Imagine that it's many millennia ago, and you're one of the first Homo sapiens. What's that rustling in the tree? It could be the wind. It could be a leopard. It could be your enemy, lying in wait with a stone-tipped spear. It could be ... something supernatural! After all, you don't KNOW that that ball of fire in the sky isn't a supernatural being's chariot.
Hard-wired into us: curiosity. Alertness to danger. Alertness to the fact that that danger might have human or human-like intention about it. Also hard-wired into us is the tendency to see faces and personalities into everything. Seeing Jesus in a piece of toast, for example, or declaring that your car hates you and wants you to suffer.
So there's a rustling in the tree, and you go on high alert. But it seems to be nothing, the wind. You climb the tree, thinking you might find claw marks. And you fall out of the tree for what seems like no reason. You must have offended the goddess of the tree.
We are always curious, always seeking explanations, always imagining. Over the years, we evolved explanations for the great conundrums of life: why is there death? What happens after we die? Why is there evil? Is there a world that exists outside human senses, and if so, is that where my car keys are?
Over the centuries, the explanations became more elaborate and evolved into ever more byzantine forms. A myth about how the Mother Goddess blessed humanity with the ability to tell right from wrong morphed into a myth about a hyper-masculine God who punished both the Goddess and humanity for the sin of going behind his back and obtaining moral awareness without him. A few more centuries, and Paul of Tarsus changed the myth yet again, to explain that sin, evil, and death are all the fault of Woman. (A few more centuries, and fundamentalists declared that wasn't myth at all, but history.)
The problem isn't religion. If God exists, God must be infinite, by definition. And that means that anything any human says about God's nature and Intentions is infinitely wrong.
Religion has produced much evil -- but it has also produced much good. The problem, I believe, comes when the followers of a given religion force their beliefs on others. "Our religion states that women are men's property; therefore women must get men's permission to make medical decisions."
In judging a given religion, judge the behavior of its practitioners on these scales: understanding, compassion, kindness, and love. A religion that practices hatred of lovers who want to buy wedding cakes falls pretty low.
