One of the high points of my life was performing "Uncle John's Band" at the Rainbow Gathering in Idaho. I met a young man and showed him the Chords and Lyrics that I had written down in my spiral notebook... After we played that song, he said: I don't want to learn any more songs, let's just play this one again...

We were sitting in the shade at the "Relaxation Station"... the very first place everyone walked past after leaving the parking lot... A lady was doing Tarot Card readings and we were passing around a bottle of TEA with some kind of stimulant in it... Someone told me it was ephedrine...  it did make me feel alert and optimistic... Since there was a constant flow of people walking by, it made perfect sense to Play the Same Song Again and Again and Again... Give the people what they want... 

There was a big meadow surrounded by forest and most people were camping under the trees. THEN... all of a sudden... the people out in the meadow were pointing up at the sky... dozens of people were talking excitedly and pointing at SOMETHING... So I stood up and walked out to the middle of the meadow and saw... a giant "Sun Dog" rainbow covering half of the sky. Ice Crystals at a Very High Elevation refracted the sunlight to make an astonishing display of colors... That's why everyone was cheering! This Gathering was near the Sawtooth Mountains... a truly miraculous place to camp...

On another day I played the Song "Aiko-Aiko" many times and walked all the way around 5,000 people waiting for dinner. They were sitting in a series of big circles... The Rainbow Gathering serves a big free meal every day in the afternoon. Everyone meets at Main Meadow and relaxes while the Servers dish up the food... Usually a Vegetable Rice meal... In theory, all a person needs to bring to the Gathering is a CUP... because many people put a lot of effort into buying and cooking and there are usually a dozen kitchens set up all over... The concept is that IF EVERYONE BRINGS FOOD AND SHARES, WE WILL ALL HAVE ENOUGH. I brought a couple of cans of Bugler roll your own tobacco and donated it to the "Nick at Night" tribe. They roll up cigarettes and distribute them freely to the group... You certainly wouldn't want to run out of smokes at the Gathering and suffer withdrawal symptoms... It's more fun to simply BLISS OUT and enjoy the bounty...

I went to the gathering with a goal in mind. I wanted to play my guitar and sing in public. Yes, mission accomplished. Living in Chico, California and working at the plastics factory when there was a layoff, my wife suggested that I borrow the car and drive over to the gathering. My friend Mike Jensen wanted to go and so we checked the oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid and water and set out on a classic American road trip. Riding the Train after a Grateful Dead Concert in Santa Clara 6-28-2015 - Jerry Garcia's Ghost Visited us... as a Rainbow over the Concert and ACTUAL RAIN IN THE SUMMER! Very Rare!

Grateful Dead in Santa Clara, CA 

After the concert, we all got on the Free light-rail train and rode it to Los Gatos. The Train was TOTALLY Packed... Like Japanese. We all sang along to a person's cellphone that played the song "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult. FUN! I ended up sleeping in a field behind a 7/11. A No cost motel room. Then the next day I rode Amtrak to Martinez and then too the bus to Eureka. Using public transportation at this concert was a great blessing... No driving a car after eating Marijuana Cookies!
In general, riding the bus or Train is FUN!

Waiting for the Grateful Dead Concert and eating Costa Rican Chocolate bars that they were vending... Really Strong... I ate a quarter of a bar and barfed it up an hour later... but their cannabis lozenges were EPIC.

The fundamental engineering concept of the "Wall of Sound" is valid... yet for some unknown reason the Phase Cancelling Microphones did not become industry standard. Why not continue Owsley's research into phase cancelling microphones for public address systems. Why not move the second microphone farther away from the primary microphone. Per Bill K, they really had to eat the microphone to make the "Wall of Sound" work. If an engineer made a wireless microphone... Maybe the quality of the new design would make the singers happy...

