The first time I went to New York was with my parents. We took a Thrilling Boatride down the Ausable Chasm. Steep Cliffs. DEEP! It's way far north near Lake Champlain. (the Border between NY and Vermont) - That was the Trip that we drove all over the North East USA. We Went to Yale University where I bought a Sweatshirt with LARGE Letters... That was When I was Very Young... Before I Stopped using my Clothes as a Billboard for Corporations to Advertise on...  and Mystic Seaport... and Bangor Main... With my Father Singing "King of the Road" because we also had a Destination, Bangor Maine...

The NEXT Journey was to Visit my Brother That Lived in Rural New Jersey near Suffern. He was a College Student at NYU. The Student Housing was an apartment on a Lake in a Forest. I took the PATH Train to Downtown Manhattan and Wandered all over Looking at the Tall Buildings... I was a senior in high school... 1972...

On another Day My Brother, His Wife and I went Downtown... She Insisted that She Dress Up Formally since we were going "To Town" and that Meant Wearing a Dress. It was Astonishingly Cold that Day and I was Wearing Long Johns under my Pants. She was Freezing so we Stopped and Bought her Boots that Covered her Legs Up to Near the Knees... Just to Fight off the Cold... Of Course we COULD Have Bought her Pants and Long Johns but THAT Wouldn't Have Been Fashionable... Just Wasn't Done!

That Year Martin and I Went to Times Square for New Years Eve... The only thing I remember about that was Cold Weather, Large Crowds and a Ball Dropping...

~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~
in 1975 I was working at the "Old Paint Store" in Valley Fair and two other Employees took an EPIC Bicycle Ride along the Coast of New England... So after hearing Stories all Winter Long, Jo Ann and I Took Our Own EPIC Bike Ride... (last chance to do something like that before we got married...) From New York City to Washington DC. It took us about Two Months... We rode a Greyhound Bus to the Station in Manhattan where a Friend of My Brother's Picked us up. The Three Day Bus Ride Caused Her Feet to Swell Up and she Had Difficulty Walking for a Day... So we just Rested at a Hotel...
He lived in Upstate New York on the Hudson River in Nyack. We assembled the Bicycles in his Garage. Before we Rode away he suggested we drive thru Harlem just son we could see it... Halfway thru, a Radiator Hose Burst on his Car Spewing STEAM Everywhere... a Local man Shouted "Fuego! Fuego!" - Thankfully we were able to pull into a Gas Station that Had a Hose... and We Were able to Leave... Safely... It was Odd that He Thought we Ought to Visit Harlem... Like a Cultural Awareness Trip... Or Something...
The Man, Guy Something 'er Other Worked as an Architectural Designer and He Designed the Lobby of Corning Glass Works... Many Cubes with Glass Products Painted on each Face and Stored in a Matrix of Cube Holders. That Way They Could be Rearranged at Will to Show Different Glass Products Every Day... Sadly there are No Photographs of this Installation on Google Image Search... or I Would Show You What It Was Like...
anyway... During the 1980s I Visited the Museum of Glass in the Town of Corning. I remember they had a Giant Telescope Mirror and a LOT of Corningwear... Dishes that Could Stand The Heat in an Oven... They Were Famous For Cooking Casseroles... and they Had a Movie Called "The Story of Glass"that explained History... What I Remember was it had a Soundtrack of Extremely Bad Synthesizer Music... I was playing the Synthesizer at that time and Thought, DANG! I Play better than That! Maybe I Could Sell Recordings for Industrial Flims Myself... But That Never Happened... Leon, a Guy in Our Band (Solarwind) took a Demo Tape to NYC but No Sale...
Then we rode our Bicycles Out of Nyack and Towards New Jersey. I Had Assembled Her Bicycle WRONG and the Rear Tire Rubbed against the Brake Shoe... a Bad Way to Start an EPIC Journey... However, it was easy to Fix once I Was Alerted to The Problem. We Rode about 20 to 50 miles a day thru Farmland of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland... Sleeping at Campgrounds and on Private Farms...
Years Later My First Wife, Jo Ann and I Moved to Washington DC and It was a Short Drive to New York City... A Co-Worker quit the Job at the Agency and Moved Back to Manhattan... We Went to Visit and She Gave Us an Insiders Tour... We Went to an Authentic Italian Restaurand where they had a Lady Singing Opers in Italian as she wandered between the Tables...
We Also Decided to Go to The World Trade Center because on TOP there was a Bar with Excellent Views... We Were Quite a Distance Uptown co we Called a Cab and I Said: "I'll Give you an Extra Twenty if You can Get us there before Closing Time." - Challenging a NYC Cab Driver to Drive Fast! - We Made it... Sadly, Gentlemen were required to wear Neckties and Dianne's Date and I were NOT Allowed to Go Up there... So we waited at the Bottom while the Ladies went up... "Hey, It's not our problem that they won't let you in. Were going UP!" So I never Made it to the "Windows on the World" and on 9/11 all three Buildings Fell Down. WTC1, WTC2 and WTC7...
I went to The Guggenheim Museum. On that day there was an "Interactive" Giant Foam Sculpture on the Floor in the Center... With Places Carved out for People to Lie Down In... and Look at the Ceiling... Later I rode the Elevator to the Top and Walked the Circular Ramp Down... admiring the Paintings and Sculptures...
In the 1980s My Friends Ken, His Son Ken, Mark and I went to Visit the Museum of Holography.
The Kiss Holograph
That was an art form that had recently been invented and the Only place we could see it was in New York City. Basically, it was a Clear Piece of Plastic that Projected a Rainbow Colored Three Dimensional Image of a Person blowing a Kiss... and as I Viewed it from Different Angles her Hand Moved Close to her Lips and then Far Away...
Magical!
On that Trip I got a Speeding Ticket on the Jersey Turnpike. 75 MPH Speeding? Of Course, most people were driving 75 or Even Faster... The Policeman waved over Five Cars at a time and Wrote Tickets... I refused to Pay and Learned that The State of New Jersey and the State of Maryland Have "Reciprocity" which means that when I went to renew my Registration, they refused until I Paid off my Ticket and a Fine... I also learned that the State of New York Does NOT Have "Reciprocity" because I Have an Unpaid Speeding Ticket there also...
~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~

