The sole remaining nuclear power plant under construction in the U.S. is facing mounting opposition from cities and lawmakers concerned about its rising costs.
March 22, 2019 The Trump administration on Friday doubled down on its backing of Georgia’s troubled Plant Vogtle expansion project, approving billions of dollars in new federal loan guarantees.
U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry (NOW RESIGNED IN DISGRACE) and other state and federal officials came to the site south of Augusta to offer support for the only nuclear power project still underway in the nation. Though the project is already billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule, Perry announced finalization of another $3.7 billion in financing guarantees that had been conditionally committed earlier. That’s on top of $8.3 billion in earlier loan guarantees made during the Obama administration, for a total of $12 billion in guarantees backed by taxpayers.“Look around you. This is the real ‘New Green Deal,’” said Perry, referencing the Green New Deal, a Democrat-led initiative to cut fossil fuels use, battle climate change and, in the process, boost jobs. “That’s what we are looking at here, folks. This is America. This is what we can do together.” [Throw Billions of Dollars to The Super Rich to Build Obviously Failed Technology]

Nov 23, 2019 Georgia Power’s nuclear expansion of Plant Vogtle is falling further behind schedule, according to a filing Friday by Georgia Public Service Commission staff and consultants. Unless performance improves considerably, the latest deadlines for commercial operation of two new reactors by November 2021 and November 2022 are “significantly challenged,” according to the filing. It also flagged safety risks for workers. The project is already years behind its original schedule and billions of dollars over budget. More delays could add costs. And if the price tag rises, electric consumers in much of Georgia could be at risk of increases in their monthly bills. Ultimately, elected members of the PSC will decide how much of the costs get passed along to Georgia Power customers. Many electric membership corporations and city utilities in Georgia are also connected to the project and will have to make decisions about how to recoup costs.
