A lot of people are talking about the fact that it's the 30-year anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, so I thought I'd share my own memories of that day.

I was 20 years old on October 17, 1989, and I remember it like it was yesterday. The epicenter was in Los Gatos, my hometown, and where I was still living in 1989 with my parents. I was working at Wherehouse Records at the time, which was a chain of record stores. I worked at the one at the corner of Prospect Road and Lawrence Expressway in West San Jose. I was in a back stock room, and the room started to shake, and cassette tapes started falling on my head. Earthquakes usually only last a split second, so it was really scary when the room didn't stop shaking...and soon I realized that it wasn't just cassette tapes falling on my head, it was part of the ceiling. I remember trying to call my parents, but all phone lines were down. It took me forever to get home because all of the traffic lights were out. My drive usually took 10 minutes, but it took 2 hours that day. There were no cell phones back then, of course, but all phone service was out. Los Gatos had no power or phone service for 3 days after that. The other thing I remember was that it was during a really big heatwave, with temperatures over 100. I remember the night of the quake, I went for a walk around Los Gatos with a neighbor friend of mine, because what else could we do for fun with no power? We walked around Los Gatos and checked out all of the damage, and I remember it was super HOT. I remember the next morning, I went jogging on my usual route, along Highway 9 and down Quito Road, where I was able to see the damage to many of the beautiful homes in that area. I don't remember much more detail over the next 3 days while the power was still out. I remember I went to work the next day and helped clean up the mess in the dark, for no pay, and somehow I still ended up getting fired soon afterwards, and I always resented that even though I went on to get a job at Tower Records soon afterwards. I also remember that when phone service came back on 3 days later, the first person who called was my cousin Miranda, who, sadly, is no longer with us. I also remember my parents' china cabinet had come crashing to the floor, destroying everything that was displayed inside of it. After that, my dad bolted everything to the wall, and it's bolted to the wall to this day.

I was in Washington DC but my Father was at Home in Los Gatos. He said: We had a Rechargeable Flashlight plugged into the wall of the House for years where it would be easy to find in the dark... and that Flashlight worked for ONE DAY... but You couldn't recharge it in the wall because the power was out. He Said: LEARN! Get a Flashlight with Alkaline Batteries for an emergency.