and then One Day I decided to Go See the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden... I didn't have a Ticket but was able to find a Scalper... I drove my Car and Parked in the Long Term Parking at Newark Airport. A Convenient and Safe Place to Leave a Car... Better than on the Island of Manhattan... Took a Bus to The Show... Had a Great Time... Met some people called "Wharf Rats" who had a Table set up promoting a Clean and Sober Lifestyle... I guess that even in the Late 1980s I had an Interest in That...

After the Concert I walked Downstairs to Pennsylvania Station - Trains and Many Restaurants, Gift Shops, News Stands... etc etc etc... It was as if the Entire Party had simply moved Downstairs... I got a Train to New Jersey and a Taxi to the Airport...

I was feeling Optimistic and Energetic so Instead of Driving Home, I Drove to Boston... Arrived in the Early Morning and Camped at a Campground near Lexington and Concord... The Next day I Took my Acoustic Guitar to Walden Pond... I wrote some Chord Progressions for some Lyrics that a Young Girl had Written in My Songbook. I didn't have a pen to write them down so I lit a Twig on fire and used the Charcoal to Write...

During the 1990s, When I Worked at the USPS Engineering Center, A Co Worker asked if I would Drive to a Hindu Wedding in the Bronx... I Said Yes and So: A Hindu Man from Guayana named Locknut Dewandan and Leroy Brown, a Black Man from the USA and I Travelled to New York City. The First place we stopped was at Leroy's Mother's Apartment. She was the Owner of a Rastafarian Bar. She said we couldn't Visit It because the Air Conditioner was broken and she had pride of Ownership... Come Back on another day when The Bas is Presentable...

So We wnt to an Apartment Building that was 100% Hindus... With a Temple in the Basement... Almost Everyone was a Recent Immigrant from Guayana, South America... a Former British Colony... Long Ago The British Gathered Indians from India to Work in the Sugar Cane in Guayana... Somehow Slavery was Ended and It Became a Country of Its Own... They had No Knowledge of Jim Jones. He was Just a Crazy Amarican...

The Family had the Groom sit on a Blankey wearing a Loincloth and spread Saffron on his Body... He had a Bad alergic Reaction so they washed it off... Just another Ancient Religious Ritual that Actually Makes No Sense... We Sat Around the Apartment Eating Home Cooked "Sacred" Rice Dishes... After I Had Eaten Enough and was Refusing to Eat any More... they Kept On Serving it and Trying to Get me to Eat More and More and More... Because it was "Holy" and Refusing Food was an Insult to The Family... I Refused anyway and they Gave Up...

On the Night before the Wedding Many of Us went to a Hindu DISCO and Danced to Indian Music... It was Excellent! Modern Music with Electric Guitars, Synthesizers, Drum Machines but Obviously Indian Vocals and Melodies... The Young Women were Very Attractive... A Great TIME!

