A Friend Said: Hi Greg, Not sure if your local news covered a fire in downtown Weed. Apparently several old buildings on main street burned. Downtown was evacuated temporarily, but it was quite smokey. Got to be joke in there somewhere about Smoke in Weed.
And I replied:
I was buying gas in Weed, California... And I asked the guy working there if there was a good place to camp nearby... And he asked me: "What do you want? Like, a KOA with hookups or plain dirt camping?
And I responded: "I don't care! I'm a turtle!" Because I was driving around in my Ford Windstar Van with the mattress in the back... Just like a turtle, I carried my home on my back...
After I retired I drove 4,000 miles exploring the West... California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon and Washington State...
It gives me some insight into what's going on in Portland, Oregon... I've been there... And the thing I remember most was: I was trying to drive over the river to get to the State of Washington where marijuana was legal... and there was a huge traffic jam at the bridge going over the Columbia River... So when I finally made it to the weed store, I was still hyper and anxious... And I told the clerk that I really thought that the bridges over the Columbia Rivers sucked and traffic was a mess... And he said: "Oh yeah... We certainly know that... We live here!"
A little insight into the concept of Doom Scrolling... I find that the Faceborg algorithm delivers posts that always agree with my opinions... Zuckerberg has proved mathematically that people stay on Faceborg longer when they read messages that make it appear like the whole world agrees with me... The other thing I do with my computer is email my friends and family... We live far away from each other and it's really good to have daily contact with my brother... And to have a written record... I still have emails that my father sent me before he died and those are precious...

It creeps me out that twice this week I've been offered the opportunity to take a close-up picture of my face to accomplish a goal on the internet. I can tell that I made an obvious mistake back in the late 1990s by using my real name on the internet. Who knew that in 2025 the Secret Service would come around and interview me about things that I posted on Twitter... A friend of mine sells wrinkle remover cream for your face online and as part of the package you can scan your face and do a before and after comparison... Well I don't care about buying anti-aging wrinkle cream so I did not participate in this thing... The other wonderful opportunity is that instead of using a mouse to point and click on a website my Google Chromebook now has the ability to use my face to navigate... Well that seems like a total waste... And I wonder why do they want to know what I look like? Is facial recognition a new law enforcement tool? A way to find out if I'm a "enemy" of Donald Trump and a member of ANTIFA?
Recently in Europe, students have found a clever way to fight back against facial recognition cameras.
Not with hacking. Not with tech.
But with simple face paint and strands of hair.
By shading or covering the points AI uses to identify faces, they make billion-dollar surveillance systems go blind.
Authorities say it’s not allowed. Students call it self-expression. Either way, it’s proof that human creativity can outsmart artificial intelligence.