I feel Extremely Lucky to Have Been Born at a Time When I could Go to A Concert With Jerry Garcia... What a Blessing! One time I Danced RIGHT In Front Touching The Stage at San Jose State University... But It was TOO LOUD so I Only Stayed There for a Few Minutes... He was Drenched in Sweat... You Can't See THAT form The Cheap Seats... The Big Song of the Night was "Lay Down Sally" - Quite a Difficult Song with a PERKY Rhythm... another Time The Dead Played "La Bamba" and it seemed like Only Jerry Really GOT The Rhythm... Everyone Else was Struggling to Stay on the Beat... Just like the Lyrics to the Song "Fire on the Mountain"

Autobiography-The Retirement Years: What I've Been Doing in the Last Five Years...Life is Wonderful. - I Just Read Another Obit about a Friend of Mine... Who Did Not Retire Before Dying... So Sad!

  I Inherited Money from my Father and I Instantly Quit My Job at The County of Humboldt... and Then... I went to The Rainbow Gathering in Utah with my friend Mike. I Met a Guru There (Sonya Sophia) and Participated in her Online Guided Meditations for a Year. (The Rainbow Gathering is a Backpack Trip for 10,000 Hippies) 

My Father's Estate bought a House in Eureka and we Moved to a Place where We Could Watch the Sunset into the Pacific Ocean over the Channel between the Jettys on Humboldt Bay. I Can Verify that the Sun Sets in a Different position into the water depending on the Seasons of the Year. We set up two computers side by side and looked out the window. Often, she would watch Netflix TV Shows (like Sons of Anarchy) and I would do Art and Write Words and post them on my blog. I often took long driving vacations... I drove to Seattle to eat LEGAL Marijuana Cookies, Ride the Monorail and Play Music at the Experience Music Pavilion at the Base of the Space Needle. (a tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Curt Cobain)

And then The State of Oregon Legalized Marijuana. That Winter I Smoked a Pound of Oregon Legal Weed and my Blog saw a Dramatic Increase of Visitors... I Guess it was that "Absurdist Fiction" I was writing... OR Maybe it was the Fact That I Wrote a Program that Tricked Google into Ranking my Blog Highly. That Happened Too... and then one Beautiful Spring Day I Decided to go on another Driving Vacation. I Quit Smoking Weed Entirely, Left it at Home and Headed Out. What I did not realize at the time was... I Remained Stoned for a Month due to the THC Stored inside my Body... and I Experienced Cannabis Psychosis... I Saw Things That Were Not There and Believed They Really Happened... As I Left Fortuna Heading for Chico, I Picked up two Hitchhikers who wanted to go to LA... and so... I ended up Visiting LA and the Deserts of Nevada... The Desert was Amazingly Beautiful! (Marijuana makes things seem better!) After Camping, Eventually I ended up in the Hospital in Chico to treat an Infected Blister on my Foot. I was worried about Amputation and so I checked myself into the Hospital... Then, Surprisingly, The Police came to my bedside and they took me to a Mental Hospital in Sacramento. I Don't Know Why. (Could it be Madness?) They believed I was 5150 and held me for 15 days, then Admitted Their Error and I was released to a Halfway house near Folsom. When I was in the Hospital they gave me Lithium... and that made me passive... but I quit taking that "Medicine" and recovered completely. [Lesson to be learned here... Question IF The Doctor is Giving You Good Advice... 400,00 Dead Oxycontin Users Did Not.]  I have been here ever since. They do all the stuff required by life for me. Buying Food, Cooking, Doing Laundry, Picking Up Prescriptions, Driving my to Doctors Appointments... I Now Have Free Time to Write, Record Music Videos and Do Computer Art and Publish My Ideas Online. For Example: I Emailed All 100 Senators and Recommended that they #ImpeachTrump and I Shared 20 of my best Ideas... I Used Fake Addresses and Phone Numbers so I Appeared to Be a Voter in Their State... 

