At the man's funeral, his son said that the movie was a fake. The other people who lived in Willow Creek objected strongly to his stating the truth in public. So he retracted his statement. There are many tourist business that depend on the Bigfoot Legend to bring customers to remote Humboldt County.

I read a book about Bigfoot where the author interviewed many Hoopa Indians. He brought a Police Sketch Artist along with him and the Indians described what Bigfoot looked like... ALL THE PICTURES LOOKED THE SAME... None of the People Interviewed Knew What their Neighbor's Sketches Looked Like... a Totally Honest Experiment...

Great Backpacking Trips in Northern California

Hetch Hetchy: A level path goes around the lake. A good place to camp about 5 miles in. We used it as a base camp for "free climbing" granite. Be careful of accidentally slipping into the river... I did upstream of Wapama Falls.

Canoe Creek Trail - Avenue of the Giants - Humboldt County.
A hidden footbridge over the Eel River lets a person explore in a virtually human free zone. Walk from the Garden Club of America Grove to the river, walk upstream about a quarter of a mile and That's where the footbridge is...  The Roads and civilization are all on the other side of the river... I Don't Know if that Bridge is Still There... However, One Day I Was Feeling Stressed and When I Got to The Other Side of The EEL... I Felt Relaxed...

In 1972 we went backpacking in the Yolla Bolly Middle Eel Wilderness. Liz Dunbar, myself and two brothers. The brothers were hang gliders. I wonder what ever happened to them. We had a great time. The brothers taught us an acapella singing technique. One person would act as a conductor and whenever he pointed at you, you sang your short bit. A percussive scat singing... like "dink ka dink ka do wah", "badda badda shoop shoop" or "diddy wah diddy"... Then the conductor would sing an improvised melody.

Another great place to backpack is Hobo Gulch in the Trinity Alps off #299. Joe Franck showed me where is was... Granite, Cold Crystal Clear Lakes... melted snow.... Above timber line we navigated using topo maps and just walked where there were no trails...

Big Sur: Sykes Camp Hot Springs. 12 mile hike in at Pfeiffer State Park on the Pine Ridge Trail up the Big Sur River. Very Hot dry difficult hike. Take two days... Stay at Barlow Flats to rest... Ranger maintained and totally natural hot spring seats 4 comfortably. There is a Parking Lot at the Big Sur Trailhead...

I remember that when we went backpacking we always went to the Ranger Station to get a fire permit. We told them where we were going and when we would be coming back. That way, if we didn't check back in, they would send a rescue team out to look for us.

It's entirely possible to fall down and break a leg in the back country and be unable to walk out. Plus, the rangers had local knowledge of what was interesting in their neighborhood. Waterfalls, good fishing, epic views... I always loved those USGS maps showing elevation and sometimes we would just walk to a hidden lake by navigation.  "It's got to be just on the other side of that pass so... let's go!" It was a reasonable way to hike above timberline. Not so practical in the woods. 

In the High Sierra, people would stack rocks on top of each other in order to mark trails. Above timber line, the ground is all granite and wearing a trail into the dirt just doesn't happen. We would walk to a stack of rocks, look for the next stack and walk there and then look for the next stack of rocks... and on and on... That way we were able to go backpacking using "Ducks" to navigate. Since it was impossible for rocks to stack themselves, we knew that people had gone there before and were marking the trail...

Take “A” South for roughly 8.5 miles; (Lea Road)
Take a left onto West Delta Rd (also known as FS Rd. 231)
Go 2 miles and turn left onto Musky Lake Rd. (FS Rd. 411)
Go 1 mile, turn right on Canthook Rd. (FS Rd. 412)
Look for parking options within the next three miles. Remember to park with all four wheels completely off the road.

I liked camping at the "Welcome Home" Kitchen... They provided Hot Coffee, Clean Drinking Water and Vegetable Soup... PLUS, it was the first place We got to from the parking lot so MANY people walked thru... and Many accepted our invitation to sit a spell... I had the blessing of working there as a FIRE TENDER when the other guys went off to trade a large thermos of hot coffee for Pizza... Someone had to be the responsible adult and watch the fire... and I volunteered... Then I walked over to the Big Shady Spot at Main Meadow... In UTAH, the elevation requires that you pay attention to SUNBURN and Sitting in the Shade is a Blessing...

