask a question, and my friend 'likes' my comment, but doesn't answer my question. Usually the question isn't that important, but it's still a question, so I'm hoping for an answer. When someone 'likes' a comment, that acknowledges that they've read the comment, so they must realize it's a question. If someone doesn't want to answer a question, that's their choice...but why 'like' the comment, then? It's like saying, "I acknowledge the fact that you're asking me a question, but I'm not going to answer it." I know it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, but it's still kind of insulting knowing that someone read your comment, but has chosen not to answer your question.
In regards to the question thing, for example: someone posts a picture of some food that they made, and it looks really good to me, so I might say, “Would you mind sharing the recipe?” That’s a question! The person “likes” my question, but does not share the recipe and does not comment further. So I’m left wondering why they acknowledged my question but didn’t answer it.
Another example: someone posts a photo of something they bought, and I think I may have seen the same item at Macy’s (as an example). So I comment, “I think I saw that at Macy’s! Is that where you got it?” They “like” my question, but never answer it. It’s a simple yes or no question.
Another example: someone posts a photo of their newly-landscaped yard, and I ask, “Is that a lemon tree?” They “like” my question, but don’t answer it.
None of these questions seem like a huge deal, but I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t genuinely want to know the answer. So getting nothing but a “like” in response to my question is extremely frustrating, and even seems a little rude. If anyone ever asks ME a question, I will give them an answer, even if the answer is “I’m not sure.” I feel that If someone asks me a question, it would be rude of me not to answer it. And it would be even more rude to “like” the question without offering an answer.
and CW Answered:
Alas, I fear you're making the same mistake I often make, in applying the expectations of educated, civil conversation to the screeching echo-chamber that is The Interweb..
but SK Cleared it all up:
Sometimes I want to get back to my keyboard to answer because typing it out on my phone is a pain in the ass. I’ve found if I don’t at least “like” to acknowledge I’ve read the question many will either DM it or ask again.
