How to Fix the Hewlett Packard Extended Service Plan Malware. Hey HP! What A Horrible Thing To Do To Customers... Automatically Installing MALWARE! SHAME ON YOU.. You Freaking WANKERS!

Free Advice from Long Ago... It Worked for Me Then... Maybe It'll Work for You Now... 

On my Vista Computer, Hewlett Packard tries to sell me an Extended Service Plan for my printer Every Day. Every Freaking Day!

Briefly: I Found the File that was Delivering the Advertisement and Deleted it... 
I deleted the file called
TotalCareSetup.ReminderPillar.Content
and that seems to defeat this advertisement...
it was hidden in C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\HP TCS

 also...

 If I Drag the Advertisement Down to the bottom of the screen, the 'Reminder' goes into the Task Bar. I use Auto Hide, so most of the time the Reminder is not visible and the computer is still able to be to used... If I notice that the computer is slow, I right click on the Icon in the Taskbar and click on Close. The reminder stays away for 10 minutes.
And That's Good Enough For Me... Most of the Time... 

That's a Really Good Solution if You are Uncomfortable Deleting Files on the Computer... LIKE: What If This Breaks My Machine?

I AM using Norton 360 and there is a conflict between Norton's Startup Manager and the Windows Task Scheduler... I used Norton 360 to Turn OFF the Application hpwuSchd, restarted the computer, and continued on with my life after wasting a day troubleshooting malware... Deep Sigh...

 I tried remind me later but, of course, it comes back to remind me later.

 I tried Yes I want to buy your *$%#%%$*** Service Plan and then a new webpage appears with the details of this Annoying Offer. I can Close that window and the reminder stays away for a few minutes but then it re-appears...

 If I press The Keys on the Keyboard Ctrl, Alt and Del all at the same time, Click on Start Task Manager, I can End the Task called 'Reminder' on the Applications Tab... But That only works temporarily...
Another Solution that Fails:
Advanced Users May... Find your own copy of the malware hpwuschd and move it to the Recycle Bin...
It may be hidden in many different locations...

Mine was in C:\Program Files (x86) ... 
Use the Search Box... Type in hpwu and look for results...
Move the File to the Recycle Bin... 
Do Not Empty the Recycle Bin...
You may want to restore the application later...
In case this Screws Up Your Computer...
Restart The Computer...


Even after doing all this... The Malware Persists...
It's a Tricky One...

 There are reported instances where some notebook programs continue to display pop up reminders even after you perform the requested action. In
most of these instances, the program did not remove the Task Scheduler entry and the pop-up message displays each time the Task Scheduler
starts. To stop the pop-up message action from repeating, you must run the Task Scheduler program and manually remove the entry.

 To prevent automated tasks from starting multiple times, remove the entry from the Task Scheduler by performing the following actions:
1. Click Start, type Scheduler in the search field, and select Task Scheduler when it appears.
If prompted for permission, click Continue.
2. In the left column, click Task Scheduler Library.
3. In the center column, select the task you want to stop.
4. In the right column, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm deletion.
5. Close the Task Scheduler window.
The task or reminder will no longer begin automatically.

 The Leslie speaker is a combined amplifier and loudspeaker that projects the signal from an electric or electronic instrument and modifies the sound by rotating a baffle chamber ("drum") in front of the loudspeakers. A similar effect is provided by a rotating system of horns in front of the treble driver. It is most commonly associated with the Hammond organ, though it was later used for the electric guitar and other instruments. A typical Leslie speaker contains an amplifier, a treble horn and a bass speaker—though specific components depend upon the model. A musician controls the Leslie speaker by either an external switch or pedal that alternates between a slow and fast speed setting, known as "chorale" and "tremolo".

