The algae bloom in the Reflecting Pool is likely caused by natural environmental factors rather than vandalism. Experts point to the combination of high temperatures and sunlight as primary drivers that allow algae to multiply rapidly.

There was a time when backing him could pass for an ordinary disagreement. Taxes, trade, the border. You could argue it out over Thanksgiving dinner and still pass the potatoes. That time is over. He has shown everyone exactly who he is, again and again, in his own words, on camera, without a shred of remorse.
Standing behind him today isn’t a policy preference. It’s a public announcement of character, broadcast to every country on earth, and the message is unmistakable: cruelty is fine with me as long as it lands on somebody else.
Nobody gets to hide behind “I just liked the economy” anymore. You watched him mock a disabled reporter. You heard him brag about grabbing women. You listened to him say immigrants are poisoning the blood of the nation. You saw a jury find him liable for sexual abuse. You heard him boast that he was the one who killed Roe. And after all of it, you still said yes. That isn’t loyalty. That’s looking straight at ugliness and deciding it suits you.
What I cannot wrap my head around, no matter how many times I turn it over, is the woman who cast that vote. The woman who walked into a booth and helped make sure her daughter would grow up with fewer freedoms than her grandmother had. Think about that. A girl born in 1955 came of age with Roe on the books. A girl born today, in a huge part of this country, does not. Fifty years of progress was erased in one ruling, by justices he hand-picked for exactly that purpose, and some mothers cheered.
These aren’t abstractions. Women miscarrying have been sent home from emergency rooms and told to come back once they’re sick enough. Doctors are afraid to treat patients because they might end up in prison. Families going through IVF have had to wonder whether their embryos are suddenly a legal battleground. Teenage girls are growing up knowing that the state has more say over their bodies than they do. That is the world those votes built.
I hear the excuses. “I’m not a single-issue voter.” “It’s up to the states now.” “That will never happen to my family.” It already is happening to families like yours, in hospitals like the one down the road, to girls who look just like yours. Rights don’t evaporate only for strangers. They vanish for your sister, your niece, your granddaughter, and eventually for the little girl who trusted you to protect her future.
One day she’s going to read about this era in a history book. She’ll learn when her freedoms were taken, who took them, and who helped. Then she’ll look up and ask which side you were on. Freedom handed down by your mother and grandmother is only safe if somebody bothers to protect it, and you’ll have to tell her that you didn’t.
With the arrest of an Olympian on a vandalism charge for touching a peeled-off paint coating piece in the Reflecting Pool, expect the imminent arrests of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for splashing through its water in “Forrest Gump.”
