HEADLINE: 8 arrested March 18th in Freshwater tree-sit. Trees chainsawed to death.

Freshwater Clearcut Logging near Eureka, CA

This morning I drove to Beautiful Freshwater (near Eureka, California) to visit the Tree Sitters. There were 10 sheriff's cars and 5 highway patrol cars. I saw 3 people handcuffed and then put in a sheriff's van. One person down the road was handcuffed and in the custody of a different sheriff. This lady was wearing "press" dogtags and was complaining that all she was doing was taking photographs. There were about 40 people standing around, talking on cell phones and playing drums. I could hear the sound of chainsawing. Then a large tree fell over. It makes a tearing sound then a big thump and a wail arose from the people. When four highway patrol cars stopped in the middle of the crowd and turned on their spinning lights, I left.(I was afraid of the police...protect and serve...corporations) As I was walking to my truck I noticed another highway patrolman writing tickets. I asked a citizen what that was all about and he said "don't worry about getting a parking ticket, none of these people will pay them anyway". I am concerned about the highway patrol being there. THERE CLEARLY WERE NO HIGHWAY RELATED PROBLEMS THERE. What's up with parking tickets? We were in the middle of the forest.

We went to a protest to defend redwood trees today. There are 8 people that are camping at the top of redwood trees to prevent loggers from chainsawing the trees. The owners of the forest (Palco/MAXXAM) hired a guy (eric schatz)to climb up the trees and forcibly evict the trespassers. Then the Humboldt county sheriff's arrest the tree-sitters and send them to jail. Yesterday, there were 7 tree sitters and the police arrested 3 people. Then, during the night, 4 people went up. The grand total of people INCREASED. The loggers started chainsawing at the bottom of a tree that had people camping in it. This action enraged the crowd. We feel that if a logger cuts down a tree with a person in it that it is dangerous to that person. The loggers cut away a 2 foot circle of bark all the way around the tree. Someone said that was called "girthing" and the purpose was to kill the tree. My wife decided that some medicine was needed for the tree, so we went to the hardware store and bought a bucket of "tree wound" compound. It is used to seal the bare wood after pruning. We drove back to the ecology protest and she (with help from others) spread the healing compound on the bare wood. I got to spend a lot of time talking to a knowledgeable fellow named "Atilla". He said that the MAXXAM corporation has to cut down redwood trees in order to pay the interest on a giant "junk bond" debt. MAXXAM, a texas corporation, purchased the Pacific Lumber Company about 10 years ago in a hostile takeover financed by "junk bonds" that they got from Mike Milken. (remember, Ivan Boesky and Mike went to jail for wall street fraud) I saw on the News tonight that our governor, Gray Davis, has ordered the highway patrol to work 12 hour shifts to help defend the state of California from "terrorist" attacks. GEE, WHY WERE ALL THOSE CHPs OUT IN THE FOREST TODAY ? WHAT TERRORIST ATTACKS WERE THEY DEFENDING US FROM ? Atilla also told me why there were large trucks that look like they carry sand. They are used to haul gravel to build logging roads. After I left the protest in the morning, I drove way back into the woods and noticed large orange trucks with PALCO on the doors. The reason Palco hired a subcontractor (eric schatz)to do "tree service" is to protect themselves from lawsuits in case anyone gets hurt.
How to get there: From highway 101 traveling North, Take the Myrtle ave exit in Eureka and drive to Freshwater road. Take a right and then an IMMEDIATE left onto Greenwood Heights road. Drive 2 miles. When you see all the sheriff cars, you are there. From Arcata, travel south on 101 to Indianola cutoff. Take a left and drive to Myrtle ave. Take a right on Myrtle. Left on Freshwater road.

They Teach Black and White Photography at Humboldt State University... With FILM and a DARKROOM and Chemicals... A Truly Unique and Wonderful Experience...

to be in total darkness moving a roll of film from the camera into the specialized HOLDER used to dunk the film into the chemicals... quite a tricky manual dexterity process... and all the time My eyesight was hallucinating like a madman... outrageous flowing geometric patterns... and then there was the fact that more than half of the students were pretty young women... It's really fun to associate with them... Me being 50+ and them being 20+... and so many were "Organic Earth Mothers." My Favorite... 

