BREAKING: Trump’s new “TrumpRX” drug program gets IMMEDIATELY exposed as a scam!

Surprise, surprise! The president held a big to-do yesterday at the White House where he boasted about how, for example, with his new Trump RX program, “they’re slashing the price of a common inhaler from $458 to $51, a difference of nearly 800%.”

First, off, Donnie, that is not an 800% difference. It is 88%. But that’s not the point.

While Trump billed the program as the result of his masterful negotiations with drug companies, users quickly realized that “Trump Rx” was just a reskin of the GoodRx program...that only had about 50 prescriptions available, with prices more expensive than could be found in other places.

For some drugs, like weight-loss drugs like Wegovy, the “savings” were a straight-up scam. TrumpRX boasts that it’s taking the price from $1,349.02 to just $199 — but if you read the fine print, it clearly says it’s just $199 for the first two months, then the price jumps to $349 a month.

For something like an inhaler, the TrumpRX lists it for $51 — but when you click on it, you are taken directly to the AstraZeneca website to see if you qualify for a hardship program that they ALREADY HAD.

All the drugs available are already covered by health insurance, which TrumpRX does not accept.

“TrumpRx is a side show,” Sean D. Sullivan, a health economist at the University of Washington, said to the New York Times. “I consider it not a real, serious effort in service to lowering prescription drug prices for Americans.”

They call their cruelty “faith,” their bigotry “morality,” their vengeance “God’s will.” But nothing in the life of Christ resembled this hunger for conquest, this delight in punishment, this gleeful trampling of the vulnerable. If anything, their devotion is not to Jesus at all… but to a man who told them their darkest instincts were holy. And they followed him, not because he lifted them up, but because he let them sink without shame.
And the truth is… they aren’t worshiping God at all. They’re worshiping a projection of themselves embroidered onto a deity they’ve remade in their own image. A God who hates all the same people they do. A God who excuses their cruelty and blesses their prejudices. A God who functions less like a savior and more like a shield for their ego. And if there is anything holy happening right now, it’s the way the world is holding up a mirror… on a national scale… showing them exactly who they’ve become. But they’re too entranced by their own narrative to see it. Too fused with their hatred to recognize the reflection looking back is not righteousness, but the sum of their fears dressed up as faith. The exposure is everywhere, loud as a siren, clear as daylight… and somehow they still can’t see that the very system they defend is revealing them to themselves.

Sunday is the National Day of Reason. Too bad we live in an Age of Nonsense.

Trump is pushing forward with a Commission on Anti-Christian Bias despite most Americans, including many Christians, believing that it’s a waste of time and Christians aren’t oppressed.

The federal government is shutting down research, and national parks, and the office that answers the phone when people have questions about their student loans.

The Supreme Court is seriously considering allowing your tax dollars to be used to teach other people’s kids a religion you don’t believe in.

The White House is even implying it wants to use the US military to prevent crime.

But we’re not taking it lying down. We’re fighting back with legislation. We’re funding local humanist groups from Colorado to Mississippi providing mutual aid for their community.

And we’re also calling the lack of reason out for what it is - because as Jefferson said, “ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions.”

We helped Reps. Jared Huffman and Jamie Raskin introduce a proclamation recognizing the National Day of Reason in the face of unmitigated absurdity - and we hope you’ll call on your Member of Congress to sign on here.

Proclamations and events, like the Reason Reception we co-hosted on Capitol Hill earlier this week, seem like small things. But when more and more members of Congress are willing to publicly affiliate themselves with secularism and open advocacy for church-state separation - that’s how we build power. The bigger, louder, and better organized we are, the harder it is for the religious right to steamroll us.

That’s why we’re excited that Rep. Judy Chu has joined the Congressional Freethought Caucus this week - meaning the caucus we helped found is growing faster than ever in its history.

And it’s a good time for our movement to be growing - because we have a big fight ahead.

The Supreme Court’s decision in its St. Isidore case could be monumental - a generational blow to church-state separation and the right of all students to receive a free and equal public education regardless of their religion.

It could open the door for religious law and instruction to infect every area of government.

We don’t want our tax dollars to be used for religious schools that openly admit they may not accept people like us as teachers.

In general, we don’t want to create a world where education and other public services are run by private interests that aren’t accountable to voters, where different kinds of people get different kinds of service. Ninety-two years ago, we declared “humanists demand a shared life in a shared world” - and we meant it.

Public services should work for all of us. They shouldn’t be privatized. They shouldn’t be subdivided with special carve-outs for people of particular faiths. They should be equally open and accessible to all people.

