Music Video: "Yuba City" by U Utah Phillips - Classic Protest Song about "Invisible" Farmworkers... Nameless People... Chords and Lyrics and Behind the Music...

Me Singing This Song...

Yuba City by U Utah Phillips
(A Farming Town between Chico and Sacramento on Highway 99 in California...)
Based on a True Story...

 A                 E
I came into Yuba as soon as I read
   D                        A
Of all of those twenty-five hobos found dead
  A                       D
I came in to find out if one of the slain
            A           E           A
Could have answered to my brother's name
   A                        E
It might be your brother, I just couldn't say
   D                         A
We hire lots of floaters who work by the day;
    A                    D
Now I see his photo they might be the same
      A         E           A
But I never did ask him his name

           A                   E
Chorus: If I had a list and if I only knew
    E                          A
I'd write down their names and sing them to you
    A                    D
And when I got done, I'd sing them again
         A             E         A
So you'd all know each one had a name
 A                    E
He had a room and ran out on the rent
 D                       A
Hired on a crew, I don't know where he went
   A                  D
If I knew his boss, I might make a claim
      A          E             A
But I never did write down his name

   A                         E
He stopped for a drink every now and again
 D                             A
Didn't look no different than hundreds of men;
    A                          D
You know these old winos, they all look the same
   A         E           A
No reason to ask him his name
   A                         E
It might have been Shorty, a feller I knew
   D                              A
We bunked in the empties when the season was through
    A                         D
You know, I been thinking, it sure is a shame
  A         E           A
I never did ask him his name

   A                  E
We always abandon the old for the new
    D                      A
And second-hand people get thrown away, too;
  A                       D
I know it won't help, but still it explains
    A         E            A
Why no one remembers their names

We visited Yuba City Twice. Once for a Concert at the College by Anoushka Shankar... and the Other Time was Outdoors on a Hot Summer Night... Carlos Santana and The WHO...

Utah Singing the Song...

Behind the Music:

Juan Vallejo Corona (February 7, 1934 – March 4, 2019) was a Mexican serial killer who was convicted of the murders of 25 migrant farm workers found buried in peach orchards along the Feather River in Sutter CountyCalifornia in 1971. At the time, his crimes were among the most notorious in U.S. history. Until the discovery of Dean Corll's victims in 1973, he was the deadliest known American serial killer.

Victims[edit]

All of Corona's victims were middle-aged Caucasian male drifters between the ages of 47 and 64 (except 3), most of them had criminal records and all but one were stabbed or slashed with a knife or machete.

Martin, Patti and Vanessa moved to this new home in San Francisco in early 2004. They are quite close to Mount Sutro and can see Golden Gate Park off the back balcony.

It is a 4 story home and there are balconies on three of the stories. There is a garage which is quite a blessing due to impossible parking in the city.

Martin's San Francisco House 2004
The picture above shows Martin and Nicole sitting on the balcony with the park in the background.

Martin's San Francisco House 2004
This is the view that they see... It is absolutely stunning in person. The financial district is seen to the right, Transamerica Pyramid... You may have to scroll right to see the entire picture... This photo does NOT show the ocean and Golden Gate bridge that are off to the left... Nor does it show the Mount Sutro which is off to the right. The view is a little bit scary due to being so high off the ground. I think that is called vertigo. After a few minutes, I felt safe there... It is possible to climb up a ladder and get on the roof... It was too much effort for me to climb it when I visited, but the view should be astonishing. One time Martin and Vanessa had to go up on the roof to use brooms to sweep the water from a rainstorm off the FLAT Roof... and Prevent Leaking indoors.

Martin's San Francisco House 2004
Here are Nicole and Vanessa in the kitchen. I am standing on the floor above and peeking out of an inside window... Originally, this area was a courtyard but a previous owner roofed it in.

Sutro Tower San Francisco
This is the front of the home with Sutro Tower. It broadcasts television signals and is visible from my dad's house in Los Gatos... 50 miles away... We had a The Biggest Radio Shack TV Antenna installed on the roof of Dad's Home and We Were able to get all the TV Stations from San Francisco... In Fact, Broadcast TV Signals require "line of sight" to be received...
We Had a Rotator installed as well and Dad Could get Sacramento Stations as well...

Kitchen at Martin's house
Here is Dad, Patti, Vanessa and Bonita. The photo above with the checkerboard floor was looking down on this scene. This house seems to go on and on and on. Vanessa showed me all the rooms and some are quite different. There is a bathroom that is entirely covered with mirrors on all the walls. You can see hundreds of reflections of yourself. I have never seen anything like this except at the Smithsonian Modern Art Gallery... There is a walk in closet/crawlspace that is large enough to house another entire family. Since this place is built on the side of a steep hill, there are odd shaped nooks and crannies underneath. There is a piano room that has walls that are intentionally made NOT-PARALLEL so that the sound waves will echo in an acoustically pleasing manner. It also has movable sound dampening sections... Like a classical music concert hall...

I remember this house from my childhood. Especially the very high quality grand piano. It is on a hill near the University of San Francisco medical center between Sutro Tower and The Panhandle section of Golden Gate Park.

