There is growing concern about the spread of aquatic invasive and nuisance plant species which cover over 90 percent of the Tahoe Keys lagoons. Despite the considerable management and financial investment of the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) to control this problem, weeds continue to spread and management costs continue to mount.

Train Trail from San Francisco to Humboldt Bay

More than a century ago, a railroad was constructed to shuttle passengers and redwood logs between San Francisco and Humboldt Bay.

Now the since-abandoned train track could be transformed into a 307-mile pathway through remote, wild country along California’s North Coast, a move advocates hope will create a world-class outdoors destination and jump-start the economy.

The Great Redwood Trail moved closer to realization this week with the release of a document mapping out the planning, construction and management of the trail in Mendocino, Trinity and Humboldt counties, or the northern portion of the envisioned path. Segments in Sonoma and Marin counties will be planned separately.
“I would put it in the category of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail — these large, landscape-scale trails that provide an experience for people to see areas that they just would never have access to otherwise,” said Caryl Hart, chair of the California Coastal Commission and board member of the Great Redwood Trail Agency, which is tasked with developing the path.

If realized, the project would be the longest so-called rail trail in the country, generally following the defunct track through towering redwoods and along rushing rivers teeming with salmon. The relatively flat trail would accommodate hikers, bikers and horseback riders while potentially providing an economic infusion to small towns struggling amid the decline of logging and rise of legal cannabis.

Officials say it’s probably 20 years away from completion but will move forward section by section.

and Deportation for people that overstay their Student Visas! Like Melania Trump and her "Chain Migration" Parents. She had a "Genius" Visa? WTF!

There was a time Years ago when it Made Sense to Allow People into the USA... BUT... That time has Passed... In the 1970s we brought Computer Engineers and Programmers into Silicon Valley... I worked at a Place where half of the employees were from Foreign Countries... but NOW... Massive High Tech Layoffs... NO NEED for People To Come Here...

What about a Massive Deportation effort on People that have overstayed their visa? One thing for Certain, NO ONE from Gaza Comes Here. NONE!

an Alternative Solution:

Lets HIRE IMMIGRANTS and Collect Social Security and Income Tax from Them. While Republicans are FREAKING OUT about the Border... the Solution is Obvious...

and That would Solve the Problem of Illegal Immigration... Simply Legalize it and Put 'em to Work! Everybody Wins!

Family Separation and Detention...
https://www.americanbar.org/advocacy/governmental_legislative_work/priorities_policy/immigration/familyseparation/

In April 2018, Attorney General Sessions announced a “zero tolerance” policy under which the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will refer all migrants who enter the U.S. without authorization to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal prosecution. This policy expands “Operation Streamline,” a program which began in 2005.

As a result of the zero tolerance policy, the government separated more than 2000 children from their parents at the border during the period of mid-April to June. Since children cannot be held in criminal detention, the children are designated as “unaccompanied alien children” and placed in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). ORR places the children in shelters until they are released to a family member, guardian, or foster family.

Family detention is not the answer to family separation. It's a failure and a disgrace. Asylum seekers are fleeing chilling violence and threats. They deserve help, not inhumane, sometimes terrifying treatment at family detention centers.

Virtual Journey: New York: Excellent Places to Go! Autobiography...

Ausable Chasm Boat Ride.

Ausable Chasm Boatride New York - Autobiography - gvan42 - purple64ets
https://www.ausablechasm.com/

MAP! https://goo.gl/maps/FBtQX5Ts3nXZsi9i8

The first time I went to New York was with my parents. We took a Thrilling Boatride down the Ausable Chasm. Steep Cliffs. DEEP! It's way far north near Lake Champlain. (the Border between NY and Vermont) - That was the Trip that we drove all over the North East USA. We Went to Yale University where I bought a Sweatshirt with LARGE Letters... That was When I was Very Young... Before I Stopped using my Clothes as a Billboard for Corporations to Advertise on...  and Mystic Seaport... and Bangor Main... With my Father Singing "King of the Road" because we also had a Destination, Bangor Maine...

The NEXT Journey was to Visit my Brother That Lived in Rural New Jersey near Suffern. He was a College Student at NYU. The Student Housing was an apartment on a Lake in a Forest. I took the PATH Train to Downtown Manhattan and Wandered all over Looking at the Tall Buildings... I was a senior in high school... 1972...

