This Song was written at a time that we were living in Chico, California and were surrounded by a corral with 4 horses. We were also growing many plants including Morning Glory Flowers that eventually got so tall that they climbed up to the roof of the little house. The tomato plants produced an abundance of food... quite a miracle... especially to eat them hot off the vine... the earth in Chico is dark black and fertile...

We had a disaster in the living room of the Little House in Chico... We owned a giant three wick candle... And used it to heat the house in the winter... So I thought I could make it a little bit hotter by adding a fourth Wick... That caused the side of the candle to melt and all the wax drained out... And there was a giant ball of Fire... So I got a bucket of water and dumped on the Fire... And that caused a cloud of vaporized wax to coat the inside of the entire living room... No way you could ever paint the living room again... It was coated with incredibly tiny bits of Wax... But I put out the fire and we didn't die... And after we moved out of that rental... The landlord tore it down... It was just a tiny house for his daughter and she moved away... At first he rented it to us... But it became obviously unrentable once I destroyed the inside walls...

If you’re not a deadhead and wonder what all the fuss is about, Or more importantly if you’re a deadhead who never had the chance to live on tour- this is my perspective, and one that might surprise even hardcore fans. We had a purpose. I'm not supposed to expound on this part of it- but Bobby is dead and it’s about time. We can expose the files.

Bobby’s passing hit me pretty hard. Those who ~lived~ on tour lost not only an icon and his music, but we lost a place. A physical, mobile space that we called home. Most of us felt more at home on Dead lot than any other place in the world. There has never been its equal, before or since. I started in Atlanta in 1992, and ended in Eugene Oregon in 1995. I lived on the road nine months a year. During that time I have no idea how many shows I saw, how many cities, campgrounds, motels, mileage. Home felt the same no matter where we were, because living on Grateful Dead tour was the home itself. Shakedown was a community event. Think of it as a farmer’s market that turned the wheel of our economy. We literally, seriously had our own economy. You could say we lived on the L standard. If you lived it, then you know what that means. The basis and primary function of our society was to disseminate our special product, and turn on the country. Kids were tripping for two hundred miles in every direction every time we came around. Each small town ran out of L just was we were coming back again the next year.

If I remember the code correctly, if you heard the song “candyman”, which is a treatise of how to conduct our business, and “deal” in the same set- it meant feds were close, and stay low on the lot. This sounds dramatized I know, but -Please remember- Owsley made ALL the real L until the end. There has been an MK Ultra connection since the start. If you question the band’s connection to our mafia (and make NO mistake- we were a peaceful drug mob), Owsley is the proof of what i’m saying. The drug, the band, and select fanbase were the purpose of ALL OF IT SINCE THE VERY FIRST NOTE THEY PLAYED. They began to communicate with us in the early 70’s. For example (from the ‘90’s) - when things went wrong, listen to “Sugaree”. Them’s the rules.

Things like that are the key difference between tour kids and fans. I’m not being a tour snob, and I’m not putting one against another. Everything was about the fans. They legitimized our existence. We had a job to do. Fans who showed up for the weekend had the reach to touch every community in the nation, and created the basis of our civilization. And raged against an Orwellian inevitability! We just supplied the means. We had a job to do, and that job was equally as important as the music. Always was, since the acid tests. This ISN’T FOLKLORE. THIS IS REALITY.
The words in the music told us what to do. Not just how to do our job, but how to conduct ourselves in a civilized society of our own making. We were about dissent. We were about free thought. We were given the tools to enlighten our society and entwine them in the magic of the music, let them viscerally feel the foment of revolution, and become individuals.

Those who called Deadlot home feel it differently, because we were a different kind of fan. It was more than just a band or a rock star. Bobby was basically the vice president, and eventually became the president. He was the leader of our mobile society. He represented the last trace of home many of us have ever known, and will never know again. When Jerry died we lost a village. Today we lost a home. There will never be an iteration of the Grateful Dead ever again. It’s been a while since I’ve been home, and I’ll never be able to go back there again.
I am one of many citizens of Shakedown, in the province of Deadlot, in the country of Grateful Dead Tour. I will forever long to go home.

Even the corporate oligarchs are realizing now Trump is just as big of an idiotic, reckless, double-digit-IQ failure.