That’s why humanism matters. It’s not just about demanding the separation of church and state. It’s about demanding a world where everyone matters and counts - without exception. Where everyone’s dignity and humanity is taken care of - no matter who you are or what you believe. And it’s about reason - acting in line with common sense, not nonsense.

In an age of absurdity, reason’s an act of rebellion. But what else is new? Humanists have always been rebels. This moment doesn’t require us to be different people - just a little louder, a little braver.

We can all be a beacon of reason in an age of nonsense.

What is that yellow thing in the sky? By George, it’s the sun! Nice to see you, Ol’ Sol. Thanks for giving us a chance to soak up that lovely precipitation. Fingers crossed for more steady rain over the next couple of months. If it could come without the words torrential or flood being used, that would be nice, too. No sense in watching it all flow downstream.

This is great for the dry well folks, who will certainly see a rise in their water levels if this keeps up. The surface water deliveries for ag interests may even be at higher capacity this year, allowing farmers to not pump as much groundwater as in the recent dry past. Let’s recharge, baby!

We’re not out of the woods yet by any means, but the picture is much rosier than we had any right to expect. Shasta Lake is at 52% of capacity and Oroville is at 58%. That’s fantastic with the snowpack we have. And it doesn’t feel like the spigot is going to shut off anytime soon, does it? But what do I know? Donny One-Ball the Donkey is a much better weather forecaster than I and he ain’t talkin’.

Let’s just hope for the best and not waste any more time giving lip service to protecting the groundwater we have. The time has come – and passed – for substantive action. I’m looking at you, Groundwater Sustainability Agency. The Flood Control Conservation District (board of supervisors) will meet on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Board Chambers at 727 Oak St. in Red Bluff.

On the agenda are overviews of the Well Registry Program and the Survey Public Workshop to be held Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Red Bluff Community Center. I have a few questions about the Registry. Why are they asking us for this information when the county has records back to the 1980s? DWR has over 800,000 records statewide on a searchable map. If you can’t find one on there, you can write them and they will send you the info. Why are we paying a consulting firm, megabucks to create the database? Why are landowners footing the bill through a tax disguised as a fee on their property taxes?

The database is not mandated by the state – groundwater sustainability is. The registry is supposed to tell us where and how groundwater is being used. Um, really? Take a drive around the county and look out the window. This is a lengthy project to keep us busy for three years before they have to take any effective action.

This will be the first FCWC meeting for the two new board members, Pati Nolen and Matt Hansen. Water was a focus of both their campaigns, so it will be interesting to hear what they have to say about this. And the way our GSA has handled its responsibilities up until now.

Tuesday will see the second regular board of supervisors meeting of the year and has an ambitious agenda. There will be an update on the Public Authority, which you wouldn’t think would be a big deal, but totally is. Supervisor Carlson has been asking for more information on how it operates forever. That’s what started the whole nightmare of complaints to the Grand Jury and the ultimate exoneration of Carlson.

There’s also an item for the addition of an Information Technology Coordinator. Yes, an IT person. On the surface, it looks like we’re entering the 21st century at last, but that’s not the case. The county wants beloved retired Tax Collector Dana Hollmer in the position, so a job description was created for her. The job will be flown of course, wink wink.

Hollmer earned a small stipend coordinating between the county and our main systems provider, Apex, during her tenure as County Tax Collector. She loved the work and did a great job, but she is not an IT expert. She had no authority to update processes in other departments unless that department head was so inclined.

And guess what? Many of them weren’t so inclined. That’s why our Auditor’s office is still doing county payroll manually. Paper time cards in 2023. It may also be one reason we have no Well Registry in Environmental Health. Related aside – the recently retired directors of those two departments have also been hired back “to help”. Tim Potanovic from EH and former Auditor LeRoy Anderson. How can we miss them if they won’t go away?

Hollmer is not being hired to take our systems to the next level. She is coming to piece back together the systems she left that have been unraveling a bit since her retirement over a year ago. Nobody replaced her, so the tweaks and glitches she took care of have not been happening.

In other words, Hollmer will get us back to where we were before she left. This is not progress, but it will help. Disclaimer – Dana is a good friend of mine and I adore her. She will do a great job and doesn’t want this to be permanent. So…

Let’s start looking for a real IT person or better yet, an IT department. Apex could even supply a person or two to help analyze where processes could be streamlined and develop systems where departmental interface could be improved. Security should be a concern, too, as we learned from the data breach at Social Services where thousands of people’s personal information was exposed. Social Services has its own IT person or people, and a thorough barn door repair must have been performed after that gigantic horse got out.

This is Tehama County settling for less instead of being open to the possibility of a better way. We deserve a bright future. Are we ready to invest in it?