PATH Train - Port Authority Trans Hudson - New Jersey to NYC
PATH Train - Port Authority Trans Hudson

On another Day My Brother, His Wife and I went Downtown... She Insisted that She Dress Up Formally since we were going "To Town" and that Meant Wearing a Dress. It was Astonishingly Cold that Day and I was Wearing Long Johns under my Pants. She was Freezing so we Stopped and Bought her Boots that Covered her Legs Up to Near the Knees... Just to Fight off the Cold... Of Course we COULD Have Bought her Pants and Long Johns but THAT Wouldn't Have Been Fashionable... Just Wasn't Done!

That Year Martin and I Went to Times Square for New Years Eve... The only thing I remember about that was Cold Weather, Large Crowds and a Ball Dropping...

~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~
in 1975 I was working at the "Old Paint Store" in Valley Fair and two other Employees took an EPIC Bicycle Ride along the Coast of New England... So after hearing Stories all Winter Long, Jo Ann and I Took Our Own EPIC Bike Ride... (last chance to do something like that before we got married...) From New York City to Washington DC. It took us about Two Months... We rode a Greyhound Bus to the Station in Manhattan where a Friend of My Brother's Picked us up. The Three Day Bus Ride Caused Her Feet to Swell Up and she Had Difficulty Walking for a Day... So we just Rested at a Hotel...
He lived in Upstate New York on the Hudson River in Nyack. We assembled the Bicycles in his Garage. Before we Rode away he suggested we drive thru Harlem just son we could see it... Halfway thru, a Radiator Hose Burst on his Car Spewing STEAM Everywhere... a Local man Shouted "Fuego! Fuego!" - Thankfully we were able to pull into a Gas Station that Had a Hose... and We Were able to Leave... Safely... It was Odd that He Thought we Ought to Visit Harlem... Like a Cultural Awareness Trip... Or Something...
The Man, Guy Something 'er Other Worked as an Architectural Designer and He Designed the Lobby of Corning Glass Works... Many Cubes with Glass Products Painted on each Face and Stored in a Matrix of Cube Holders. That Way They Could be Rearranged at Will to Show Different Glass Products Every Day... Sadly there are No Photographs of this Installation on Google Image Search... or I Would Show You What It Was Like...
anyway... During the 1980s I Visited the Museum of Glass in the Town of Corning. I remember they had a Giant Telescope Mirror and a LOT of Corningwear... Dishes that Could Stand The Heat in an Oven... They Were Famous For Cooking Casseroles... and they Had a Movie Called "The Story of Glass"that explained History... What I Remember was it had a Soundtrack of Extremely Bad Synthesizer Music... I was playing the Synthesizer at that time and Thought, DANG! I Play better than That! Maybe I Could Sell Recordings for Industrial Flims Myself... But That Never Happened... Leon, a Guy in Our Band (Solarwind) took a Demo Tape to NYC but No Sale...
~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~

Then we rode our Bicycles Out of Nyack and Towards New Jersey. I Had Assembled Her Bicycle WRONG and the Rear Tire Rubbed against the Brake Shoe... a Bad Way to Start an EPIC Journey... However, it was easy to Fix once I Was Alerted to The Problem. We Rode about 20 to 50 miles a day thru Farmland of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland... Sleeping at Campgrounds and on Private Farms...

Years Later My First Wife, Jo Ann and I Moved to Washington DC and It was a Short Drive to New York City... A Co-Worker quit the Job at the Agency and Moved Back to Manhattan... We Went to Visit and She Gave Us an Insiders Tour... We Went to an Authentic Italian Restaurand where they had a Lady Singing Opers in Italian as she wandered between the Tables...

We Also Decided to Go to The World Trade Center because on TOP there was a Bar with Excellent Views... We Were Quite a Distance Uptown co we Called a Cab and I Said: "I'll Give you an Extra Twenty if You can Get us there before Closing Time." - Challenging a NYC Cab Driver to Drive Fast! - We Made it... Sadly, Gentlemen were required to wear Neckties and Dianne's Date and I were NOT Allowed to Go Up there... So we waited at the Bottom while the Ladies went up... "Hey, It's not our problem that they won't let you in. Were going UP!" So I never Made it to the "Windows on the World" and on 9/11 all three Buildings Fell Down. WTC1, WTC2 and WTC7...

