Humboldt Nuke Faces Dismantling By Jim Adams Twenty-two years after shutdown, PG&E’s Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant may become the first commercial reactor to be dismantled or decommissioned in the US. A major project got underway in September as the 250 ft. tall concrete vent stack began to be demolished. The utility has also announced its intent to remove 390 spent (irradiated) fuel rods from the pool at the plant, and place them in on-site steel containers called dry casks. For more than a decade, Redwood Alliance has urged PG&E to take this action. This will keep our community safe and allow complete dismantling to take place. Four miles south of Eureka and adjacent to Humboldt Bay, the Humboldt nuke sits on top of and close to major earthquake faults. The Alliance has worked since 1978 to make sure that the nuclear plant, one of the oldest and dirtiest in the country, would never reopen and will be properly dismantled.

Their jobs depend on a steady flow of oil out of the ground into refineries and into our gas tanks... and all that plastic crap that is polluting the planet... Plastic does not "go away" ever... and we already see giant swirls of floating plastic in the oceans... The People that are employed by Exxon, Shell, BP, Halliburton and Koch have vast pools of money that they are now using to buy advertising talent to convince you and I that it is "cool" to buy gas... and plastic...

an alternative to buying corporate crap is to simply reduce the amount you travel in a car... In my youth it was fashionable to drive all over the USA following The Grateful Dead (an American Rock Band)... really... people (including me) would drive 8 hours or more to attend yet another concert... I'm not making this up... Well, now days traveling places is not really needed anymore... We can travel using the internet to see what's happening on the other side of the planet... It's all this driving around that is causing Climate Change.

Of Course, we all have to drive to work every day... Unless we live close enough to the office to ride the bus... Twice in my lifetime I was able to ride the bus to work. San Jose has great bus/light rail service and so does Eureka, California. One advantage to riding the bus is that you meet people... and become friends with them. In my case I met some women on the bus. I like women and was glad to have their friendship. We would sit in the back and chat for a half an hour every workday. VERY Pleasant...

Quit buying Plastic Crap. I'll say it again... Quit buying Plastic Crap. Just look for an alternative... One thing that is absurd is all the plastic bottles for drinking water... why not drink the water right out of the tap? The answer is that often tap water is poisonous... Well, what we need to do as a society is clean up the water that comes into our homes... really... Remember that showering in poisonous water is as bad for your health as drinking fracked water... and a coke at Taco Bell comes in a plastic cup... why not a waxed paper cup?

and now for something Completely Different... Memories of a Burning Man Participant!

I've been thinking about the fact that this year marks 20 years since the first time I went to Burning Man. 20 years. I can't believe it's been that long. It makes me feel so old. I went to Burning Man 7 times starting in 2001. My last time was 2009. 2001 was magical because it was all so new. 2002 and 2003 were even more magical because I was more prepared. By 2004, I was an experienced desert camper who knew exactly what I needed to do to be comfortable out there in the desert for a week. I would spend all year accumulating supplies for the playa, and participating in different events in the local burner community in L.A., where I lived at the time, including camping trips on lakebeds in the Mojave desert, which have a similar climate to Black Rock Desert.

I do miss it sometimes, especially when I see posts from my friends who still go to Burning Man every year. I'm so glad I got to go at the time I did, when there was no cell reception out there and you really did have to take a break from technology while you were there. There was something really special about that. I remember the gigantic bulletin board where you could post a note for your friends. It was huge, and it was covered with thousands of notes...but that was what made it special. I always managed to locate the people I was looking for out there, despite the lack of technology, I always found people's camps through word-of-mouth. That was part of the fun, wandering the playa and trying to find people, and meeting other people in the process. Now I hear that people are walking around texting on their phones, and to me that seems like it would take away from the experience a little bit. Part of what made it special was the fact that you were out there in the middle of the desert, far away from civilization, and you had to adapt to this world without phones or technology, and you had to be prepared to survive out there for a week, with all the water and food you would need to get through, and it was so much fun meeting that challenge. I always prided myself on having water leftover at the end, and I also showered every day on the playa.

20 years. I just can't believe it.
