This is an excerpt from an interview with Thomas Register on Howard’s Turn, a radio show hosted by Howard Rabinowitz. (He called it “Howard’s Turn” to try to make people think it was “Howard Stern.”) Thomas Register was a fire tower lookout who started writing an illustrated novel called Roscoe’s Revenge, to stave off the boredom of sitting looking out for plumes of smoke all day. In the novel, Roscoe became aware he could see his nose, which caused Thomas Register to realize he could see his. At first it pestered him to no end—that bulbous out-of-focus mound of flash protruding constantly into his field of view—but over time it came to serve as somewhat of a visual mantra, the dividing line between the “in here” and “out there.“