Windows on the World Restaurant - World Trade Center - NYC

~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~
I went to The Guggenheim Museum. On that day there was an "Interactive" Giant Foam Sculpture on the Floor in the Center... With Places Carved out for People to Lie Down In... and Look at the Ceiling... Later I rode the Elevator to the Top and Walked the Circular Ramp Down... admiring the Paintings and Sculptures...
In the 1980s My Friends Ken, His Son Ken, Mark and I went to Visit the Museum of Holography.
The Kiss Holograph
That was an art form that had recently been invented and the Only place we could see it was in New York City. Basically, it was a Clear Piece of Plastic that Projected a Rainbow Colored Three Dimensional Image of a Person blowing a Kiss... and as I Viewed it from Different Angles her Hand Moved Close to her Lips and then Far Away...
Magical!
On that Trip I got a Speeding Ticket on the Jersey Turnpike. 75 MPH Speeding? Of Course, most people were driving 75 or Even Faster... The Policeman waved over Five Cars at a time and Wrote Tickets... I refused to Pay and Learned that The State of New Jersey and the State of Maryland Have "Reciprocity" which means that when I went to renew my Registration, they refused until I Paid off my Ticket and a Fine... I also learned that the State of New York Does NOT Have "Reciprocity" because I Have an Unpaid Speeding Ticket there also...
~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~

and then One Day I decided to Go See the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden... I didn't have a Ticket but was able to find a Scalper... I drove my Car and Parked in the Long Term Parking at Newark Airport. A Convenient and Safe Place to Leave a Car... Better than on the Island of Manhattan... Took a Bus to The Show... Had a Great Time... Met some people called "Wharf Rats" who had a Table set up promoting a Clean and Sober Lifestyle... I guess that even in the Late 1980s I had an Interest in That...

After the Concert I walked Downstairs to Pennsylvania Station - Trains and Many Restaurants, Gift Shops, News Stands... etc etc etc... It was as if the Entire Party had simply moved Downstairs... I got a Train to New Jersey and a Taxi to the Airport...

Pennsylvania Station, NYC - Old Time Drawing

Pennsylvania Station, NYC

Old Time Drawing

I was feeling Optimistic and Energetic so Instead of Driving Home, I Drove to Boston... Arrived in the Early Morning and Camped at a Campground near Lexington and Concord... The Next day I Took my Acoustic Guitar to Walden Pond... I wrote some Chord Progressions for some Lyrics that a Young Girl had Written in My Songbook. I didn't have a pen to write them down so I lit a Twig on fire and used the Charcoal to Write...