On a different subject: SE Said: I've always been fascinated by people who get married young. I find it really admirable that a person can know at a young age that they've met the person they want to spend the rest of their life with. I had several long-term relationships when I was in my late teens and 20's, but I was not at all ready to make a lifetime commitment at such a young age. I wanted to get married, but not until I was older and more mature. I worried that if I married too young, I'd end up getting divorced...and to me, it never made sense to take a chance on ending up divorced when I could just wait until I was older before getting married. I became more mature as I got older, and my emotions evened out tremendously. I cringe when I think of some of the ridiculous things I argued with my partners about when I was young, and I can't imagine arguing about such petty things now. I always assumed I'd marry around age 40 or so. By the time I turned 40, I felt more than ready to make a lifetime commitment to someone.
But what I never anticipated was the fact that the majority of people DON'T want to wait until they're older before getting married. The majority of people marry young. So when you wait until you're 40, there aren't very many single men left who are interested in marriage. The men who are still single after 40 are often single by choice, and they don't want to get married at all. Or, they're divorced, and now they're soured on the whole idea of marriage - which is exactly what I wanted to avoid by waiting until I was older before getting married. I didn't want to end up divorced and bitter, I wanted to stay single when I was young and then marry when I was a little more mature.
It's still hard for me to relate to people who were ready to marry young, and they got married young and stayed married. I really do admire that. My strategy of waiting until I was older didn't quite pan out the way I thought it would. If I could do it over again, I'd marry young and hope for the best.

and I replied: I got married at 21 and divorced 5 years later... then got married again at 45 and divorced 12 years later... Remember that there is a Financial commingling... During my second marriage she was applying for Food Stamps and CMSP (a medical insurance program paid for by the County of Humboldt) and IN THAT APPLICATION they wanted a copy of Her Bank Statement AND her Husbands Bank Statement... SO... We Got Divorced because I didn't want to provide MY Bank Statement... We Continued to live together as roommates...

SE SAID: I've also been hit on by married men on a couple of occasions, which proves to me that maybe it IS smarter to wait until you're older before getting married, otherwise you might find yourself feeling bored 30 years later, so you look to have a fling. But I find that to be pretty gross, and it's also insulting to me that any married man would think I'd even consider having a fling with him while he's married to someone else. I can't help feeling like they think that just because I've never been married, it automatically must mean that I'd be up for a meaningless fling. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Part of the reason I never married is because I have a lot of respect for marriage, and I would never dream of having a fling with a married man. Maybe if these guys hadn't gotten married so young, if they'd waited until they were older before getting married, maybe they wouldn't be bored and looking for a fling 30 years later.

Burning Man Wisdom Tale: "The Canteen" - Traditionally, at Burning Man, You Share Water with People You Meet. Hand the Canteen to a Person and They Hand it to Another Person and ALL THE TIME, You are Worrying... "Will there Be Enough Water FOR ME?" Well, What if YOU DRINK FIRST and Then Pass the Canteen to Your Friend... That Way, All that Time You are Enjoying the Pleasure You Gave Others Without Worrying about Running Out of Water and Dying of Thirst in the Desert. Remember: Take Some ME Time First. You deserve it. - Story by Sonya Sophia

Once, I was at a Rainbow Gathering in Idaho and I Drank the Last of My Water and I was a Long Way from My Campsite and It Was Night... I got Upset and Told My Friend about My Problem and he said: "Just Walk Over to That Kitchen Right There and Ask For Water, AND THEN JUST BLISS OUT! We will take care of You."  - and I Did Get Water and I Did Bliss OUT!

Are We Really Mortal? Do the Math. If you count up all the people who have ever lived since the Beginning of Time... More people are Alive than Dead... [Not Factually Accurate - I posted this story on Facebook and Learned Something from an Alert Reader] Statistically Speaking, the ODDS of Mortality Being Fact is Less that 50% - and then there is That Famous Question of Coming Back from The Dead... I did that Every Time I Drove Home from a Concert... At Least I Did that after Every Grateful Dead Concert... Jesus Did That Once and Everybody Said it was a Miracle... So, Every Day I Test my Blood Sugar and BY PAYING ATTENTION and Keeping a Sugar Free Diet... I Have Prevented Diabetes... I find that Quitting Smoking Tobacco AND Cannabis... Has Given me Better Lungs and a Clearer Mind. Weed is Useful for APPRECIATING Music, Art, Food... but  I Get More DONE Without Weed... More Music Videos, More ART, More Fiction Stories... Hey, Just because They Legalized Weed does not mean that I Have to Actually Smoke it... UNLESS I'M GOING TO A ROCK CONCERT... or some other Event that I Am Observing others Creating... How I Quit Smoking Tobacco: When my Brother Got Lung Cancer I Became frightened. Cancer Runs in Families and If HE Got It, I'm Likely to Get it Too. SO... I used Fear to Quit. I experienced Pain for about a Month from the Withdrawal Symptoms... I did not use any Medicine... Frankly speaking, That New Medicine has MANY, MANY, MANY side effects... and Nicotine Gum and The Patch Causes Madness in Me... Paranoia... It Shortenes my Anger Fuse... As if I was "Channeling My Inner Chewbacca."  SO... I Just Experienced the Pain and USED That Memory to Prevent a Relapse... I still WISH I Could Smoke But... Then I Remember HOW MUCH Pain Drug Addiction Causes...

Origin of the saying "Welcome Home" at The Rainbow Gathering-and an Art Show

It was told to returning Vietnam Veterans in 1971 who were not feeling welcome at home. Some were feeling like a Stranger in a Strange Land. Welcome Home, Brother... We LOVE you... I believe this is true because it was told to me by Mike Jensen while we were busy gathering rainbows.