The REASON we worked in Black and White was that COLOR is simply too complex. First learn B&W then move up to Color. The next semester we DID NOT do Color Film, we moved directly to Digital using Adobe Photoshop on a MAC.  Same Teacher... 

We also learned about shutter speed and blurring motion photography... so one day I walked out onto the Shoulder of Highway 101 and took a Picture of a Logging truck... It looked very ghostly because the trees and Guardrails were in focus and stationary but the truck was translucent.

In my Art History Class at HSU... I Drew a Picture of the Lady Sitting next to me... It Never Looked Like my Classmate but... It turned out to Look Like Grace Slick... so I emailed it to the Official Jefferson Airplane Website and they Posted it online... and Said Thanks! I was So Honored!

Simplicity Patters: I remember those... Mom made clothes including a Bell Bottom Sleeve Nehru Collared Shirt. I wore a bell necklace with it in 1970... I also had a thin Camouflage Jacket that I stitched a row of sparkling purple sequins up and around both sleeves... like Military Striping... Like Sgt. Pepper Beatles Uniforms... and I owned a giant Fake Fur Coat... Black, like I was a bear... and we bought Huarache Sandals in Ensenada, Mexico when My Family went there on Vacation.

Keep in Mind that... While it is Obvious that Marijuana should be legal... It might not be a great idea to ACTUALLY SMOKE IT. I've smoked weed off and on for 50 years and I've been happier during the NO WEED years... That's MY Experience, Yours May Be Different. Yes, Sex is more fun stoned. Yes, Food Tastes Better, Yes, Rock Music is DESIGNED to be danced to Stoned... BUT... I automatically start smoking at Dawn and stay stoned all day and all night until Sleep... All Day Every Day for Months on End... and then I took a driving Vacation to Nevada and LEFT THE WEED AT HOME... Because I didn't want to be in possession of an ILLEGAL Drug when I was stopped by the police. What I didn't Realize was that I remained Stoned for at Least a Month without smoking... and Experienced events that did not happen... They Call that Hallucinating. That's what I paid For and That's What I Got.

However, during these last two years of NOT Smoking... I recorded Fifty Five (55) Music Videos on Youtube of me Singing and Playing the Guitar... When I was Stoned I recorded Five (5) and those were not that great. I had difficulty with the timing and rhythm... as if my brain was experiencing difficulty looking up what chord to play next... EVEN ON SONGS THAT I WROTE. Yes, it is FUN to play while Stoned BUT... I just don't get much DONE... and too much foot-pedal hold on the piano... until all the notes blend into a swirling whirlpool of sound... Yes, FUN but NO Not A Great Recording. Too Mushy... and I published songs even when I made a mistake instead of making another recording... Ahh, Good Enough... Now I practice the Song and If I play it wrong, I stop the Camera and Try Again... Sometimes Three or Four "Takes"... and SOME songs are just too difficult but with enough work, maybe I get them. "Space Odyssey" by David Bowie is one that I find Difficult... But I'm Practicing...

I remember Redwood Summer... Earth First! Protests in Humboldt County... In the End The Taxpayers of California Bought a Huge Piece of Land and Made the Headwaters Forest Park. Thanks! It's Great! Better than the "Stumps of Mystery" - I was Living in San Jose at that time and Did NOT Participate in the Protests... and I DID NOT "Spike" Redwood Trees In San Jose... at the Corner of Lincoln and Willow... Not Me... It Was That Other Guy... "Lumpy the Biker" - (Not His Real Name) Remember DO NOT CHAINSAW Redwood Trees... Might be Dangerous! SAFETY FIRST!

I wish I Had Paid More Attention in High School English Class. Now that I'm Retired, I Write a Lot and Publish on a Blog/Social Media...