While I loathe Donald Trump with every fiber of my being, I do love the fact that he’s proven that everything folks like myself have been saying about the Republican Party and the conservative movement has been absolutely spot-on all these years.
They’re not concerned with actual Christian values. It’s impossible to follow the true teachings of Jesus Christ while supporting Donald Trump. His behavior and the words of Christ are the antithesis of one another.
Obviously, they’re not small government. You can’t be an advocate for small government when you support a president who wants to rule as a dictator, has ordered the National Guard to patrol many of our nation’s streets, and believes he can abuse the power of the federal government to force states into doing what he wants.
That whole “Second Amendment guards against tyranny” bullshit was always just that — bullshit. You don’t get more tyrannical than the vice president of the United States saying that federal agents have immunity to do whatever they want.
And we don’t really need to go too deep into the “free trade capitalism” nonsense. Much like Trump’s behavior and the words of Christ, you give up any stance that you’re for “free market capitalism” when you back someone whose entire economic policy is based upon tariffs and raising consumer taxes on every American.
Respect for the military? Not even close. Not only did Trump lie about a bonus for most of the men and women serving this nation (while they were paid, he didn’t pay for it from tariff funds — he took money meant for affordable housing for the military and repurposed it so he could take credit for something), he’s routinely shown that he has no problem displaying zero respect for any veteran who speaks out against him. We’ve never had a president show the military more disrespect than this draft-dodger.
Don’t even make me laugh about their supposed “respect for the Constitution.” Donald Trump is, by far, the most unconstitutional president in this nation’s history — an individual the Founding Fathers literally designed our system of checks and balances and co-equal branches of government to protect against should someone like Trump get elected.
And while they talk a lot about “freedom of speech,” that’s total bullshit. You won’t find a more anti-free-speech president than Donald Trump. The only “free speech” he supports is that which supports him and his ideas. Anything to the contrary he wants canceled and silenced.
I’m not sure I really need to even discuss the party of “family values,” either. I think a twice-divorced individual who’s cheated on every single one of his wives and has five children with three different women pretty much speaks for itself as far as those “values” go.
Same goes for the whole “respect the rule of law” and “law and order” propaganda. This is someone who pardoned over 1,600 criminals, frequently attacks the judicial branch when they rule against him, has pushed conspiracies about the FBI, and has effectively turned the presidential pardon into a pay-for-play scheme where there’s growing evidence he’s selling them to whoever pays him enough for one. We’ve never had a president who’s so blatantly shown he couldn’t give a damn about any rule of law outside of what he thinks is or isn’t just and legal.
We’ve known for a while that the party of “fiscal responsibility” has been a laughable bunch of nonsense. They haven’t had a president from their party balance the budget since Dwight D. Eisenhower in the ’50s. Furthermore, not only has Trump added trillions to the nation’s debt — he’s added more than any other president in history.
Then there’s the bigotry and racism aspects we’ve all claimed the GOP has backed for decades. This is the party that was reinvented by what’s known as the “Southern Strategy” in the ’60s, where they targeted white resentment toward Black people who were being given more rights. Now we have a blatant racist in Stephen Miller serving in a very powerful position within our government — someone who, if you put a Nazi war uniform on him, would look right at home. There’s no debate that Miller is an absolute racist. Hell, the GOP has become such a pit of racism that Elon Musk recently shared a post that literally advocated for white supremacy, and it wasn’t even a major headline. That’s how much racism has become accepted within the conservative movement.
The list goes on and on.
For years, people like myself have called out the contradictions and hypocrisy on the right — a group of people who claim to stand for something when their actions tell an entirely different story.
All it took was the right kind of lowlife piece of garbage to put it all out there on full display.
And Donald J. Trump is the perfect lowlife piece of garbage who did just that.

ICE agents and LAPD turned the beautiful city of LA into a war zone Friday evening. Heavily armed masked ICE goons ransacked a vibrant immigrant community, but they certainly weren't expecting the neighborhood to stand their ground. Hundreds of community members, workers, and activists overwhelmed ICE agents and had them corralled around the federal building. That's when Homeland Security and LAPD reinforcements arrived and deployed unhinged brutal violence we haven't seen since they beat Rodney King to near death.

Here, you can see LAPD and Homeland Security smashing a woman's skull and ribcage with the butt of their shotguns and police shields. These scenes are reminiscent of the most brutal military dictatorships from Iran, Egypt, or North Korea.

