The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 35-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, which escalated into an international crisis when American deployments of missiles in Italy and Turkey were matched by Soviet deployments of similar ballistic missiles in Cuba. Despite the short time frame, the Cuban Missile Crisis remains a defining moment in national security and nuclear war preparation. The confrontation is often considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.[3]
The current crisis with Turkey over Syria has raised questions, yet to be resolved, about the security of 50 U.S. nuclear weapons stored at Incirlik Air Base. These questions have been posed before, going back almost to the start of nuclear deployments in Turkey in 1959.
Declassified Map:
US Atomic Missiles Deployed in Turkey
Italy and Turkey accepted Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile bases. Italian and Turkish crews trained to operate the missiles, but Americans controlled the nuclear warheads. Two squadrons with a total of 30 missiles were operational at Gioia del Colle, Italy, by 1961; a single squadron of 15 Jupiters became operational at Cigli Air Base, Turkey, in 1962. Turkey regarded these Jupiters as a symbol of Alliance's determination to use atomic weapons against Russian attack on Turkey whether by large conventional or nuclear forces, although Turks had been most reluctant admit the presence IRBM's publicly.
Is it true that the United States of America had a secret missile base in Turkey during the height of the Cold War?
Yes. It was dismantled after the Cuban Missile Crisis, in return for the removal of Soviet missiles from Cuba. This quid-pro-quo wasn’t known by the American public until sometime later. This gave the world the impression that the Soviets backed down during the Cuban Missile Crisis and that the US gave Khrushchev nothing in return.
SEE? LYING BY THE US GOVERNMENT WORKED! I knew Nothing About the US Deployment of Atomic Missiles in Turkey...
The Truth Makes the Entire Event Seem Totally Different... Like: It's Somehow "OK" for the USA To Point Atom Bombs at Moscow but... The Instant the USSR Does the Same Thing... FREAK OUT!