It would be really handy to Know Punctuation... I am really Confused because Punctuation in Computer Programming Languages Has a Totally Different Meaning... The Semi Colon is used to end every command... the DOT is Used Just before com in "Dot Com" etc, etc, etc... In English The DOT is used to end a sentence... and then there is CAPITALIZATION! I often use Capitalization to Express SIGNIFICANCE... Like, THIS CONCEPT IS VERY IMPORTANT! However, camelHumpLettering uses Capitalization to Mark the Beginning of a New Word When You Squish All The Words Together when Naming Variables... I justify My Bizarre Capitalization by Pretending My Words are a Guitar Solo and Capitalization is a Wah-Wah Pedal...

In English "/" Means Math Division... For Example: 5/4=1.25 or Alternatives... not a SUB FOLDER in a Disc Drive... http:// and... Why Do I Use So Many Triple dots?

Lucky For Me I Graduated fro College BEFORE The Invention of Smart Phones... Now People try to Use the Fewest Number of Letters Possible Because Entering Text is Annoying and Difficult... With a Typewriter or Computer Keyboard It's Possible to Use ALL TEN FINGERS... but on a phone Most people only use their thumbs... The Language is Now Filled with Acronyms... OMG, LOL, TMA, GTFO, IMHO and then The Reader Has to Look Up What the Acronyms Mean... TLDR... Just So You Know... TMA stands For Too Many Acronyms... DARPA, CIA, LSD, DMT, FBI, DOD, EIEIO... (~);-}

FUN Things to do in Eureka and Arcata, California. Photographs of Tourist Highlights. Madaket Ferry Boat Ride, Kinetic Sculpture Race and Music Students at Humboldt State University...

The Madaket is a ferry boat that retired when they built the bridge to Samoa... Now it has narrated cruises looking at Humboldt Bay... Mostly the North end and central part of the bay. We live at the South end. The captain tells us the history...

The Maritime Memorial for Sailors Lost at Sea.

We discovered a "secret" beach in Fairhaven that no one ever goes to on a boatride. As we passed Fairhaven on the North Jetty, I saw the beach and a road... later I looked it up on Google Maps and figured out how to get there. We were all alone except for a man in a kayak cruising by.

Other places to visit:

The North Jetty itself. Bring sensible shoes so we can walk to the end where the dolos are... be aware that sometimes the waves are so large that it would be dangerous to walk on the jetty... but you can watch from the top of the sand dunes.

Giles by the Bay restaurant in King Salmon. It is at the end of the small peninsula that is right next to our house. The restaurant is not spectacular but I often park there to walk around and look at the house, bay, boats... There is a good swimming/wading beach there. In the afternoons in the summer the water is warm enough to swim in... It's a bay... The Ocean is simply too cold.

Trinidad: Pier, Beach and the fabulous restaurant. There is a marine life museum and classrooms from Humboldt State. A great trip as they have working example of the Hydrogen Fuel Cells invented at Schatz Laboratory HSU. They are participating in radioactivity monitoring from Fukushima. In co-operation with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. http://www.humboldt.edu/marinelab/

(Take the Trinidad exit off of Hwy 101, head west on Main St., turn left on Trinity St., right on Edwards St., and right on Ewing St. as the road veers left.)

I looked at both active tree-sit ecology actions. Too long of a hike to get to where they are... and in my humble opinion... How can I really get excited about protesting logging way off in the woods? It is delicate balance between providing boards for construction and saving the trees... This ecology action does not motivate me.

Mattole: There is a great drive to the end of the road... but... it's trespassing for a mile or so... and that's too far. The drive goes from the Avenue of the Giants towards the Mattole river and The Lost Coast... Ending in Victorian Ferndale. This is a road that is NOT visible on Google Streetview.  Bull Creek Flats Road... in Humboldt Redwoods State Park... to Mattole road and the town of Honeydew... Out there is a Sobriety Retreat on top of a mountain with a giant cross made from two large trees... I took a picture there and captured the spirit of that moment... close to the clouds in a big wind...

The other Tree-Sit is at Strawberry Rock near Trinidad. Take the Trinidad exit and instead of turning left and going to Trinidad, go straight  ahead at the end of the off ramp and follow the Frontage road that parallels Highway 101 all the way to the end... That's where the trail starts... Link to a map.

