Organized by SF Interfaith Council, SF Night Ministry, Faithful Fools, SF Coalition on Homelessness, and ABD/Skywatchers, this memorial vigil is held every year on or near the Winter Solstice to honor the memories of our neighbors and friends who have died on the streets of San Francisco that year. We gather at Civic Center Plaza across from City Hall, have a singing processional, and return for a vigil in the plaza. In silence, in prayer, in song we remember them, honor them, mourn our loss, reach out to each other for comfort and hope, and nourish our solidarity in working for change.

I get really sick and tired of people bashing California and saying things that aren't true. Yes, it's extremely expensive to live here, and yes, there are a lot of homeless people here, and yes, that's a bad thing. But it's NOT TRUE that our streets and sidewalks are covered with human waste. I realize that homeless people living in encampments don't usually have access to a proper bathroom, so they have to go somewhere, and that's not good. But they're not just using the streets and sidewalks everywhere. That is ridiculous, and it's a lie being perpetuated by right-wing media...but other people are hearing that lie and repeating it as if it's the truth, but it's not. If you listen to right-wing media, they'll lead you to believe that the streets of San Francisco are covered with feces and syringes and that there's tons of crime everywhere, like some kind of war zone or something. But every time I go to San Francisco, it looks exactly the same as it always has. I've never seen human waste anywhere on the streets or sidewalks of San Francisco or San Jose. I'm not denying that it's probably there somewhere, probably in areas with the biggest homeless encampments. But unless you're walking through an encampment, you're not going to see that. San Francisco is a beautiful, vibrant city with a lot of energy and a lot of interesting things to see and do. It's not some filthy war zone, and it gets really tiring having to explain that to people who blindly believe everything they hear on Fox news.
From what I've been told by multiple different people, homelessness is a problem in big cities all over the US right now. The right-wing media loves to focus on San Francisco, and they love to say that it's only cities run by Democrats that have homelessness. But from my understanding, this is absolutely not true. Big cities all over the country are dealing with homelessness, and it has nothing to do with whether or not the city is run by Democrats. Again, this is a right-wing LIE.
The only thing wrong with California is overcrowding. This is due to too many people wanting to live here, and we just don't have room for so many people, so the cost of living keeps going up and the homeless population continues to grow. Many people think the solution to this is building more housing. I have mixed feelings about that, because they ARE building housing on every available piece of land, and yet the cost of housing continues to go up. Every new high-density apartment building is more expensive than the last. So basically, what they're doing is building housing that only the wealthy can afford. If they would actually build housing which is affordable to lower-income people, then maybe I'd agree that it's a good thing. But endless luxury housing is not helping the situation.
Bottom line: people want to be here. They can't build housing fast enough to keep up with demand, and it doesn't matter how expensive the new housing is, people always pay whatever it costs because that's how badly they want to be here. Do you think people would be willing to pay $5000 a month for an apartment if the streets were really littered with human waste and syringes? If that were true, CA would be a barren wasteland of empty apartments because nobody would want to live in such a filthy place. But it's NOT filthy. It's beautiful and desirable, and that's why people are willing to pay so much to live here. Don't believe the right-wing LIES.

Many of the people that are talking about leaving California are MAGA Morons... Just think about how much better California would be if all those gun nuts would just GTFO?

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Republican politicians would rather protect Velveeta Voldermort than get justice for Epstein's victims! Most of these people have daughters, granddaughters, nieces. How can they be more concerned about protecting a criminal than they are about protecting vulnerable young girls from predators? It's hard to believe Marjorie Taylor Greene is showing more compassion for the victims than the actual First Lady! But where is JD Vance's wife? Surely she feels compassion for the victims? How could any woman listen to their stories and NOT feel compassion? What about Ivanka? She's nowhere to be found these days, but surely she has compassion for the victims?
I can't believe we've sunk so low as a country that this is even being debated. You simply don't take the side of the sex traffickers in a situation like this. I don't care who you are or what party you belong to or what country you live in, you don't side with sex traffickers. Release the files, the UNALTERED files, and let's help the victims get justice.
