Local and federal authorities spent months investigating a warehouse in Fresno County, California, that they suspect was home to an illegal, unlicensed laboratory full of lab mice, medical waste and hazardous materials.
The Fresno County Public Health Department has been "evaluating and assessing the activities of an unlicensed laboratory" in Reedley, the health department's assistant director, Joe Prado, said in a statement Thursday. All of the biological agents were destroyed by July 7 following a legal abatement process by the agency.

Fort Detrick, Md., was created in the middle of World War II and became the center for America's biological warfare efforts. But that role shifted in 1969, the government says, to focus solely on defense against the threat of biological weapons.

Then called Detrick Air Field, the science and research facility housed four biological agent production plants.

Anthrax was considered the most important agent. Simulants were tested, and one bomb was readied for production in 1944. One million bombs were ordered, though the order was canceled when the war ended in 1945.


During the 1950s, the biological weapons program was among the most classified within the Pentagon. There was an emphasis on biological agents for use against enemy forces as well as plants and animals.

The tragic side effect of the HIPPA law is that it prevents sharing of data between doctors offices. In 1976 I worked for a computer company that was going to revolutionize medical record keeping and distribution by using computers to store health records. That dream failed to happen because of this LAW. Every time you go to a new doctor you have to tell them all your medical history because they are prevented from accessing your health records. I personally don't care if someone else is GAY. However, this law does cause problems for the majority of people... What if you go to the hospital and you are so badly injured that you can't talk? It would be very good if an emergency room could access your medical records. But they can't. Because some people don't want to come out of the closet.
