Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was marked by an energetic and contradictory era in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. He is considered one of the representatives of the "Silver Age" of Russian art, an era that brought an unprecedented heyday to the visual and performing arts as well as to literature and music. The interests of the artist included music (he played the violin himself), the study of mysticism and occultism as well as a taste for Russian folk art. He also dealt with the doctrine of the harmony of colors. It is exactly these manifold impulses and feelings that flow into his work and culminate in 1911 in the painting "The Last Judgment / Composition V". Today, this is regarded as the first abstract image of modern art history.

Wassily Kandinsky was born in 1866 in Moscow, Russia and died in 1944. He is well-known for creating abstract paintings. Abstract art uses shapes, lines and colours but doesn't need to look realistic. Wassily Kandinsky loved music and could play the cello and the piano. His paintings were even inspired by music.
He literally saw colours when he heard music and heard music when he painted. This is a rare condition called synaesthesia.

So I put a bunch of effort into thinking about really Pleasant things... Like swimming in Butte Creek, or hiking in Yosemite... Or that fabulous bus ride in Yosemite... It's a two-story bus with the top floor open to the wind... And we were all high on LSD and so that's one of the most miraculous events in my life... I also went to many Grateful Dead concerts high on LSD and that's Entertainment... They design their concerts for the people who are tripping...
