This is something I feel needs a lot more attention because there are too many on the far left who really need to get their facts straight. While I know their intentions are good — I’ve written about that on my Substack — too many I come across seem to live in a bubble that simply isn’t based on facts or reality, just talking points.
For starters, the far left isn’t reinventing the wheel, and they certainly don’t own “progressive.” Whether they want to admit it or not, Democrats have been progressive dating back to FDR.
Which party’s president created Social Security and the New Deal?
Which party’s president created Medicare and Medicaid?
Which party’s president signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act?
Which party’s president created the minimum wage?
Which party’s president allowed gay Americans to serve in the military? Two of them, actually — first in the ’90s to allow a path to serve, then again years later to finally allow them to openly serve.
Which party’s president signed the National Labor Relations Act that strengthened unions and protections for workers?
That was all Democrats, from FDR to Harry Truman to LBJ to Clinton to Obama.
Every single Democrat who’s been in office from Roosevelt to Truman, to Johnson, to Carter, to Clinton, to Obama has tried to improve and expand health care coverage in this country.
Not only did Democrats create the minimum wage, but Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and Clinton all increased it. Obama tried, but he couldn’t get Republicans to support the legislation after they took back partial control of Congress during the 2010 midterms.
Look at what Bill Clinton — you know, that “establishment centrist” — was able to do without help from Republicans when Democrats actually controlled Congress after he was first elected:
Raised the top individual income tax rate from 31% to 39.6% for high-income Americans.
Increased the corporate tax rate.
Raised the taxable portion of Social Security benefits for higher-income Americans.
Expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit for lower-income workers.
Then, during the 1994 midterms, Republicans took back full control of Congress.
Here are a few numbers.
Since 1981 — that’s 45 years — there have been three Democratic presidents, serving a total of 20 years. That’s 44% of the time. In those 20 years, Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress for six of them. That’s 30% of the time those presidents were in office.
Meaning that, over the past 45 years, Democrats have controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress for just 13% of that time.
And each and every time they came into office, they had to clean up a mess left to them by their Republican predecessor.
Maybe that’s why they haven’t been able to be as “progressive” as they would like to be.
Getting big legislation enacted requires Congress. And not just Congress — you often need significant majorities in Congress unless you want to nuke the filibuster, which I know some want to do, but I don’t think that’s going to go how so many folks on the left think it will.
For example, if there were no filibuster right now, the voter-suppressing SAVE Act would be law, and Donald Trump would be able to disenfranchise millions of voters.
The far left can have all the big talking points they want, and I agree with most of their policies, but Bernie Sanders has been in Congress for 35 years, and he hasn’t accomplished a whole lot because, in that 35 years, Democrats have only controlled all of Congress for six of them.
I know, let me guess — it’s the “establishment” that hasn’t allowed any of these more progressive policies to pass.
Oh, bullsh*t.
That’s such a lazy response.
Are Democrats perfect? Of course not.
But guess what? Neither are all of these far-left candidates — no group is.
That said, this idea that the so-called “progressive wing” of the Democratic Party is somehow this unique, populist movement that we’ve never seen before is utter nonsense.
For decades, the majority of the most progressive policies we’ve seen in this country — from worker protections to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the minimum wage, pushes for universal health care, historic bills such as the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, allowing gay Americans to serve in the military, and raising taxes on the rich — were all signed by a Democrat in the White House.
So, the far left can live inside their echo chambers and try to criticize anyone who doesn’t meet their purity standards as “a centrist, establishment Democrat” — I don’t really care.
I’ve said it before: I despise labels, and I don’t care what anyone calls me. I’m someone whose stances on policies are shaped by facts, reality, context, logic, and common sense. At the end of the day, I want to help advocate for ideas that help the majority of Americans and are based on everything I just listed.
If that means my stance is more “left-wing,” great. If it’s more “moderately conservative,” so be it. If it’s somewhere in the middle, great.
People can call all of this whatever they want, but at the end of the day, I don’t care who’s right. I just want to make sure the decisions we’re making for this country are based on facts, reality, context, logic, and common sense.
But what I won’t do is sit by and allow a lot of folks on the far left to act like they’re something unique within the Democratic Party — they’re not.
Whether these folks want to admit it or not — and they can ignore all the facts I’ve laid out in this post if they so choose — Democrats have been the party of progressive ideas for decades.
The problem is, over the last half-century, Democrats have only controlled the White House and all of Congress for 13% of that time.
As I pointed out, look at what Clinton was able to do during his first two years just on tax reform — before Republicans took back Congress during the 1994 midterms.
Obama could have accomplished a lot more, too, but Republicans reclaimed power during the 2010 midterms.
Democrats haven’t been more progressive not because they haven’t wanted to be; it’s just incredibly difficult to get these big pieces of legislation passed when we elect a Democrat to the White House who then has to spend much of their first two years cleaning up a Republican mess.
And by the time they get through some of that, Republicans reclaim power in Congress and obstruct their ability to get most of what they wanted to accomplish through our legislative branch of government.
It happened with Clinton, Obama, and Biden.
And trust me, in 2028, if a Democrat wins that election, they’re going to have to come in and clean up a giant mess left to them by another Republican, Donald Trump.
It’s easy to be a cynic and sit on the sidelines judging everyone else for failing to get something passed. It’s a hell of a lot harder to be in those positions of power, trying to get this legislation through, when you don’t have a Congress with enough votes to pass any of it.
So, sure, Bernie Sanders and AOC can spend all their time talking about all these great ideas that they have, but anyone can do that — how do they expect to get them passed?
You see, that’s the hard part.
I admire the passion and drive many on the far left have. I agree with many of their policy stances and even that there are some Democrats who probably need to go — looking at you, Chuck Schumer — but this idea they seem to carry with them that they’re the only “progressives” on the left and anyone who isn’t with them is just a “centrist and part of the problem” is total bullsh*t.
Democrats dating back to the days of FDR have been fighting for many of the same policies that they advocate for today.
In fact, as I pointed out, a Democrat in the White House signed many of the most progressive policies we fight to defend today. They just didn’t call themselves “socialists” while doing it, trying to sound “edgy and different.”
They were Democrats.
Call them “New Deal Democrats” if you want. Call them “Social Democrats.” Call them whatever you want.
They were Democrats, and they signed a hell of a lot of really great, historic, and progressive pieces of legislation that helped build this country into the greatness that it became.
And it’s disingenuous for the far left to act as if that’s not true.