Here in Eureka, CA there is a zoo in the middle of a redwood forest. There are wild bears that live in the forest and there are bears in the cages at the zoo... If someone would just let the caged bears go they could live in the woods with the other bears... unless they have been so institutionalized by convict life that they can't survive outside of prison. Sequoia Park Zoo.

This is a historic train in Scotia, California. A beautiful town completely owned by MAXXAM. [until they went bankrupt] Sort of like a stage set, it is entirely built of redwood lumber with columns made from entire trees with the bark intact. Come visit sometime and be sure to go on the factory tour. It is the largest building in California. MAXXAM did a corporate raider takeover using Michael Milken junk bonds and is proceeding to cut down old growth redwood as fast as possible and take all the profit and move it to Texas. After all the profitable trees are gone then it's time for bankruptcy... Just like they did with Kaiser Aluminum. and that's exactly what they did... now it's all owned by the Fisher Family [most famous for The Gap clothing stores]

My Truck and the Magic Bus

These pictures were taken behind the Bayshore Shopping Mall. Where there is a huge abandoned building that has been decorated by grafitti artists... It made me think of the CyberPunk science fiction novels by William Gibson where all the action takes place in San Francisco after the collapse of western civilization due to lack of oil. These machines would fit perfectly because they are entirely bicycle powered...

Bear Tales: Our family loved to go camping in the woods... and so, we met bears. Walk away backwards slowly and let them eat your Lunch.

We lived in Eureka on the edge of a forest that was about 5 miles to the next house. Many animals lived in those woods including bears, a fox, deer, raccoons and skunks. The only time I saw a bear was when I was standing in my kitchen looking out the window at the parking lot. The bear just walked slowly past and I was really glad to be indoors. That bear killed the neighbor's dog. I assume that the dog was annoying and barking at the bear... that's a mistake you don't do twice.

We enjoyed the deer so much that we bought a salt lick at the feed store. The deer really loved it as not only did it have salt but it also had seeds to eat. We put it in the meadow next door to the house and that's how we got to see the fox... In general, animals are afraid of humans but if you buy them Lunch... that's a different story.

Once a skunk came into the house thru the cat door and hid behind the record player cabinet. I took a roll of Christmas Wrapping paper and poked the skunk and it left without spraying. LUCKY!

We had three cats and they were free to go outdoors at will. I became especially fond of Shasta the cat. He was a disobedient large male cat. I am a disobedient large male human so we got along great. When it came time to go to the VET he and I would wrestle and when I won I put him in the cat carrier. It was not obvious that I would win the fight.

When he got really old he became blind and during the last week of his life he would walk forward until he hit a wall then turn right or left and walk forward until he hit another wall. He repeated this blind walk for hours... I had to clean my room so that there were not any corners because in a corner he became stuck... turning right or left did no good in a corner. So I walked around the house throwing away trash and straightening us the clothes on the floor etc FOR HOURS! It was as if Shasta the Cat was doing his "Forever walk" and I too was on the same wavelength... Sometimes he would lie down and not move and so I sat down and looked at him and I did not move. I was retired from work at this time so I had all the time in the world to meditate with my friend.

Eventually he walked into a storage room and hid under a pile of clothes and did not move. I assumed that he was dead but I wasn't so rude as to POKE him to find out for sure. A couple of days later he walked out of that room and continued his blind "Forever walk"... I figured that he had regained his health and so I went on a driving vacation to Chico. He died a couple of days later.

BUT, we had a very meaningful week together.

Shasta had a sister named Meadow that we got at work in Chico. Miss Vicki was working at United Healthcare as a Data Entry Operator and another employee had a litter. I was assigned the task of Naming the cats and I wanted to name them after the Native American Sacred Spring on Mount Shasta at Panther Meadow... Miss Vicki overruled the name Panther because one simply does not name a housecat - lion, panther, lynx, tiger - so they became Shasta and Meadow... Meadow is still alive.

A family of raccoons lived under our house. Evidently the bathtub leaked and it was a good source of drinking water. They really freaked out Miss Vicki as they made a scary scratching sound whenever someone would go into the bathroom.