To be clear, our communities are being terrorized because the chief White House Nazi Stephen Miller is demanding 3,000 arrests a day, a number that would not only tank the US economy but make life uninhabitable across vast swaths of America's cities and rural areas dependent on immigrant workers and their families. Quite frankly any VISIBLE movement will be very pacifist. Part of it is optics for the public - remember Black Lives Matter? They died because of two main reasons. On the inside, it got corporatized (I don't want to get into it), and the public started seeing it as a violent riot. I know people who think that. The other part is dude best case scenario Reddit admins ban us. You really gonna organize anything technically violating the law, in a dictatorship, in a space public enough that people from other countries can access it? One that has a digital paper trail? I bet this sub is already on a watch-list somewhere.

Yesterday I identified incorrectly the messaging app newly fired national security advisor Michael Waltz was using at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday as the unsecure Signal app. Joseph Cox of 404 Media identified the app as “an obscure and unofficial version of Signal” from “a company called TeleMessage which makes clones of popular messaging apps but adds an archiving capability to each of them.” As Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo notes, this third-party app introduces even more insecurity into those White House communications.

Today I spent time organizing the many tabs I had opened over the past six weeks. When they were grouped by topics, what emerged was the story of an administration that decided from the start to portray President Donald Trump as a king, creating an alternative social media ecosystem designed, as Drew Harwell and Sarah Ellison of the Washington Post noted in early March, “to sell the country on [Trump’s] expansionist approach to presidential power.”

The team set out not just to confront critics, but to drown them out with a constant barrage of sound bites, interviews with loyalists, memes slamming Democrats, and attack lines. “We’re here. We’re in your face,” said Kaelan Dorr, a deputy assistant to the president who runs the digital team. “It’s irreverent. It’s unapologetic.” Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said their goal was “FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE.”

They are engaged in a marketing campaign to establish Trump’s false version of reality as truth. The White House has also brought into the press pool right-wing influencers, who are asking questions that tee up opportunities for White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to push administration talking points, which the influencers then amplify on social media.

Trump’s aspirations to authoritarianism are showing today in the announcement that there will be a military parade on Trump’s 79th birthday, June 14, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Second Continental Congress’s establishment of the Continental Army in 1775. About 6,600 soldiers, 150 vehicles, and 50 helicopters will proceed from near the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, to the National Mall at a cost of tens of millions of dollars.

Trump’s attempt to empower loyalists showed today in the news that the Trump administration has reached a settlement in principle with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the Trump loyalist who was shot by Capitol Police officer Michael Byrd as she tried to breach the House Speaker’s Lobby on January 6, 2021. The right-wing Judicial Watch organization had filed a $30 million civil suit on behalf of Babbitt’s estate. A 2021 internal review determined that Byrd saved lives.

The administration’s hunkering down in right-wing ideology showed as well in Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s public attack on U.S. ally Germany for declaring the German right-wing political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) as an extremist party that goes against Germany’s “free democratic order.” That designation is the result of a three-year investigation. It allows the government more leeway in monitoring the AfD.

Both Vice President J.D. Vance and billionaire White House advisor Elon Musk supported the AfD and backed it in a recent election. Rubio took AfD’s side today, writing on social media that that new designation was “tyranny in disguise.” He attacked the current government and urged Germany to “reverse course.”

The German Foreign Office responded publicly. “This is democracy. The decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.”

It says something about the Trump administration that the German government is lecturing the U.S. government about the dangers of right-wing extremism.

Molly Beck of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan spoke to reporters yesterday, threatening Wisconsin governor Tony Evers with arrest after the governor issued a memo to state workers directing them to check with a lawyer before turning over documents or other items to officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Evers said Republicans were mischaracterizing his memo, which did not direct anyone to break the law.

"We now have a federal government that will threaten or arrest an elected official, or even everyday American citizens who have broken no laws, committed no crimes and done nothing wrong," Evers said. "And as disgusted as I am about the continued actions of the Trump administration, I'm not afraid."

Yesterday, at an event for judges, jurists, and lawyers, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson spoke out against the attacks on judges currently plaguing the country. Judge Esther Salas, whose son Daniel was murdered by a man who came to their house looking for her, has been calling out the recent tactic of sending pizzas to the homes of judges or their children, making the point that right-wing opponents know where they live. Furthering their attempt at intimidation, the perpetrators have been using the name of Judge Salas’s son.

Judge Jackson began her remarks yesterday by saying she wanted to address “the elephant in the room”: the attacks on our legal system. Such attacks are not just on individuals, she said, but undermine the system itself. “Attacks on judicial independence is how countries that are not free, not fair, and not rule of law oriented, operate,” she said, and she told her colleagues: “I urge you to keep going, keep doing what is right for our country, and I do believe that history will vindicate your service.” According to Laura N. Pérez Sánchez of the New York Times, the audience gave her a standing ovation.