The speaker is named after its inventor, Donald Leslie, who began working in the late 1930s to get a speaker for a Hammond organ that better emulated a pipe or theatre organ, and discovered that baffles rotating along the axis of the speaker cone gave the best sound effect. Hammond were not interested in marketing or selling the speakers, so Leslie sold them himself as an add-on, targeting other organs as well as Hammond. Leslie made the first speaker in 1941. The sound of the organ being played through his speaker received national radio exposure across the US, and it became a commercial and critical success. It soon became an essential tool for most jazz organists. and then on Facebook SE Said: I honestly have a hard time understanding the constant chanting of "We need more housing!" here in the Bay Area. I mean, on the one hand, I get it. Everybody in the world wants to live here, people are moving here from all over the world to get in on the high-paying tech industry, and apparently there isn't enough housing for everyone who wants to live here. That part I get. But the part that proponents of "more housing" never want to acknowledge is the fact that we are SO overcrowded already. Life has become so much more stressful here as we've become so inundated with people. Our roads are gridlocked, especially our freeways. Many of us feel like we can only work within a certain distance from where we live because if we branch out any farther, we'll end up with a commute where we spend several hours in stand-still traffic every day. There are high-density apartment buildings going up EVERYWHERE, yet the rents NEVER go down. EVER. With each new high-density building that opens up, the rents only continue to get higher and higher. Two years ago, apartments were renting for $3000 a month. Now, they're $4000 a month, and that's with thousands upon thousands of NEW apartments all over town. The rents never go down no matter how much housing we build, because the people who move here have money, and they can afford to shell out thousands and thousands each month on rent.  I never see any evidence that all of this endless high-density housing is ever going to cause rents to do anything except continue to go up. 

But my main issue is the reduced quality of life that results from having too many people packed into an area which wasn't meant to hold so many people. I haven't even touched on the water issue, the fact that we are in a constant state of drought, and there already isn't enough water for the people who were already here...and yet, they want to build all of this housing to bring hundreds of thousands - maybe millions - MORE people here?? In all my life, they're never built any new reservoirs in the San Jose area, and yet the population has quadrupled in my lifetime. Maybe it's more than quadrupled, I don't actually know. But we have constant drought now, and yet we're somehow supposed to make those same old reservoirs work for MILLIONS of new residents in addition to the millions who are already here?!? Where are we going to get the water for millions of new residents when we're already running out of water for the millions who are already here? Why does no one ever talk about the water issue? It's just a constant drumbeat of "We need more housing!" without any consideration for the reality of what that means. 

There are too many people living here already. They should stop building more housing to bring even more people to an already overpopulated area. It makes no sense, and it clearly is NOT bringing down the high rents. If we STOP building the high-density housing, the millions of people who want to move here will have no where to live, so they WON'T MOVE HERE. Why do we want to make it easier for them to come here and crowd the area even more, and drive up the cost of living even more? STOP BUILDING THE HOUSING. Let those people stay where they are, or let them move someplace that has enough room for millions of new residents. They DON'T have to come HERE. We don't have to accommodate millions of people just because they WANT to be here. I want a lot of things that I don't get to have. It's part of life. There simply isn't room here for everyone who wants to be here. The entire world can't fit into the Bay Area. It isn't logical or practical, and it will ultimately destroy the area. Just because millions of people WANT to live here, that doesn't mean we have to find a way to fit them all in. If there is no room, there is no room. People can work from anywhere now. The pandemic proved that. People in tech don't HAVE to physically be located in Silicon Valley. Stop building the housing! Let them live somewhere else!

VK Replied: I agree. I always see people say the answer is more housing but maybe the answer is less people. From my understanding though, I think a lot of people have moved away with the new ability for so many to work from home. Lots of people moved away from places like LA as well to places like Texas where cost of living is cheaper. I actually looked up an apartment complex across the street from DD's on Saratoga and it was going from $1800-2200 which actually didn't seem to bad for that area compared to before. So I think the rents may have dipped due to people moving away after covid. But now Sacramento is the next best thing because people are taking their gobs of money from the bay area and buying in full here, making it impossible for those of us who have lived here for years to buy a home for the first time. We're constantly outbid on houses here by some transplant from the bay area with their nest egg and its so frustrating. We spent years building up our jobs and incomes for that ability and I was just saying that I think anyone who moves here should be required to rent for a year and establish residency before buying a house here. Sort of like when you move out of state to go to a university. You have to wait a year to get in-state tuition rates.