The Actual Wedding Ceremony Happened in the Basement with an Old Lady Playing Drums... and Chanting... Of Course the Ceremony was Spoken in a Foreign Language... Then We Ate More "Sacred" Food and Listened to a Ghetto-Blaster Turned up Very Loud - So Loud the Sound was Horrible Distorted...

At Night We Walked the Young Ladies from One Apartment Building to Another because It was Just Too Dangerous for them to walk Unescorted... Wonderful Place, The Bronx!

Strawberry Fields. A Memorial to John Lennon In Central Park near the Dakota Apartments. I Did Not Know that I was Approaching a Sacred Space but as Soon as I Entered... I Felt a Holy Mood... All the People were Silent and their Eyes were Looking Down... I Didn't Know Why until I Stumbled upon the Word IMAGINE in a Tile Mandala... Then Everything Made Sense... Except for WHY That Guy Murdered John Lennon... That Makes NO Sense... Never Will...

Almost Everyone Knows What They Were Doing on New Years Eve 1999... Y2K... Where Were You? What Were You Doing?

I was in a Cheap Motel Room watching VH-1 Behind the Music... Drinking Heavily... They Broadcast about 6 Hours of That Show... AND I MISSED GOING TO AN AA MEETING THAT NIGHT. That must have been an EPIC Event... Our Plan in the Event of Global Economic Collapse was for Celia and I To Go Live on Her Mother's Farm - Way Out in the Country...

Mark: you didn’t miss anything

Me: What did you do?

Mark: haha not much I think I just stayed home

Me: You Don't Know? Gee, to me it was an Important night. Y2K was a Global "Thing" - Thankfully, all the COBOL Programmers Came out of Retirement and Reprogrammed the World's Computers...

 Mark: yeah it was. You would think I would know. Yeah the Y2K issue turned out to be a lot about nothing

 Me: Due to The EPIC LABOR of COBOL Programmers They Averted Catastrophe - My First Wife Got a LOT of Free Lance Work that year... They Recognized that there was a Problem, Figured out what the Solution was... and Did It... and the Public knew nothing about it... they all thought it was HYPE...

 Mark: haha yeah I knew a lot of programmers too it did feel like hype.

Steve: I was drawing caricatures at Canyon Oaks Country Club.

 Kathi: I was working in an Irish pub serving beers...we were SLAMMED! Lol

Tracey: I was a kid and it was stupid. The end.

 Sandy: I was in Hollywood! My now-ex-boyfriend and I were staying in a motel room on Sunset Blvd, and we had big plans to go out the following night because there was a club that night that we drove all the way from San Jose to go to. We didn't want to go out on NYE because places would be too crowded, so we stayed in the motel and drank champagne. Then at midnight, we drove to where we could see the Hollywood sign, because they lit it up for the millennium.

Brett: I went to a concert hall where my uncles were playing music, it was an eagles or something or other, one of those shitty club bars lol, but I was like 18, lots of friends and family were there who are no longer with us. We all got hammered, I don't know if there was a sober person in the place. My brother fell down and tried to hold on to a table with like a hundred drinks on it and tipped it over lol. Good times.

Me: I guess You Partied Like It was 1999... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rblt2EtFfC4

Deborah: I was celebrating with my 3 young kids.....informing them about History and all kinds of various things other countries did to celebrate the "new year"....We watched all kinds of educational things on TV...Their Father had fallen asleep on the couch - so we covered him in Glitter to celebrate the date....It was a good night! LOL...♥️

Tim: Broadcasting the end of the world show on F.A.K.E.Radio

Travis: I was at the Pontiac silver dome watching Metallica, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent.

Shivendu: At home with family.

Stevie: The Stevie Cook Band was playing a new years show at Feather Falls Casino. Right about midnight all the power went off. We thought "Oh no, this Y2K thing really happened!" It turned out that a car had run into a power pole.

Ken: Shiiiiid idk wat I was doing last week 😒

My Alcoholics Anonymous "Share" - "Hi, I'm Greg and I'm and Alcoholic..." Since We Can't Actually GO to a Meeting... I'll Do This Online...

I got into AA in 1999... I was Drinking Too Much and Spiraling Out of Control. "Just by Coincidence" I was Experiencing Many Bad Events... I Got Fired at Work, Got Evicted, Got Injured in a Fight... Became Homeless... and... Started Going to AA Meetings in Chico, California... It Truly Saved my Life.