I spend all day every day creating. I Wrote my autobiography. I Wrote an eBook "America's Bogus Wars (cut the Pentagon Budget in Half and Refund the Money To The Taxpayers)" and Posted 70 Music Videos. I have found that I Get More Stuff Done when Not Stoned... The Quality of Work is More Original When Stoned but the Quantity is Less. Except my Music Videos are Better NOT STONED. I had trouble with playing the piano in a smooth rhythm... I guess that my brain was having difficulty remembering which note to play next... even on songs that I wrote myself and have played for decades... Go Figure... anyway, at this Assisted Living Facility I don't drink booze or smoke tobacco or marijuana. I quit smoking tobacco because my brother got Lung Cancer and that scared me... He recovered, thanks to Modern Medicine THAT HE HELPED TO INVENT at his Job at Genentech. An actual case of "Doctor Heal Thyself." 

I joined a Singing Society at the Folsom Senior Center. 20 People and One Piano Player. We Do "Old Timey" songs like "A Bicycle Built for Two" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy." We also went ON TOUR to other Senior Centers for Christmas Carols... I also lead a Group sing Along for Christmas Here at my Home. (We Have Three Houses) I Own Bells... Handy for Singing "Jingle Bells." It is interesting to perform for REALLY OLD People. We Gave the Bells and They Truly Shook Them Randomly... but we all had a great time and after we had sung all the songs we knew, we sang them again... because... we are old people and we can do what we want!  

SO, what have you been doing recently?

anyway... I have a great Retirement and there is more to come. I got a iPhone and Can hire Uber to Drive me Places... But I don't have much Interest in Traveling! Go Figure! But I Do take a Long Walk Every Morning in the Neighborhood...

I have NOT Participated in any Protest Marches in 15 Years... Many People are Interested in BLACK LIVES MATTER and I Applaud Their Action... However... As an Old White Man... I'm NOT Motivated... I Didn't Participate in any Gay Rights PRIDE Parades Either... but I'm Glad they Can Get Married... I Remember that in 1969 Homosexuality was Illegal... and People were Fired from Government Jobs... The "Lavender Scare" - Stonewall Riots... SEE? WE ARE EVOLVING! Slowly, People are AWAKENING! Just WAKE THE F*CK UP!

It was Mostly German 20 somethings in the Audience... and I HAD NO IDEA that a performer could program a machine to play dance music after the people had left the stage...

At the JFK Show I was sitting up high in the bleachers and noticed that the dancing people looked very similar to Sea Anemones. When the music got very exciting, they would throw their arms up in the air... I could see the music as it  flowed from the front to the back as people raised their arms when they heard it. Very similar to a Sea Anemone flowing in the currents of the ocean... We were flowing in the currents of the music... I remember playing "Witchy Woman" in Chico on Main street with a college girl... Busking for spare change...

When she sang I expected to see her head spin around like the exorcist... She was an enthusiastic singer and we collected a LOT more money when she was performing than when I sang solo.

I also played "Witchy Woman" with Mike Gardener (Lou's Son) after the AA meeting at Campfire Council Ring in Bidwell Park. Then we played "Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning" to bring the listener back into the LIGHT... Send them into madness then bring them back with an Old Negro Spiritual..

I had a meaningful AA meeting with Lou Gardener. He was the Chairperson and we were discussing making amends. The 12 steps says you should make amends to PEOPLE where needed but it DOES NOT say anything about making amends TO CORPORATIONS. How would you even do that? Should you do that at all? Do we have Freedom to Screw Over Corporations at Will? Who did I really harm? The Stockholders? It was an interesting conversation... His advice was that IF it was bothering me and making me feel guilty THEN I should make amends to someone... Maybe an employee in Management... but if it did not bother my conscience, just let it fade into the past. The point of making amends is to help you stay sober and events that don't bother my conscience are not really significant. He also recommended I stop bragging about my life of crime...

Other songs that were fun to play in public were... "People Are Strange" by the Doors, "Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles and "Time Warp" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show...
