An anxiety disorder is characterized by feelings of worry, anxiety, or fear to an extent that interferes in daily functioning, and it is one of the most common mental illnesses in America. It affects 18.1 percent of the population every year, and although it is highly treatable, only 36.9 percent of those suffering receive treatment.
This is an area that has featured significantly in the EFT research studies. Because anxiousness is typically felt physically, tapping has become a useful strategy to calm the body.
One of the first large-scale studies involved 5,000 patients seeking treatment for anxiety across 11 clinics over a five-and-a-half-year period.
Patients were allocated to traditional psychological treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that included medication if needed, or acupoint treatment (precursor to EFT) with no medication.
Complete remission was reported by 76 percent of the patients in the acupoint group and 51 percent of the CBT group. Some improvement to complete remission was reported by 90 percent of the patients in the acupoint group and 63 percent of the CBT group. Those 90 percent of acupoint patients improved in an average of 3 sessions, compared to an average of 15 sessions for the CBT patients. One year later 78 percent of the acupoint group maintained their improvements, compared with 69 percent of the CBT group.
This study included an inspection of brain changes after treatment for anxiety. It was the first EFT study to do so and used pre-and post-treatment functional brain imaging (through computerized EEG, evoked potentials, and topographic mapping).
The images in the study show the shift of red (highly dysfunctional waves) to blue (calmer state) in the central and frontal areas of the brain. This corresponded with a decrease in anxiety symptoms in intensity and frequency. Patients who received CBT with medication also showed similar changes in their scans, but they took a longer treatment time to achieve this.
What is also very important to note is that at one-year follow-up, the CBT patients' scans were more likely to have returned to their pretreatment levels than the acupoint patients.

I am entering into a dark moon cocoon retreat, a 300 square foot room built into the earth tonight, May 10th, and will not emerge from complete darkness and sound deprivation until Saturday the 14th. I have dreamt about going into a dark retreat since I was in my 20’s. I didn’t have the tools or courage to face my fears… until now.

At the first EFT circle I attended, I tapped on chronic left hip pain and the feelings I was having around the pain. I found that I had been storing some unexpressed grief for my father’s death in that hip. The pain went away and was gone for weeks. It took some more tapping on other grief issues for the chronic hip condition to leave completely. My left hip now lets me know when there is some personal transition that needs love and attention through tapping, but for the most part it healed. This first encounter with the deep healing of tapping was astonishing and very welcomed. It opened up doors of possibilities that I still encounter in my varied work settings. In my own life, I have more confidence and can easily manage any emotional upset. For the most part, physical pain can be easily tapped away. I am looking forward to years of offering EFT to my community and friends and I know this would not be the case had it not been for the care and attentive teaching of Sonya Sophia. In her journey, through our town and our lives, she has left powerful tools and teachings to help guide and heal many of us for years to come.