At AA I was able to Get Some Great Advice. One Lady Taught Me How to Apply for Federal Student Loans to Pay for College. FAFSA - Another Recommended Humboldt State University in Arcata. A Place I Had Never Heard Of But... IT'S MAGICAL! I Studied Computer Science for Four Years paid for by Student Loans and Graduated with a BS Degree. One of my Classmates was Also in AA and He Graduated a Year Before Me and Helped Me Get A Job... After Graduation, I was Immediately Hired at the County of Humboldt Working at The Welfare Office. USING MY COMPUTER SKILLS. I Worked there for Seven Years and Retired with a Pension.

One Blessing of Being a Member of Mom's AA in Chico is that I Became Friends with Many American Indians. They often invited us to Pow Wows and I Got to Dance as a Member of the Tribe. I Had a String of Sleigh Bells That I Wore on My Ankle While Dancing and Those Bells Absorbed the Good Vibrations of the Pow Wow. I Used them for Many Years at The Office I Worked at to Signal the End of the Workday... Just Like Fred Flintstone Has a Whistle, I Rang the Bells and Said Loudly: "STOP WORKING!" - Another time we went to a FIVE DAY Christian Tent Meeting put on by the Tribe. It was a 206 Drum Ceremony. 200 Hand Held Frame Drums and SIX FATHER DRUMS. I Got to Play the BIG Father Drum with Six Other Men and... A Song Magically Appeared in my Head... Later That Night I Wrote Down the Words and Figured out Guitar Chords... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7uD_aWmymg

The Hall "Mom's AA" in Chico was in a Vacant Restaurant attached to an Old Motel... We had Four Meetings a Day Every Day... I Liked to Go Pay my Guitar and Sing at Times When We Were NOT Having a Meeting. For Example: Many of Us Ate Dinner at The Jesus Center Free Meal and The Walked Down the Street To The Hall. Where it was COOL... and We Served Free Coffee... So for an Hour we would sing Folk Songs, Then Have an Hour Long Meeting and then ANOTHER  hour of Folk Songs ANOTHER MEETING and Then Sing Until We Went Home... For People That DID NOT HAVE A HOME, they often spent the Night... I Do Remember Playing "THE TIME WARP" and Having Pretty Women Dance... THAT'S BIG FUN... and a LOT more fun than Drinking...

****** (~);-} ******

Another Time I Rode the Greyhound Bus to RENO with the Goal of Going To The BURNING MAN Festival. I Did Not Own a Car so... the Last Few Miles were Going to be Tricky... I Went to an AA Meeting and During My "Share" Asked if anyone was Going to Burning Man and Could I Get a Ride. Everyone Recommended NOT GOING and They Suggested that I Go to an AA Convention at the Hilton in Sparks... I followed their Advice and Not only was there an AA Convention but there was a Bar-BQ Contest in the Parking Lot with a Janis Joplin Imitator Band that also Played Grateful Dead... I Had a Lot of Fun and DID NOT RISK MY LIFE FROM DYING OF THIRST IN THE DESERT... As Was Likely to Happen at Burning Man... Since I Did Not Have a Car Filled with 5 Gallon Jugs of Water, Food, Sunscreen, a Tent etc etc etc... Later I Saw that Same Band at the HYATT Incline Village on Lake Tahoe...

One Blessing of Being an AA Member Was the Fact That we Had Many Wonderful Parties to Go To. I Remember a New Years Eve Pot Luck at the Recreation Center in Bidwell Park. Since we Had Two Large AA Groups in Chico and Another One in Paradise We Could Afford to Rent a Large Hall and Play Records... When I was Drinking I Drank Alone... All of a Sudden I Knew Many Women... and I Married One... Great!

The Other Advantage Was That Joining AA Helped Me Survive. When I was Drinking... I Just Happened to Have My Foot Run Over By a Small Truck While I was Leaving Madison Bear Garden at 2 AM... Ouch... I Had to Use my Bicycle as a Wheelchair for a Couple of Weeks..

I remember FM Radio Quadraphonic Broadcasts of the Grateful Dead New Years Eve Concert in 1976... I was lucky enough to Get in to the Cow Palace Show in 1975... Carlos Santana played Up Until Midnight... then Festivities/Celebration... The Dead Started Playing After Midnight...

They Broadcast the stereo Front-Left and Front-Right sound on ONE Radio Station... and they Broadcast the Rear Left and Right on a Different station... If you owned Two Stereo Radios you could listen to True Quadraphonic Sound at your Home... The Reason they did this was that Tickets for New Years Eve were very difficult to get and Many people could not get in... BUT... We had a wonderful time at Home with all our Friends...