~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~
During the 1990s, When I Worked at the USPS Engineering Center, A Co Worker asked if I would Drive to a Hindu Wedding in the Bronx... I Said Yes and So: A Hindu Man from Guayana named Locknut Dewandan and Leroy Brown, a Black Man from the USA and I Travelled to New York City. The First place we stopped was at Leroy's Mother's Apartment. She was the Owner of a Rastafarian Bar. She said we couldn't Visit It because the Air Conditioner was broken and she had pride of Ownership... Come Back on another day when The Bas is Presentable...
So We wnt to an Apartment Building that was 100% Hindus... With a Temple in the Basement... Almost Everyone was a Recent Immigrant from Guayana, South America... a Former British Colony... Long Ago The British Gathered Indians from India to Work in the Sugar Cane in Guayana... Somehow Slavery was Ended and It Became a Country of Its Own... They had No Knowledge of Jim Jones. He was Just a Crazy Amarican...
The Family had the Groom sit on a Blankey wearing a Loincloth and spread Saffron on his Body... He had a Bad alergic Reaction so they washed it off... Just another Ancient Religious Ritual that Actually Makes No Sense... We Sat Around the Apartment Eating Home Cooked "Sacred" Rice Dishes... After I Had Eaten Enough and was Refusing to Eat any More... they Kept On Serving it and Trying to Get me to Eat More and More and More... Because it was "Holy" and Refusing Food was an Insult to The Family... I Refused anyway and they Gave Up...
On the Night before the Wedding Many of Us went to a Hindu DISCO and Danced to Indian Music... It was Excellent! Modern Music with Electric Guitars, Synthesizers, Drum Machines but Obviously Indian Vocals and Melodies... The Young Women were Very Attractive... A Great TIME!
The Actual Wedding Ceremony Happened in the Basement with an Old Lady Playing Drums... and Chanting... Of Course the Ceremony was Spoken in a Foreign Language... Then We Ate More "Sacred" Food and Listened to a Ghetto-Blaster Turned up Very Loud - So Loud the Sound was Horrible Distorted...
At Night We Walked the Young Ladies from One Apartment Building to Another because It was Just Too Dangerous for them to walk Unescorted... Wonderful Place, The Bronx!
Thomas Jefferson is Suddenly "Not Worthy" Because He Owned Slaves... ABSURD! What About George Washington? He Owned Slaves TOO.
Headline: Thomas Jefferson statue to be removed from New York City Council chamber...
https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/19/us/thomas-jefferson-statue-new-york-city/index.html
Adams... a Light skinned black woman
Adrienne Adams... a Light Skinned Black Woman
She Has Some White People as Ancestors...
Maybe Jefferson Himself?
or Maybe George Washington!
"Thomas Jefferson was a slaveholder who owned over 600 human beings," Councilmember Adrienne Adams, co-chair of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus, said in a presentation before the commission. "It makes me deeply uncomfortable knowing that we sit in the presence of a statue that pays homage to a slaveholder who fundamentally believed that people who look like me* were inherently inferior, lacked intelligence, and were not worthy of freedom or rights."
*Well, Not Exactly Like You... People That Look Like You Worked in the House... and Were Treated Differently because they were the Master's Children.  Most were taught how to read and Write and were Given Names...
For Example: Most were Named Jefferson...
~~~~~~ (~);-} ~~~~~~

Having written that "all men are created equal" as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, he also enslaved more than 600 people and fathered at least six children with Sally Hemings, a woman he enslaved.

Not everyone supported the removal of the statue. Sean Wilentz, a American history professor at Princeton University, wrote in a letter read to the commission: "The statue specifically honors Jefferson for his greatest contribution to America, indeed, to humankind."

https://news.yahoo.com/thomas-jefferson-statue-removed-york-152934678.html

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,[Except Blacks and Women] that they are endowed by their Creator [Named Jesus, Allah, Yahweh, Odin, Thor, KRSNA, Buddha or a Thousand Other Names] with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”[Unless your Pursuit uses Marijuana or Psychedelics as a Sacrament] - DANG... So Many Disclaimers...

If a statue of Jefferson is unfit for City Hall, so is the statue of George Washington, owner of 577 human beings. And if we accept the principle that it is a moral mistake to put two of the most influential early Americans on pedestals there, we should remove Washington from the former site of Federal Hall downtown. Rename Washington Heights and Washington Square. And if slaveholder-founders are unfit for honors in America’s largest city, what are we doing naming the nation’s capital, and dozens of cities and counties and streets and parks, after them? Valid Questions... You may find some answers reading about our founding Fathers on Wiki...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington

https://www.nps.gov/thje/index.htm Take a Tour of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC...  Founding Father... Revolutionary... Renaissance Man. Thomas Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, first Secretary of State for the United States of America, and a complex, 19th-century man with a wide ranging impact on the very makeup of America itself.

https://www.monticello.org/house-gardens/ Monticello is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson—designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years. Its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.

Map of the USA - Thomas Jefferson

Concerned about losing access to the port of New Orleans, in 1803 President Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to Paris to attempt to buy the city from France, authorizing them to offer France up to $10 million for it.

Meanwhile, Napoleon had concluded that it wasn’t worth the cost for France to try to hold onto its vast North American territory. So when Monroe and Livingstone arrived to commence negotiations, they were astonished when France offered to sell the United States not just New Orleans, but the entire Louisiana Territory. They did not have authority to negotiate any such deal, but when France offered the entire territory for only $15 million (only $5 million more than they were prepared to offer for New Orleans alone), the deal was too good for them to turn down. On April 30, 1803 they signed the Louisiana Purchase Treaty, by which the United States would acquire 828,000 square miles of land, at a price of three cents per acre (sixty cents per acre in current dollars). The deal would double the size of the United States. “This is the noblest work of our whole lives,” Livingston remarked.

