The big breakthru in Solar Desalinization is to use MEMBRANE purification and Pump the Water using Electricity generated by Solar Cells. Everyone is familiar with Membrane water purification because there is a Machine out on the Sidewalk in front of the Grocery Store that sells Gallons of Freshwater. Bring your own 5 Gallon Container and Fill it UP! We have obvious technology to Build Desalinization Plants All over the World to Water Crops. By definition, the Ocean is at a Lower Elevation than the Land... and so there is a big need for pumping saltwater uphill to the Farm.
NETAFIM Corporation is designing Water systems for Israel so they can grow more food using Less Water. Including Prickly Pear Cactus... Who Knew that there was a market for Prickly Pears... I tried to eat one when I was Camping Out near La Jolla and Gave up because it was just to difficult to pull out the Spikes... However, they have a Machine that does that Job.
