As Abby moves to go to middle school in Arcata and her mom has already emptied her place here to be up there with her guy, I look at all the gifts I've given that are being left behind and given away and I am reminded of the love, the big love, that went into each one. Each is a reminder of a moment, a time of happiness long gone. Sometimes I'm made fun of for giving too many presents, but I got that from my mom and I'm fine with it. There's the swimming pool, the playground, all the special furniture, the renovations, the clothes, the two sweet Mother's Day cats left behind (now I've got 5 cats), and so much more. My farm hands are gone and I'm alone with Abby to make do before I move in 2 weeks(!) with our two small dogs half time or more to a good friend's RV in McKinleyville to support her schoolwork while I try to find some one perhaps to look over this place. Oh, I know I'm blessed and privileged to have found an affordable rental and that I have the resources to do all this. At 67 and living out the last third of my life with a lot of unfinished work, this major shift in my world is a lot for my heart to take in and all the while, a lot for my body to do.

and now for something Completely Different... Memories of a Burning Man Participant!

I've been thinking about the fact that this year marks 20 years since the first time I went to Burning Man. 20 years. I can't believe it's been that long. It makes me feel so old. I went to Burning Man 7 times starting in 2001. My last time was 2009. 2001 was magical because it was all so new. 2002 and 2003 were even more magical because I was more prepared. By 2004, I was an experienced desert camper who knew exactly what I needed to do to be comfortable out there in the desert for a week. I would spend all year accumulating supplies for the playa, and participating in different events in the local burner community in L.A., where I lived at the time, including camping trips on lakebeds in the Mojave desert, which have a similar climate to Black Rock Desert.

I do miss it sometimes, especially when I see posts from my friends who still go to Burning Man every year. I'm so glad I got to go at the time I did, when there was no cell reception out there and you really did have to take a break from technology while you were there. There was something really special about that. I remember the gigantic bulletin board where you could post a note for your friends. It was huge, and it was covered with thousands of notes...but that was what made it special. I always managed to locate the people I was looking for out there, despite the lack of technology, I always found people's camps through word-of-mouth. That was part of the fun, wandering the playa and trying to find people, and meeting other people in the process. Now I hear that people are walking around texting on their phones, and to me that seems like it would take away from the experience a little bit. Part of what made it special was the fact that you were out there in the middle of the desert, far away from civilization, and you had to adapt to this world without phones or technology, and you had to be prepared to survive out there for a week, with all the water and food you would need to get through, and it was so much fun meeting that challenge. I always prided myself on having water leftover at the end, and I also showered every day on the playa.

20 years. I just can't believe it.

As the comments came pouring in throughout the second half of that year, it quickly became clear that something was amiss. A little over a week after the comment period opened, John Oliver dedicated a 20-minute segment of his HBO show to the issue, imploring users to make their voices heard to try to prevent, as he put it, “cable company f*ckery.” The comments flooded the FCC, so much so that the agency’s electronic filing system shut down—as an investigation by the FCC’s inspector general determined when he looked into the matter. When the system initially went down, however, Pai incorrectly told Congress it was because of a mysterious cyberattack. By the end of May, Vice found that comments in favor of the FCC repeal were being posted under the names of dead people. Further investigations found that comments in favor of repealing net neutrality were also coming from stolen identities, including those of lawmakers, like Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego, who had fake comments posted on their behalf advocating against net neutrality. Bots were posting comments. Hundreds of thousands of comments were coming in from Russian email addresses. Still, despite these improprieties, more than 99 percent of the organic comments—meaning the evidence points to them being from actual people and not prewritten—were found to be in favor of preserving net neutrality.

Now, according to the new investigation from BuzzFeed, it appears that more than a million of the suspicious comments filed to the FCC were the product of a shady outside firm hired by political campaigns using people’s information stolen from a data breach.