When the commissioners returned to the United States with the remarkable treaty, Jefferson was amazed and delighted. But the road to ratification was anything but smooth. There were very serious objections to the constitutionality of the treaty and there was also the inconvenient fact that the United States didn’t actually have $15 million. But in the end, the proponents of the purchase prevailed, the U.S. borrowed the money from financiers in Great Britain, and on October 20, 1803 (two hundred eighteen years ago today) the Senate gave its advice and consent to ratification of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty—one of the best real estate bargains in history. “From this day the United States take their place among the powers of the first rank,” Livingston said.

Thanks to several great comments the post has been edited to clarify that the funds were loaned by financiers in Great Britain, not the British government.

We discovered a "secret" beach in Fairhaven that no one ever goes to on a boatride. As we passed Fairhaven on the North Jetty, I saw the beach and a road... later I looked it up on Google Maps and figured out how to get there. We were all alone except for a man in a kayak cruising by.

Other places to visit:
The North Jetty itself. Bring sensible shoes so we can walk to the end where the dolos are... be aware that sometimes the waves are so large that it would be dangerous to walk on the jetty... but you can watch from the top of the sand dunes.

Giles by the Bay restaurant in King Salmon. It is at the end of the small peninsula that is right next to our house. The restaurant is not spectacular but I often park there to walk around and look at the house, bay, boats... There is a good swimming/wading beach there. In the afternoons in the summer the water is warm enough to swim in... It's a bay... The Ocean is simply too cold.

Trinidad: Pier, Beach and the fabulous restaurant. There is a marine life museum and classrooms from Humboldt State. A great trip as they have working example of the Hydrogen Fuel Cells invented at Schatz Laboratory HSU. They are participating in radioactivity monitoring from Fukushima. In co-operation with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
(Take the Trinidad exit off of Hwy 101, head west on Main St., turn left on Trinity St., right on Edwards St., and right on Ewing St. as the road veers left.)

I looked at both active tree-sit ecology actions. Too long of a hike to get to where they are... and in my humble opinion... How can I really get excited about protesting logging way off in the woods? It is delicate balance between providing boards for construction and saving the trees... This ecology action does not motivate me.

Mattole: There is a great drive to the end of the road... but... it's trespassing for a mile or so... and that's too far. The drive goes from the Avenue of the Giants towards the Mattole river and The Lost Coast... Ending in Victorian Ferndale. This is a road that is NOT visible on Google Streetview.  Bull Creek Flats Road... in Humboldt Redwoods State Park... to Mattole road and the town of Honeydew... Out there is a Sobriety Retreat on top of a mountain with a giant cross made from two large trees... I took a picture there and captured the spirit of that moment... close to the clouds in a big wind...

The other Tree-Sit is at Strawberry Rock near Trinidad. Take the Trinidad exit and instead of turning left and going to Trinidad, go straight  ahead at the end of the off ramp and follow the Frontage road that parallels Highway 101 all the way to the end... That's where the trail starts... Link to a map.

This is a historic train in Scotia, California. A beautiful town completely owned by MAXXAM. [until they went bankrupt] Sort of like a stage set, it is entirely built of redwood lumber with columns made from entire trees with the bark intact. Come visit sometime and be sure to go on the factory tour. It is the largest building in California. MAXXAM did a corporate raider takeover using Michael Milken junk bonds and is proceeding to cut down old growth redwood as fast as possible and take all the profit and move it to Texas. After all the profitable trees are gone then it's time for bankruptcy... Just like they did with Kaiser Aluminum. and that's exactly what they did... now it's all owned by the Fisher Family [most famous for The Gap clothing stores]

These pictures were taken behind the Bayshore Shopping Mall. Where there is a huge abandoned building that has been decorated by grafitti artists... It made me think of the CyberPunk science fiction novels by William Gibson where all the action takes place in San Francisco after the collapse of western civilization due to lack of oil. These machines would fit perfectly because they are entirely bicycle powered...

Let's use The Bark from Redwood Trees to Prevent Weeds instead of RoundUP! We use Bark in our garden and it works great. AND! It doesn't kill people... It's a One Time Cost for the Farmer and the Money is Kept within the State of California... Currently, a Giant Barge of Redwood Bark and wood chips Leaves Eureka, California Every Week headed for China... We also ship entire logs... They don't want the logs sawed up into boards because they have their own sawmills... and it's cheaper to employ Chinese Slaves to do the Work.

Farmers have to pay for RoundUP every year and The Costs of all those Lawsuits MUST be passed on to the Farmers and the people that buy the Food. AND! We Eat That Poison! We could have healthier Food if we just used Redwood Bark and Wood Chips to Prevent Weeds.

BIOMASS Electric Power Plants Could Dispose of the Millions of Dead Trees in California that are a Fire Hazard. Before we have another Disastrous Wildfire like we had in Paradise last summer, we could remove the fuel from the forests and use it to generate electricity.

"The number of biomass plants, another option for disposing of trees, has fallen to about two dozen from 66 in the 1990s, in part due to the expiration of government price subsidies." - according to the California Energy Commission.

Why not REOPEN those unused BIOMASS plants and clean up our forests before we have a Disaster?