At least some of the administration’s intimidation is an attempt to cow opponents. It does not appear to be working.

Yesterday, about 1,500 lawyers and their allies packed the plaza outside Manhattan’s federal courthouse to defend the rule of law. According to Santul Nerkar of the New York Times, they held up pocket Constitutions, reaffirmed their oath to support and defend the Constitution, and chanted: “The rule of law protects us all. Without it we will surely fall.”

Speaking in front of the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., constitutional law scholar and U.S. representative Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said, “The whole country needs a constitutional refresher.” He recited the Preamble of the Constitution: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

On March 6, Trump issued an executive order attacking the law firm Perkins Coie, which has represented high-profile Democratic individuals and causes, by barring the federal government from hiring the firm, suspending the security clearances of individuals working for it, barring its lawyers from entering federal office buildings, and preparing to end government contracts with any of its clients.

Rather than back down, as several other firms did, Perkins Coie sued the next day. Today, Judge Beryl Howell permanently barred any enforcement of Trump's executive order, saying it “violates the Constitution and is thus null and void.” In her opinion, Howell noted that “disposing of lawyers is a step in the direction of a totalitarian form of government.” Trump’s executive order violated the First Amendment’s guarantee of the right to free speech, the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of due process, and the Sixth Amendment’s guarantee of right to counsel.

She pointed out that the fair and impartial administration of justice has been part of the U.S. since John Adams “made the singularly unpopular decision to represent eight British soldiers charged with murder for their roles in the Boston Massacre.” “I had no hesitation,” Adams wrote in his diary, because “the Bar ought…to be independent and impartial at all Times And in every Circumstance.”

Today, Riley Board and Dylan Tusinski of the Portland Press Herald reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state of Maine reached a settlement in the state’s lawsuit against the Trump administration after it froze funding to Maine education. The administration claimed the state violates the law because it allows transgender girls to compete on girls’ sports teams. Governor Janet Mills said she was following state and federal law and that Trump could not change the law by fiat. Maine attorney general Aaron Frey said the state had no choice but to sue in order to force the USDA to follow the law. The settlement restores the funding and establishes that the administration will go through the legally required process to pursue its policy.

When Trump tried to bully Governor Mills over the issue at a White House meeting in February, she told him, “See you in court.” Today she commented: “It’s good to feel a victory like this. I stood in the White House and when confronted by the president of the United States, I told him I’d see him in court. Well, we did see him in court, and we won.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi has launched a different lawsuit against the Maine Department of Education that would pull funding primarily from poorer students and students with disabilities. “That’s a separate complaint they filed a few weeks ago, it’s only a one-page complaint that cites no authority, no case, no law,” Mills said. “We’ll see them in court on that one as well.”

Finally, tonight, Trump’s apparent determination to dominate the news and to project an image of leadership is overlapping with his increasingly erratic behavior. After suggesting on Tuesday that he’d like to be Pope, tonight the president of the United States posted on his social media site an AI-generated image of himself wearing papal robes and a miter.

The average cost of one pound of ground beef reached a record-high of $5.80 in April, according to numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is up nearly 50% from five years ago.

Kirkland said he has been trying to absorb the price increases at the two butcher shops he owns near Fort Worth, Texas.

Kirkland says that a year ago, he could buy cattle for about $1,500 per steer. Now, he says the price has risen to nearly $2,400.

"$2,400 for one steer going into the feed yard, and then feed and everything else, transportation, everything else that gets involved in that," Kirkland said of the cost.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the Republican budget bill under consideration would trigger about $500 billion in automatic cuts to Medicare, the program that provides health insurance to around 68 million older adults and people with disabilities.

This is because Congress is bound by the statutory Pay-As-You-Go (“PAYGO”) Act, which requires any spending to be offset by automatic cuts, to avoid deficit spending. The automatic Medicare reductions are capped at 4% of its yearly budget. Therefore, the cuts to Medicare would total about $45 billion in 2026 and $490 billion between 2027 and 2034, according to the CBO letter. Unless lawmakers otherwise offset the deficit impact of the Republican bill or agree to waive the PAYGO requirements, the cuts would be automatically triggered.

Overall, the Republican tax bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, would add $2.3 trillion to the deficit over 10 years, according to the CBO.