I'm a big fan of Lyricist John Perry Barlow... He wrote "Estimated Prophet", "Throwing Stones" and "I Need a Miracle" and others... Great Meaningful Songs that Make you Think...

He also helped found the EFF, Electronic Frontier Foundation... an Internet Freedom of the Press Organization...

Here is a Newspaper Article about Him and Julian Assange... Founder of Wikileaks...

An Obituary...
Tech Utopianism And Our Walled Gardens: Is It Time For A Jailbreak?

https://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2018/02/12/585110447/tech-utopianism-and-our-walled-gardens-is-it-time-for-a-jailbreak

John Perry Barlow, who died last Wednesday at 70, was one of those unusual figures whose obituaries find no point of common agreement. An Internet evangelist who once wrote song lyrics for the Grateful Dead, Barlow was also a poet, activist, cattle rancher and corporate consultant, whose peripatetic career defied easy summarization. Billboard wrote about his music career; Wired about his Internet activism; Wyoming's Casper Star-Tribune about his boyhood on the Bar Cross Ranch. Barlow, louche and charismatic, had an astonishing number of friends, and their testimonials suggest a man with a taste for the good life and a certain facility for bulls***. No one seemed certain of Barlow's place in history, or how to answer the tougher questions: Is Barlow's utopian futurism still relevant? Was his work as an activist defensible? Was his music any good? But as writers struggled with the complicated legacy of John Perry Barlow, most readers, I suspect, had a different question: Who? Don't worry: Unless you enjoy suing the government, or were in the tapers' pit at Fillmore in 1976, you are forgiven for not knowing who Barlow was. Born in Wyoming to a family of cattle ranchers, Barlow showed early promise as a writer, garnering a significant advance for his first novel shortly after graduating college. He never finished it, instead discovering LSD and living for a time on an Ashram. Although he retained, throughout his life, the laconic drawl of a cattle hand, Barlow's intellect and charisma permitted him access to an extraordinary range of acquaintances, including Bob Weir, the rhythm guitarist for the Grateful Dead. In the early '70s, when Weir was feuding with the Dead's primary lyricist Robert Hunter, Barlow was temporarily brought in to replace him.

A Review of his Top Ten Songs...
 https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/02/08/john-perry-barlow-remembering-his-10-greatest-songs

“Cassidy”: The Weir-Barlow duo was never better than on this memorable tune originally released on Weir’s first solo album, 1972’s “Ace,” and then on 1981’s “Reckoning,” 1990’s “Without a Net” and other Grateful Dead live efforts. The song was reportedly named after Cassidy Law, who was the daughter of legendary Grateful crew member Rex Jackson and Weir’s close friend Eileen Law. Also check out the great version Suzanne Vega does on the Dead tribute album “Deadicated.”

 “Mexicali Blues”: It’s believed to be the first Weir-Barlow collaboration and it’s definitely a keeper — a rambling cowboy tune that owes a debt to Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” (which the Dead often covered).

 “Throwing Stones”: One of the standout tracks from 1987’s “In the Dark,” “Throwing Stones” is a definite nominee for the best song the Dead created during the later part of its career — a powerful rocker addressing social concerns.

 “Estimated Prophet”: The song provides a mesmerizing start to 1977’s “Terrapin Station,” kicking up a dust of psychedelia that still sounds satisfying to this day.

 “Hell in a Bucket”: It’s another great rocker from “In the Dark,” which formed a great one-two punch with “Touch of Grey.”

 “We Can Run”: Barlow collaborated with Grateful Dead vocalist-keyboardist Brent Mydland on a number of songs for the band’s last studio effort, 1989’s “Built to Last.” This passionate number addressing environment concerns might be the best of the bunch.

“Black-Throated Wind”: Another keeper from Weir’s “Ace” album, which is thought of as de-facto Dead album since the rest of the band backed Weir on it.

 “The Music Never Stopped”: This song from the Dead’s eighth studio album, 1975’s “Blues for Allah,” became an anthem for the band and, especially, its fabled fans – the Deadheads.

 “I Need a Miracle”: Speaking of Deadheads, the title of this song became the ultimate catchphrase for anyone needing a ticket to a show (sold out or otherwise).

 “Weather Report Suite”: Barlow contributed to this magical musical epic that brings the Dead’s sixth album, 1973’s “Wake of the Flood,” to a satisfying conclusion.

 “Looks Like Rain”: Our final pick from “Ace,” which was a highlight of Grateful Dead shows for years.
