The two most commonly cited sources of crime statistics in the U.S. both show a substantial decline in the violent crime rate since it peaked in the early 1990s. One is an annual report by the FBI of serious crimes reported to police in more than 18,500 jurisdictions around the country. The other is a nationally representative annual survey by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, which asks approximately 160,000 Americans ages 12 and older whether they were victims of crime, regardless of whether they reported those crimes to the police.

Using the FBI numbers, the violent crime rate fell 51% between 1993 and 2018. Using the BJS data, the rate fell 71% during that span. The long-term decline in violent crime hasn’t been uninterrupted, though. The FBI, for instance, reported increases in the violent crime rate between 2004 and 2006 and again between 2014 and 2016. Violent crime includes offenses such as rape, robbery and assault.

2Property crime has declined significantly over the long term. Like the violent crime rate, the U.S. property crime rate today is far below its peak level. FBI data shows that the rate fell by 54% between 1993 and 2018, while BJS reports a decline of 69% during that span. Property crime includes offenses such as burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft, and it is generally far more common than violent crime.

When I was Growing Up, Drinking Alcohol was Considered Socially Unacceptable. Peer Pressure said "Don't be a Juicer."

 It wasn't until the Late 1990s that I started Drinking, quickly became an Out Of Control Alcoholic, Joined AA and Quit. I still like going to AA Meetings... I spent about Five Years drinking and only suffered the Brain Damage for a Short Time. When we were Teenagers we had Marijuana and LSD and Drinking was something from my Parent's Generation... Not Cool. 

Ironically, when Marijuana became Legal, I quit. My brother got Lung Cancer and that REALLY SCARED ME so I quit smoking Tobacco and Marijuana... Now I Enjoy Deep Breathing Meditation... Breathe Rapidly and Deeply and MORE OXYGEN GOES TO MY BRAIN... I still like Coffee and Sugar... I'm High on Those Two Drugs Right Now and They Cause me to Think Up Ideas to Say...

I became bored with LSD... It Seems to Me That There Has to Be SOMETHING BEYOND ACID...

For Safety... Since ACTUAL crime is down... and Marijuana is Legal... Why not retrain the police to do something useful with their lives? They CAN become productive members of society. They could work as teacher's assistants in Elementary School. Tutoring Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Those "Brain on Drugs" advertisements seemed absurd to me... Until I understood that the Prohibitionist's marketing department had an impossible task... When you have The Beatles singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and Led Zeppelin buying a "Stairway to Heaven" ... gee, how do you compete with that?
