Mourning the passing of former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Delaine Eastin. I had the privilege of running alongside Delaine on the campaign trail in 2018 when she was running for governor. She embraced my campaign and supported it with great enthusiasm. I will forever be grateful for her advice and friendship.

Delaine was a model for how to lead as a public servant. She paved the way for more women to run for office and serve in leadership roles, and she was incredibly generous with her time and energy — uplifting me and others even during her own campaigns.

I loved watching Delaine deliver passionate speeches about her efforts to ensure our education system provided students with the necessary support and tools for success in the classroom. She was a fierce advocate for school food programs, ensuring our kids had the nutrition they needed. Delaine also fought for smaller class sizes and advocated for inclusive policies, pushing for our schools to provide essential resources to students with disabilities. Her work directly improved the educational experiences of countless students in California, and will reverberate for generations to come.

I’m sending love and support to Delaine’s family and friends. Let us honor her legacy by continuing to advocate for the causes she cared about so deeply. Rest in power, Delaine.

There used to be a world famous violinist named Yehudi Menuhin, and at one point in time, he lived in Los Gatos. He spent a lot of time on tour, and he would ship his own personal Steinway piano all over the world to be played by his accompanist in his concerts. After the tour, the piano would be shipped back to Los Gatos. He had the phone number which was later acquired by my family in the 1960's, before my time. My dad said that every once in a while, someone would call and ask, "Where do you want us to deliver the piano?"

To this day, my parents still have that same phone number.

As a child my family climbed the Cinder Cone. It's a pile of volcanic ash. It was difficult to climb as we slid down while walking up. "Two steps forward one step back." The whole family went. Uncle Marc and Aunt Peg, Cousins Robin and Jill.

We camped at the Lake and went to a campfire talk by Park Rangers. They told the story of the Indians of Lassen and the History of the Volcano exploding. Lava flowed as far away as Chico. The volcano once was a giant mountain in prehistoric times... They showed illustrations of how big it was in comparison to the seemingly tiny mountain that remains...

The highlight of my trip to Lassen was the Bubbling Mudpots of Bumpass Hell. It's a valley of hot springs that is bright orange and yellow. Extremely hot sulfur vents out of the volcano making lakes of hot bubbling mud. It was named for an early explorer, Mr Bumpass, who fell into a mudpot and died from the heat. There are sulfur springs right on the road but the best ones are an easy one mile hike away from the parking lot. The rangers built wooden boardwalks for tourists to go out over the mudpots safely.

In the 1990s I went to The end of the road at Mount Lassen with some friends from AA. That's where people park when they want to climb the mountain. We walked around and looked at the view but did not climb the mountain. I took out my guitar and sang the song "Truckin'" to the hikers... It's special to sing at High Altitudes.
