I haven't been to the Red Bluff Round-Up since I was old enough to know better. I’m a hypocrite when it comes to rodeos. I’ve spent most of my life building fences and pens to keep horses, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and other animals where people wanted them until they could eat or ride them. My mom was an endurance rider and bred Arabs and Connemaras to get ‘better’ horses. I still dress up like John Growney and trot our one-eyed one-balled Watch Donkey around the field roping the dogs. Like the tired old round-up trope says, “They love it!” The family ancestry test ‘22 And You’ reports I have some cowboy in me, like it or not. Doesn’t mean I need to go to the rodeo and rub it in my face.
When I was very young I would hide under the bleachers and root for the bulls. One year I had to go because my long haired dad was working the back gates letting cowboys in and out all day. Then he'd go to the Iron Horse at night to get beat up by the same guys. Back when America was great again.
But I was looking at the list of events for rodeo week this year and I'm thinking I might have to check it out.
For the younger cowpies they have pony races and ‘mutton busting’ (riding and racing sheep). Even I used to race ponies like a fierce young Native American brave when my mommy made me. Barrel racing, pole racing, chasing your runaway pony racing. That’s normal. But racing on sheep is funny and weird. It’s way down on the list of questionable things being done to animals at rodeos and I love it when the sheep make the kids cry so what the hell.
Of course there's the Wild Whore Races. They used to do that right downtown on Main Street, which was very dangerous. Every year some whore would break her leg and they'd have to put her down. The kids would all be crying. Some of the dads too.
The Wild Ride–that’s where cowboys dress up in flamboyant costumes and race each other. As if their high heeled girly boots and sideways pirate hats aren’t hilariously homoerotic enough.
The debauchery continues with events like Breakaway Roping, Tie Down Roping and Team Roping. Sounds like the event list at the S&M Championships in Vegas, but it’s even knottier. There’s more people tying up more animals in more different ways than you ever thought possible.
There used to be something called the Bud Light 3000 Barrel Race, but I guess they dropped that when Budweiser went all woke and libtard. Every time they raced around the barrels they’d have to slam a Bud Light. And they had to do it 3000 times because that’s how many it would take to get drunk on Bud Light. I've had 2000 Bud Lights and driven home. Like everyone at the rodeo.
There are still the classic events like steer wrestling. I always thought that sounded a little gay. Like real wrestling. And fake wrestling. I always picture two old ex-Mr. Spartans with their shirts off…sweating, grunting, grappling. Grappling is definitely gay. Is that what steer wrestling means? I just want to know what color singlet to wear.
I don’t understand why we’re still using horses and cows and all those softie animals in the Round-Up. The cowboys and ranchers will tell you–cattle are practically an endangered species! And it’s all because of the damn dangerous wildlife like wolves, mountain lions and coyotes. Now I don’t believe that. I’ve always lived in the country and I know how to stay safe around wildlife--don’t get close, you won’t get shot. Common sense.
But let’s say the meat sellers are right and that wildlife is the real problem--then let’s round ‘em up and put ‘em in the rodeo!

And any cowpoke who can stay on the back of a mountain lion for eight seconds deserves a belt buckle. And a proper burial. Staying on the back of an aging cougar doesn’t count, but count me in anyway.
The winner of the Miss Tehama County crown should be the last one standing after all the contestants try to mudwrestle a wild pig. This should cost extra.
And no Wildlife Rodeo would be complete without bareback riding. On a bear. First guy to stay on long enough for the chute to open wins. Do not look to the clowns for help. They are comedians–they love to watch their friends die in front of a crowd.
The one thing I really don't want to miss is the big Round-Up After Party. I enjoy a good knife fight. Just kidding. It's a roomful of drunk cowboys, drunk vaqueros, and drunk Debra Winger wannabes--what could possibly go wrong? Entertainment by Chad Bushnell doing his big hit “My Little Red, White, and Blueprint Girl”.
The soft country shitkicker music star of the rodeo this year is Chase Matthew. He’s pretty, but he’s no Beyonce.
And, of course there are the ancillary events like the Chili Fart-Off, Cowboy Frisbee Golf, Peer Pressured Enough To Wear Pink Party, Cowboy Poetry Beat Down, the Chamber of Commerce DUI Mixer, and the Cow Flop Pancake Breakfast. The Bikini Barrel Races have not succumbed to political correctness and are still jiggling along. I’m glad to see that. I became a man watching those races. Not much of one, but still.
The only event I actually give a pooper scoop about is the annual Round-Up Parade. Which is broadcast every year on KKOW Radio. Rodeo radio. I always listen because what’s better than a parade on the radio? Especially when it's being described by Red Bluff's own Big Bull Sale and Fruity Lou Peckerwood. Right here-

I no longer feel comfy in our little group because it is just that, a little group. Yesterday I was witnessing a conversation between local people here about how supermarkets and large corporations help people. We are f*cking doomed. People aren't even on another page. They're on a totally different book and there is absolutely no time now for any change. Too many lost people who think they're all good.

But if every local news channel is going to play that awful commercial every 10-15 minutes, I can't watch anymore. I've been watching a lot more MSNBC, because they don't play the San Diego commercial - at least, not yet.
It makes me feel bad, though. I understand that TV stations play certain commercials because they are paid to play them. But playing the same commercial every 10-15 minutes for months on end is excessive. Surely I can't be the only person who has been driven crazy by that one commercial. But it makes me feel bad that I can't watch local news anymore. Also, having my TV tuned to the local NBC affiliate is how I happened to discover the reboot of Quantum Leap, which I probably never would have watched if my TV hadn't already been tuned to that channel as background noise. It's actually a great show. Now I hear it's being cancelled, but that's a whole other story.
If I actually sit down to WATCH a show, I usually record the show on my DVR ahead of time so I can fast-forward through the commercials. This is what I do every week for SNL. They show that God-forsaken commercial during SNL too, but at least I can fast-forward through it. But I really miss being able to have my local networks on as background noise. I guess this will have to be the way it is through the summer. I'm hoping they take a break from that horrible commercial in October like they did last year.
