Friends,

Some of us have families and live in communities that agree with us about the profound danger of another Trump presidency. But some of you have close relatives — a parent, child, sibling, even a spouse — who supports Trump. You feel dismayed by what has happened to them.

Others of you live in a town or city where there are many Trump supporters, or in a red state, or in a neighborhood where you see lots of Trump lawn signs and bumper stickers. You feel isolated and fearful.

Some of you are confused about whether Biden is the strongest candidate to take on Trump, and you’re worried about what Biden and the Democrats will decide.

I can’t sugarcoat this. It is dismaying, frightening, and worrying. We have already endured four years of Trump, and another term could tip America and the world into full-throated fascism. Trump has become even more unhinged and vindictive, and more knowledgeable about how to get horrendous things done.

Here are 11 suggestions for what you can do in the 118 days before Election Day:

Try not to allow issues such as whether Biden should resign, or his degree of responsibility for Gaza, to get in the way of your determination not to let Trump back into the White House. Regardless of our differences over these issues, they pale compared to the threat Trump poses.

For the same reason, please don’t decide to leave the top of the ticket blank or to vote for a third party or not to vote at all. All make it easier for Trump to win. Instead, make sure you and everyone you know and trust is registered to vote, and votes for Joe Biden or whomever is the Democratic candidate for president.

Don’t become so upset with politics that you drop out, stop reading the news, or give up on activism. The stakes are just too high. Even if you cannot take much time out of your normal life, you need to help organize, mobilize, and energize others.

Focus your time and energies on convincing people who still have open minds, to oppose Trump. Mobilize those who don’t normally vote, to vote. Organize get-out-the-vote efforts in your community. Get young people involved.

Counter lies with truth. When you hear someone repeating a Trump Republican lie, correct it.

Do not tolerate bigotry and hate. Call it out. Stand up to it. Denounce it. Demand that others denounce it, too.

Do not resort to violence, name-calling, bullying, or any of the other tactics that Trump followers may be using.

Be compassionate toward hardcore followers of Trump, but be firm in your opposition. Understand why someone may decide to support Trump, but don’t waste time and energy trying to convert them.

Don’t waste your time and energy commiserating with people who already agree with you, or criticizing Democrats for failing to communicate more effectively. None of this will get you anything except an upset stomach.

Demonstrate, but don’t confuse demonstrating with political action. You may find it gratifying to stand on a corner in Berkeley with a sign asking drivers to “honk if you hate fascism” that elicit lots of honks, but it’s as politically effectual as taking a warm shower.

Finally, don’t let any sensationalized news of the day divert your eyes from the goal: protecting American democracy during one of the greatest stress tests it has had to endure, fueled by one of the worst demagogues in American history.

I cannot overstate how critical the outcome of the next 118 days will be to everything you and I want for America and the world.

Its because what THEY CONSIDER BAD is stuff like equality. They see minorities or women getting equal rights or maybe succeeding in some way and that's BAD in their eyes. They see a black woman getting a doctorate or making history as the first WOC in a particular position and thats BAD to them. They see a white woman in a wheelchair working in a prestigious position in federal government and they get MAD. They see a gay gentleman making advances in tech or science and they get MAD. Because they see anyone besides themselves succeeding as taking success opportunities away from cis yt men. Thats what it is. They don't acknowledge how the black female doctor worked so hard for so long to achieve what she did. They like to talk as if that woman worked less hard than they did, even if they barely graduated High school and coasted into a cushy position in their father's used car dealership or whatever. And if they are struggling, say working in entry level retail or fast food, they pretend it's BECAUSE of that black woman or gay man. They don't like to honestly think about the reality and the fact that they never tried very hard. Or that they are unpleasant to be around and lost job opportunities because of their own egos and unwillingness to change. They generally know this even if they won't ever admit it. And that makes them even angrier! Its much easier to hate anyone different than to accept your own personal failings.
They can't communicate what was worse because saying "I WANT IT TO BE LIKE IT WAS WHEN I COULD OWN SLAVES AND BEAT WOMEN AND DIDNT HAVE TO RESPECT OTHERS!"sounds bad. Thats why. Don't waste your energy trying to make it deeper than it is.

I know you're right about all of this, but I still wish an actual right-winger would comment and explain where they're coming from. I have several on my friend list who most likely saw this post, but are choosing not to answer my question. There was one who (politely) commented the other day on another one of my posts, and when I (politely) asked them some questions, they never replied. I just wish they wanted to understand each other better and find some common ground. I find that most people on the left would like to find common ground, but it's the ones on the right who refuse to communicate with us.

Things I'm dreading about this coming summer:

1. The heat.
2. The extra time required to cover myself with sunscreen from head to toe every time I leave the house.
3. The extra expense of all that sunscreen.
4. Being unable to find parking spots in the shade and having to park my car in the hot, blazing sun.
5. Having to bring a change of clothes with me to work every day for when I step out of the freezing office into the sweltering heat.
Things I'm looking forward to about this coming summer:
1. The Greek festival on the first weekend of June.
2. Fresh seasonal summer fruit, especially figs.
3. Fresh corn on the cob.
4. Hot weather means less clothing which means lighter loads of laundry to haul to the laundromat.
5. The Santa Cruz Boardwalk at night.
6. County fairs.
7. The Scottish Highland Games on Labor Day weekend.
8. Road trips (hopefully-anyone wanna go?)

I live in Key Largo and I'm pale too. I also have tons of dangerous skin problems in my family (the big C) and when we lived aboard our sailboat I bought a ton of sunblocking clothing and some very high quality sun hats. I still use sunblock daily but I loathe the texture and anything sticky on my skin so it's easier and cleaner to use clothing. I particularly love my sunsleeves/gloves. They are easy to pop off and on and even help keep me cool. I've even been considering a sun umbrella. You should look into these options too!

I don't like the sticky/greasy feeling of sunscreen on my skin either, but I get too hot in the summer if I wear too much clothing. I haven't really tried type of sunblocking clothing you're talking about, though. If it doesn't feel restrictive and it doesn't make you feel hot, and if it isn't ugly, I would definitely consider trying some! I already wear wide-brimmed hats year-round because my eyes are so sensitive to glare, and I've been known to use a regular umbrella for extra shade.

The fundamental flaw with firing thousands of federal employees is the assumption that they do no work... That's a false assumption... In fact, all of those people have tasks... And those tasks will no longer be accomplished... Park Rangers... FAA employees... The military... The FDA... Fraud? Consumer protection? I think all of those things are worthy tasks to accomplish... Especially since my brother is planning to fly in an airplane next week... I recommended that his wife not accompanied him on this trip because I don't want them both to die...

I sometimes wish the weather people on TV would not talk about the fact that there isn't going to be any rain for a long time. San Jose gets SO LITTLE rain compared to the rest of the Bay Area. We've barely had any rain this season at all...but this morning on the news, the weather person is practically jumping for joy as they tell us that "the rain" (which never made it to San Jose) is going away and not coming back for a LONG time (their words). I feel like I wait all winter for the rain to finally ARRIVE, only to find out that it's never coming. And as someone who really, REALLY loves rain, that is extremely depressing.

The thing that really frightens me is the possibility of wildfire right here at home burning my own house to the ground... Rain prevents wildfires... And so every time it rains I thank Mother Nature for protecting me one more day... I live near Sacramento California and we have a lot of trees around here... And when it gets really dry... I'm afraid that the trees will catch on fire and burn down the neighborhood... That Happened quite often here in California!
