and now I see on CSPAN that the House of Representatives is considering allowing Oil and Gas mining on Federal Land. The hearing had representatives from the corporations but I didn't see any environmentalists. There is a lot of money to be made for the State government and the corporations. New executive order by Trump allows Mining on National Monuments and they are moving ahead with drilling without any concern for the people who live nearby.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in April that called for the U.S. Department of the Interior to reexamine the designation of 27 national monuments. Many of these treasured places house archeaological splendors and extraordinary flora and fauna. Without the official national monument designation, these cherished sites across the United States could be subject to cattle grazing, logging and drilling, according to #27 Monuments project, headed by journalist and filmmaker Brent Rose, who wants to educate the public about what's going on and to drive people to the Department of the Inerior's comments page to voice their concerns before the fast approaching July 10 deadline. Rose is attempting to visit as many of the sites in the U.S. as possible and document the journey on Instagram.

“Today, California’s message to the Trump administration is simple: Not here, not now,” Brown said. “We will not let the federal government pillage public lands and destroy our treasured coast.”

Brown signed SB 834 and AB 1775, two measures that ban the State Lands Commission from approving permits for new wharfs, piers, pipelines and other facilities anywhere in state waters along the entire California coast from the shoreline out to three miles offshore that could be used to expand new offshore oil and gas production.

The bills — which were modeled on a local law passed by Santa Cruz city voters in 1985 aimed at stopping oil drilling during the Reagan administration — were a top priority for environmentalists in Sacramento this year. A similar proposal was blocked last year by oil industry opposition.

Secretary of Interior Zinke is Opposed to Protecting Land and in Favor of Corporate Profits. He Reduced the size of National Monuments in order to Enable Logging, Oil Drilling and Mining.

Secretary Zinke decided the Department of Interior should do away with a policy called “compensatory mitigation.” It was introduced to act as a give and take between extraction industries and environmentalists by asking companies to offset damage in one spot by funding conservation in another. For example, if a company wanted to expand its operation on public lands in one area where unavoidable damage to a stream was likely, the company might back a wetland restoration project in another area. 

Zinke's announcement came just a few days after the Trump administration said it wants to overhaul the Endangered Species Act (primarily to make it easier for companies to work in protected habitats), and environmentalists saw this as another move to hack away at protections in favor of industry.

This contributes to the veneer of legitimacy that enables them to keep expanding operations at a time of climate crisis and to stifle the demands for justice of those communities who live on the frontline of their destructive, polluting operations.
