So We went to Yosemite and Camped at the Overflow Campground. One Morning Bright and Early we Dropped Acid and Hiked to the Top of the Mountain... One Effect of LSD is it Gives You a LOT of Energy to Do Hiking or Dancing... It's a Powerful Stimulant so We Had NO TROUBLE Walking the 2700 Foot Change in Elevation...

Then we Rode the Double Decker Bus Around the Park to the Mist Trail. We Sat on the Top Layer of the Bus... It Had No Ceiling... Truly one of the Most Fabulous Adventures POSSIBLE... Outdoors on a Magic Carpet Looking Up at Half Dome...

Then We Hiked to Vernal Falls...

It appeared to Be a Living Multi Eyed Creature... and when I Looked Away, The Mountains Appeared to be Flowing UP... I'm Still Amused by this Visual Effect... For Example if I Read The Scrolling Letters on the Bottom of CNN TV News Show... and Then I Look Away... Whatever I see Appears to Be Moving Left to Right... Try IT!

The Next Night We were Sitting Around a Campfire Singing Songs and Smoking Marijuana and a Park Ranger Ran out of the Darkness and Arrested ME... He said I'm Gonna Charge You with "Disturbing the Peace" but You Have to Leave the Park Tomorrow... or I'll Change the Charge to "Possession of Marijuana" SO... We Left... and I Paid a $35 Dollar Fine... I'm Sure Glad the Ranger Didn't Attack Me When I was High on LSD... That Would Have Been a BUMMER!

In Fact HE WAS DISTURBING THE PEACE... I was Playing the Harmonica and Smoking Marijuana... PRETTY DAMN PEACEFUL ACTIVITIES! But he was a Freaking PIG! Oink Oink!

Since We Had Such a Great Time In Yosemite...

The Next Year for Pioneer Week We Went Camping at Hetch Hetchy Reservoir... a MUCH More Private Campground since almost No One Goes There... and It's Just a Fabulous... with Giant Granite Rocks Everywhere... We Took a Marijuana, LSD and Peyote Trip and This time We Just Made Our Own Trail... Since we were above Treeline, Just Wandering Around in the Mountains was Easy... and Privacy WAS Important Because We Didn't Want to Meet any Rangers!

On that Day We All Climbed up a "Chimney" in the Granite Rock... a Place where the Rock has Split apart and The Mountain Climber Puts one Foot on One Side and The Other Foot on the Other Side and Just Behaves Like Spiderman!

Later That Day I Accidentally Slipped into The River... I was Walking Along the Edge watching the Water Bubble UP in a Large Pool... Quite Pretty! That Swim Could Have been Fatal as I was Upstream from a Giant Waterfall... However, as Luck would Have It, I Was Washed to a Place where I Could Climb Out...

A Total Gift From God... I Was Totally Out of Control and The Current of the River Made All Survival Choices For Me... When I Was At The Bottom of The Pool, I Relaxed and Accepted Death... and Then I Was Spared!

I also took a trip at an Anti-War protest march at the White House - I was interviewed on TV as one of those Man on the Street Shots - ranting and raving about the war... and then we Marched over to the Lincoln Memorial and were Faced with a CHOICE - stay in the Street and get arrested when the parade permit expired - and Make a BIG DEAL out of the Whole Thing or... stand on the Sidewalk and go about our business... I Chose to NOT Get Arrested with Daniel Ellsberg and a Hundred other people... who sat down in the street... That Trip was like an Abbie Hoffman Reenactment! Mt. Shasta Lore:
Indigenous people from Northern California and Southern Oregon are primarily the Pit River Indians, Modocs, Wintu, Karuk, Hupa, Shasta and Yurok tribes.

Mt. Shasta’s peak has been used as a spiritual and geographical locator. At 14,179 ft. elevation and an active volcano, Mt. Shasta towers above all other surrounding mountains. Native people do not reside on Mt. Shasta because it is considered so powerful. Spiritual ceremony is conducted in areas below the timberline and when finished, the surroundings are returned to nature, with nothing left behind. Medicine men and shamans are often taken to Mt. Shasta for training. There is much Native lore telling how the mountain has healed through prayer, songs, dancing, doctoring and through nature. The mountain yields a sacred spring and areas for collecting plants and herbs for ceremony and healing. The mountain is called ‘grandfather’ as it represents the paternal grandparents of the Pit River Tribe. Their powerful spirit called Mis Misa is said to live inside the mountain and serves to keep the universe in balance. They consider Mt. Shasta the beginning of all life and the end of all life, where one can ascend into the sky along the Milky Way to the beyond.