SE Replied: Yeah, there have been a lot of news stories about the "mass exodus" out of California, but it's not true. I mean, I think there are people who are leaving, but they're being outnumbered by the people who are arriving here in droves. If people were truly leaving to a noticeable degree, there would be less traffic, rents would plummet, housing costs would plummet, and life would change dramatically. But in reality, none of those things have happened. Traffic continues to get worse, housing and apartment costs continue to go up, never down, and every place you go is just as crowded as it ever was. Believe me, I really wish the "mass exodus" was real. It would be so wonderful if the population of this state would go down to what it was in the 90's or before. I would give anything to be able to hop on one of the freeways during rush hour and have traffic actually flow as it's supposed to. In the 90's, that was possible, but not anymore. And if there were truly a "mass exodus" out of the state, we should see evidence of that in traffic and rents. But prices never go down. I wish they'd stop building so much housing! Maybe then people would stop moving here!

VE Replied: I hear you. I am sorry it’s gotten the way it is - it really sucks to be trying to buy right now. I think your idea of having to establish residency isn’t a bad one, but it would not go over well with people who are poised to purchase, and renting can be realllllly hard. A number of years ago we had to rent between homes (house wasn’t ready to move into and we had sold the other one) and it was damn near impossible to find something fast, particularly with pets.

We lived here (Folsom) in the 90’s (I went to Sac State and took root there, so I was “from” Sacramento I guess, although not a native Californian) we moved up to Olympia WA in 2000 (by choice). We have investment properties here, so when we were thinking about possibly moving back, we started using one to live in part-time. Did this for a few years, but going back and forth was a pain... so we decided to just move back permanently. Continued to use our little place while looking (it’s too small for full-time), found our current house in Fall of 19 - JUST before the sh!t hit the fan. We had thought we might move again, maybe, but with what’s happening with the market - no way! We now feel LUCKY that we found this house. Have put a lot into it, so will stay and call it home.

I heard a segment on NPR a couple weeks ago about “zoom towns,” they were specifically talking about Truckee. The Bay Area exit has affected many markets! We actually have some tenants at a place in Folsom who had sold their home locally, planning to move to Truckee. But they’re discouraged by the crazy market there now, and are waiting it out (it’s why they’re renting from us.)

SE Replied: I sure wish this so-called Bay Area exodus would make a dent in the overpopulation issue around here. I believe that it's happening, and I even know a few people who have moved out of state in recent years, but it never makes a dent in the overcrowding or the high cost of living. We need a lot MORE people to leave the Bay Area before it will be enough to make a difference in the quality of life here. I kinda wish the news stories would explain that. They make it sound like we've got tumbleweeds blowing through empty streets and a bunch of empty buildings because nobody wants to live here anymore. But that can't be further from the truth. People are still paying millions OVER the asking price for an old, run-down house, and they think nothing of shelling out $3000 or $4000 a month on rent. If tons of people are leaving, rents and housing costs should be going down. But not enough people are leaving to make any difference.

I Said: I escaped from San Jose in the Late 1990s. Moved to Chico... a Small Town with a College in the Center. Then Moved to Eureka in 2001. A Small Town with a College in the Center... I Went to Humboldt State University and graduated with a Degree in Computer Science and IMMEDIATLY Got a Great Job with the County Government. SO... I'm a Strong Believer in SMALL TOWNS being Vastly Better than the Big City... Going to Visit my Brother in San Francisco is VERY STRESSFUL... Too Many People... Too Many Cars... Too Freaking MUCH!... I'm So Glad to Have Escaped... and Now I live in a Really Really Small Town (Orangevale) near Folsom... I Applied HERE: https://www.calhr.ca.gov/pmd for the Job Called Eligibility worker at the Department of Health and Human Services. I interviewed people applying for Medi-Cal, Food Stamps, AFDC and General Relief... Then I Typed their answers into a Computer... and Determined IF They Were Eligible. Clean, Safe High Pay Work in ANY County of California. Benefits, Retirement... It's a Way to Go Live in a Remote Small Town... The Quality of Life in Eureka is Excellent... Low Rent, Low Crime, Great Schools... The way it works is: Twice a Year about a Hundred People Take a Test to see if You Can Read and Write English, Do Math with a Pencil, Read a Chart, and Spell... The top 20% of the Test takers get an Interview... One Goal of the Testing System is to Defeat "Equal Opportunity" Laws... "Hey, We're Equal Opportunity, Everyone Gets the Same Test." - and If Certain People Can't Read and Write... It's Not OUR Fault... and... They DO Pay Extra if You are Bi-Lingual... English and Spanish or English and Hmong or English and American Sign Language...