FOREST ROAD 412:
Some good advice for when you are just arriving at the Site of the Rainbow Gathering itself:
The final road, Forest Road 412 is a ONE WAY road. When you see cars parked along the road, on the right hand side, pull off, making sure that all four of your wheels are off the roadway. Get your gear and begin to hike to the trail head. If you see a better parking spot, leave a friend there to hold it for you, and go back and bring your vehicle forward.

If you start driving the road hoping for an open spot, and there is NOT one, you will need to do a full 30 minute drive around the loop to come back down the one-way road again.

The Rainbow Family of Living Light chose to hold its 2019 annual gathering on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest on the Washburn Ranger District. The unauthorized gathering site will be located near Canthook Lake off of Forest Service Road 412 near the town of Delta,  about 20 minutes from Iron River, Wisconsin. The gathering is expected to last through the July 4 weekend.  After that, several Rainbow Family members stay on site for several weeks to work on clean-up and rehabilitation.

You need to bring permethrin for your clothes and a old cotton sheet that you can tie to a stick like a flag and sweep grasses around tent and on paths for tics they cling to cotton then kill them. This is deer tic heaven and lymes is probably your biggest concern In these woods. They are everywhere. Tic check daily do not miss a day. Always be watching everyone else too. It is very serious. I’ve lived most of my life here and haven’t contracted it yet but have treated for it a few times just in case. I just had one imbedded this morning from 5 minutes in the woods yesterday. If they remain on you for 30 hours you need to go get a dose of antibiotics antibiotics are effective within first two weeks after infection. If you wait they become ineffective quickly. So many people around here have lymes disease.
You can buy pemethrin anywhere but if you go to an agricultural store they have it in concentrate and ten bucks worth will make ten gallons of spray and it last a month on the clothes you treat and it works they die when they get on your clothes. Also do not wear clothing til it has dried after spraying it causes nerve problems. This tic and mosquito repellant is made from marigold plants. They haven’t been to bad yet this year. This was my first one this year. But that means the hatch has started. I tell you this because I love you! 💕

Every year about 10,000 hippies and freethinkers go backpacking for a week on July 1st thru 7th. The location is always different and not revealed until about two weeks before it starts. I went to the gathering with a goal in mind. I wanted to play my guitar and sing in public. Yes, mission accomplished. Living in Chico, California and working at the plastics factory when there was a layoff, my wife suggested that I borrow the car and drive over to the gathering. My friend Mike Jensen wanted to go and so we checked the oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid and water and set out on a classic American road trip. We made it as far as Reno the first day and slept by the side of the road.

My experiences following the Grateful Dead...

It became apparent that there was something ELSE going on in addition to "rock and roll/show business". Some times I would not bother to buy a ticket to the concert at all but was happy to play music in the parking lot. Many people DID NOT attend the concerts. They went to experience the scene that surrounded the DEAD. There was a philosophy that the band was not the center of attention.

The Rainbow Gathering is the logical outgrowth of this feeling. The people from the audience (and other like minded individuals) meet in a National Forest and have a wonderful camping trip. At this level, the band does not even attend at all.

In 1972, a friend of mine went to San Francisco and went to the Fillmore West and came back to our high school and said... LET"S BUILD OUR OWN.

That was the beginning of Forbes Mill in Los Gatos California... We had a light show and electric rock music every weekend at an abandoned stone flour mill in the center of town... On Wednesday nights we performed folk music. My band performed... I was the head of security and did advertising posters.

Since we had Town sponsorship of our "Teen Club" thru the organization Youth Unlimited, we had to make sure no laws were being broken or the police would shut us down. Certainly no drinking or illegal drug use or housing of runaways. My take on law enforcement was to direct potential lawbreakers to the nearby hole in the fence that lead to the wooded area next to the freeway.  I admit that a lot of laws were broken on State of California property, but that was NOT MY CONCERN. I was responsible for making sure that OUR property was crime free.

The light show was created by using four slide projectors and two spinning wheels with variable speed motors that blocked the light from reaching the white wall behind the bandstand. Each cardboard wheel had holes cut into it so that the slides would be projected in a stroboscopic manner.  Some slides were abstract art created by "crystal craze" paint and others were photographs.

We also owned a strobe light and I learned to not point it at the electric organ player because the blinking light made it impossible to see which keys were black and which were white...
