The jazz festival in San Jose was awesome yesterday. We were there until almost 11pm, and the festival was still going at that time. I've always loved evening festivals because the sun and heat are not an issue. The music is surprisingly not at all what you would expect. I did not hear any traditional jazz music at all, aside from the big band/swing music on the swing stage. But the rest of the music was more like jazzy funk. There is also a blues stage and a latin jazz stage. Many people dance, which renewed my interest in learning ballroom dancing. I've always wanted to learn, but have never taken lessons. But every time I see people doing ballroom dancing, it makes me wish I knew how. So perhaps I'll be motivated to sign up for lessons at some point.

One of the cool things about the jazz festival is the way it's laid out. It takes up a huge section of downtown San Jose, and you have to do a LOT of walking to get from one stage to the other. So of course it was great exercise. Thankfully, it wasn't nearly as hot as the weather forecast had predicted. The high temperature only reached about 84, and it dropped down into the upper 60s in the evening. Plus, there is a ton of shade there, and the buildings of downtown SJ provide additional shade as you wander through town to the other stages.

There is a TON of great food at the festival, interesting food which you don't see at most other festivals. I ate some bao buns, an arepa, a frozen watermelon drink, and a birthday cake/cotton candy soft serve ice cream cone. There was so much more that I would have eaten if I'd had room for more food. I actually wish we had gotten tickets for the entire weekend so I could go back today and try more of the food. In the future, I'll make a whole weekend out of the festival. This is the third time I've been. The last time was in 2019.

The overall energy of the festival is very positive. It became more crowded as the night wore on, and most people bring folding chairs to sit in. We did not bring folding chairs, but I will definitely bring one next time. In addition to the food, there are other vendors selling really interesting and different merchandise. Many of the vendors are from Africa, selling African products which you don't see very often. I meant to go back and buy some patchouli oil (because you can never have enough patchouli oil) and some African black soap, but I got so distracted by everything else that I forgot. In 2019, I bought some hurachie shoes there which I wear all the time. There were also some really interesting clothes for sale which I considered buying, but ultimately I did not buy anything except food.

San Jose friends: I highly recommend this festival. Don't be worried about the "jazz" part. There is no Kenny G, nothing even remotely like Kenny G, and none of that awful free jazz. The music is not at all what you expect. This festival is really different, and really worth experiencing. Buy tickets for the entire weekend, bring a folding chair, and make a weekend out of it.

I was so busy enjoying the festival and the company of the person I was with, I did not take many photos. The only ones I took were these two pics of some of the food I ate: my arepa, and my birthday cake/cotton candy soft serve cone. I tried to get some video of the swing stage, but my video didn't turn out very good, so I deleted it. My feet ache today from all the walking, but I feel like I got some great exercise, which is another plus of the jazz festival. You really burn off all of the food you eat.

I've had several pairs of Oakleys in the past, but it's been a long time since I've had a pair of really good quality sunglasses...and what a difference it makes! I wore them on my drive home from the mall, and I couldn't believe the difference from the cheap sunglasses I was wearing before. I've been wearing cheap ones for so long, I had forgotten what a striking difference it makes to wear quality sunglasses. I hope I haven't done too much damage to my eyes by wearing cheap ones for so many years. My vision is a mess, but hopefully my cheap sunglasses haven't contributed to that.

There's a peach tree growing right along the street a couple blocks from where I live. It's on the curb strip, so not technically on anyone's property. I've picked peaches from it in the past, but I'm always a little nervous about doing that in case it actually does belong to the nearest house. But I've been eyeing it for a while, and it's loaded with peaches, and lately I've noticed that there are peaches all over the ground underneath the tree. So today I went over there and picked as many as I could, because apparently nobody else is picking them. I hope I don't show up on someone's Nextdoor video with the caption, "Does anyone know this woman who came and picked my peaches?!?" But there are still a TON more on the tree, because I could only get the ones I could reach. There are hundreds more still on the tree, and hundreds on the ground for the possums. I hope someone else picks the rest because it makes me sad to see beautiful fruit go to waste.

Just because it’s hot OUTSIDE, I never understand why businesses want to go so far to the other extreme on the INSIDE. The a/c should be on, of course, but why must it be so uncomfortably cold?!? We have no control over the temperature of this office. It’s just blasting icy cold air. Most businesses are like this, and I’ve never understood why nobody sets the a/c to a moderate temperature instead of a deep freeze. If it’s hot enough outside that I would wear shorts and a tank top, I don’t want to require heavy winter layers while I’m INSIDE. It would be nice if I could just wear my outside clothes inside and still be comfortable. At home I don’t crank the air to a deep freeze because I want to be COMFORTABLE in my home. Comfortable means much cooler than outside, but not uncomfortably cold. I really wish businesses would do the same so people could wander in and out of places without the temperature difference being a shock to the system.