The Native peoples report many tunnels within Mt. Shasta. The Wintu say the mountain generates sound that provides information and guidance. The Wintu lore says another realm exists inside the mountain and access might come through doorways, such as vents in caves. Mt. Shasta must be approached with great care and respect as it is guarded by certain spirits. Mt. Shasta is so powerful that only short visits are appropriate. It is said that “It has it all”. During ceremony, the Wintu frequently hear and know the presence of the “little people”, called the Mountain Boys, who live deep within the mountain. A shaman can communicate with the little people. The shaman also uses the bubbling brook on the mountain to gain spiritual information.

When visiting the mountain, silence is important for meditation and fasting. The mountain spirits command respect.

METAPHYSICAL LORE

As early as the 1880s, writers began their association of the lost continent of Lemuria with Mt. Shasta. Even though these theories cannot be proved, the power of the mountain remains supreme. People worldwide visit Mt. Shasta to be close to its spiritual energy, to meditate, to communicate with the spirit world and to be healed. The concept of Lemurians living within the mountain has become widely popular and anyone visiting Mt. Shasta will be amazed by the abundance of literature on the topic as well as practitioners working within the vortex of an important spiritual community.

Native American stories.

"The Native Americans have always felt that the mountain was the sacred center of the universe," Ashalyn says. "They even have stories that talk about it being the home of the creator."

Mount Shasta straddles the territories of the Shasta, Wintu, Achumawi, Atsugewi and Modoc tribes. Not surprisingly, the imposing mountain shows up in a lot of tribal myths and stories. It's especially important to the Wintu tribe, who trace their people's origin back to a sacred spring on the mountain.

"They have always done their sacred ceremonies there, and they continue to do them to this day," says Ashalyn. "Every August they do their ceremonies for just the tribe and their invited guests."

Then there are the "ascended masters." In the 1930s, a businessman named Guy Ballard was hiking on the mountainside when he encountered a mysterious figure, who claimed to be an "ascended master."

"Those are beings who have had many lifetimes on this planet," explains Ashalyn, "and no longer need to come back to that birth-death cycle that we're in, because they've learned to master the physical plane."

As Ballard would later write, this particular ascended master passed on his teachings and took him on a cosmic journey through space and time.

Ballard, along with his wife, Edna, soon started a religious movement called the "I AM Activity" — a mix of Christianity, theosophy and fierce nationalism (Ballard claimed to be George Washington reincarnated, and said that America was spiritually superior among nations). At the height of its popularity, the I AM Activity had about a million followers. They were eventually charged by the U.S. government for swindling their followers out of millions of dollars, and the group fell into obscurity.

Finally, there's the legend of Telos.

According to Ashalyn, Telos is a crystal city inside the mountain, inhabited by higher-dimensional beings called Lemurians.

"That goes all the way back to the ancient continent of Lemuria that was in the North Pacific Ocean many thousands of years ago," she says. "It actually was inhabited before Atlantis was inhabited."

As the story goes, Lemuria and Atlantis got into a thermonuclear war and sank their continents. The Lemurians fled into Mount Shasta, and that's where they've remained ever since. Mostly.

What Turns People Into Spiritual Virtuosos?
"Well, there's a couple stories from the 1940s where the Lemurians were actually seen walking into town," says Ashalyn. They were 7 feet tall, dressed in long white robes and sandals. They went to the general store to buy supplies, and paid for their purchases with chunks of gold. "The shopkeeper would take the gold, turn around and try to give them change, and the Lemurian would be gone."

These days, no one reports eyewitness accounts of Lemurians in the flesh — but some locals believe the smooth, saucer-shaped lenticular clouds that often gather at the summit of Mount Shasta are engineered by the Lemurians to camouflage alien cargo ships docking at Telos.

Red Terry is a 61-year-old Virginia mountain woman who since April 2 has been living in a tree inside the white-and-blue-taped corridor marked out for the interstate Mountain Valley Pipeline. She and her 30-year-old daughter Minor, who is stationed in another tree not far away, are defending their land against what they see as a looming environmental catastrophe.

To get to Red’s tree sit, you’ve got to cross wooden boards that cross Bottom Creek numerous times. Water flows all around you, supporting wetland vegetation like skunk cabbage across the property, where the Terry family has lived for seven generations.

A judge ruled on Jan. 31, however, that the company may use eminent domain to take land along the pipeline’s 303-mile route from northern West Virginia to southern Virginia. After Red took to the trees, Roanoke County blocked supporters from giving her supplies, and it provided law enforcement officers to supplement MVP’s security guards. The first person I saw at the camp, in fact, was a camouflage-clad guard whose path through the woods helped me figure out where the bridges were.

What I've been doing since 1972. by Greg Vanderlaan - the Chico Years

After high school I went to Chico, California to attend college. My major was biology and I found out that I had no interest in studying that subject or ANY subject... I spent a lot of time smoking marijuana, drinking and playing music with my friends. After two years I flunked out. However, I did get to experience swimming in Upper Bidwell Park where the Black Lava Flows from Mount Lassen are. I really enjoyed swimming at One Mile Pool, Day or Night. Not many Parks are open all night long but Bidwell is so long and thin that a fence is impractical. Plus, a fence is, like, totally rude! I remember riding my bicycle everywhere. I also got to go on a Bus Ride with a many other students to go hear The Grateful Dead in Reno. My friend Jimmy played his guitar and I played the Harmonica while everyone else sang along... Then we stayed at a cabin on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe and the next day I ate some LSD and went to hear the legendary "Wall of Sound" at the University of Nevada football field. The Dead had a lot of trouble making that absurdly large public address system work but... we all had fun anyway... Especially playing slot machines after the show and driving down that street where they have giant sculptures of Showgirls.

In the springtime Chico State has a week long celebration called "Pioneer Days". My friends and I decided that the last place we wanted to be was in town when it was invaded by drunken strangers. We went camping at Yosemite, took LSD and climbed the trail to the top of Yosemite Falls. The higher we got in elevation the Higher We Got... By the time we arrived on top of the mountain it appeared to be moving wildly... as if the granite was dancing. I lay down on my belly and crawled to the edge... That's a great view but really dangerous because it's a tall cliff with no guard rail. We walked down to the valley floor and rode the double-decker bus around... sitting on the top, with no roof... bliss... we also walked to the base of Vernal Falls on the mist trail. I looked at my arm and it looked like a bear, with claws... I went fishing in the river and slapped a fish out onto the shore... just like a bear would. That evening we were playing guitars and my harmonica around the campfire when a ranger ran out of the darkness and tackled me... We were passing around a joint and I was holding it. He gave me a ticket for "Disturbing the Peace" and told us that we had to leave the park the next day or he'd change the charge to possession... In my humble opinion, The Ranger was the one "disturbing the peace" by tackling me...

The next Year we took a camping trip to Hetch-Hetchy reservoir. Another beautiful granite mountain near Yosemite. We took LSD and went free-climbing up a chimney and then hiked around above the tree line. I went down to the edge of the river to admire the bubbling water and accidentally slipped in. Could have died as there was a large waterfall downstream. The water out powered me and took me to the bottom of the pool. I gave up, accepted death and bubbled up to a place on the far shore where I climbed out. A cosmic near death experience... Hey Kids, Don't Do This!

I lived in Chico in 1973 and 1974 and then for a few years in the late 1990s early 2000s. I Joined AA and quit drinking Alcohol. Chico has a big active AA community. Going to meetings at Campfire Council Ring behind Caper Acres, Bidwell Park is an experience I will always treasure. I spent one summer "Rent Free" camping outdoors at Picnic Area 37 in the grove of 13 Redwood Trees.

Arteries, Veins, Trees and Rivers have the same shape. Because We are all brothers and sisters with plants, animals and the eARTh itself.

Buddhists say we are responsible for protecting life. All Life. The Forest, The Animals and Other People... Take Action to help our Brothers and Sisters. Even Mountains are Sacred.
