Brief Summary:
The acute subjective effects of serotonin (5-HT)2A receptor stimulation with lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in humans are mostly positive. However, negative effects such as anxiety, paranoid thinking or loss of trust towards other people are common effects, depending on the dose administered, the personality traits of the person consuming it (set), or the environment in which LSD is taken (setting). Negative psychedelic effects may cause acute distress to the subject and acute anxiety has been linked to less favourable long-term outcomes in patients experimentally treated with LSD or similar substances for the treatment of depression. The 5-HT and oxytocin releaser 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) reliably induces positive mood up to euphoria, comfort, empathy, and feelings of trust. If administered in combination with LSD, MDMA may increase positive subjective drug effects including positive mood, empathy, and trust and reduce negative emotions and anxiety associated with LSD and overall produce a more positive over negative experience. The present study will assess subjective and autonomic effects of LSD alone and in combination with MDMA.

Of all the counter-culture behaviors in the nineteen-sixties, the use of acid was one of the most stigmatized. This article argues that the criminalization of LSD in the sixties was a direct effort to marginalize hippies. The text first lays out a brief history of LSD in its clinical applications and the cultural implications of its expansion into recreational use. The stipulations of the drug’s Schedule I status are then analyzed for validity. In arguing that the Schedule I status of LSD is not substantially supported, the text concludes by reasoning that the criminalization of LSD was a discriminatory act rather than a medical safeguard.

Writer and activist Michael Pollan has spent years researching psychedelic substances, their history, and their use in treatment of addiction and mental health issues, culminating in his acclaimed book 'How to Change Your Mind'. He spoke to Hay Festival-goers about why psychedelics are back in discussion, and where that discussion could lead us.
The history of psychedelics is a highly politicized one, Pollan explained: in the mid-20th century, the CIA had various plans to weaponize it, including use as a truth drug or mind control, none of which worked out. There were medical experiments happening in the 1940s too, some of which were seeing interesting results.
Around this time, psychedelics ‘escaped the lab’: they ended up being a strong part of 1960s counterculture, embraced by hippie culture with global effects. “The Beatles certainly got a lot better after LSD,” Pollan joked.
President Nixon even blamed LSD for the anti-war movement, though perhaps not without cause, Pollan suggested. Psychedelics can make you think for yourself, to want to circumvent violent, institutional, and authoritarian power structures: that’s destabilizing for regimes like the USA.
Nixon and his moral panic lead to the criminalization of LSD, along with cannabis, meaning that medical research largely stopped and funding sources dried up.
It wasn’t until the 1990s that momentum was regained – and a buried body of knowledge was rediscovered. It is now being taken to some of the most important medical centers in the world – from Johns Hopkins in the USA to Oxford University.
On another note, there are those who would suggest that the Beat Movement was part of a grand conspiracy; and the Beats themselves unwitting pawns in this game. In one of his many broadsheets self-published over the years, Kerry Thornley once posited this theory, without actually elaborating on exactly what this conspiracy entailed. Perhaps what Thornley was alluding to is the same theme found in Todd Brendan Fahey's Wisdom's Maw, which suggests that Ken Kesey as well as the Beats were part of an elaborate scheme concocted by the American Intelligence Community to infiltrate and supply the sixties counterculture with mind altering drugs, ostensibly to test their reactions, and--long range--to influence widespread social control. Theoretically, this was all conducted under the covert auspices of such infamous CIA mind control projects as Artichoke and MK-ULTRA. This New York City Pharma Startup Wants To Turn LSD Into An FDA-Approved Medicine For Anxiety Disorder.
Mind Medicine Inc., a New York-based psychedelic drug development company, that counts Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary and Toms Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie as investors, has acquired the exclusive rights to eight clinical trials that are exploring the medicinal properties of the powerful hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). One of the studies is an ongoing, placebo-controlled Phase 2 trial of LSD for the treatment of anxiety disorder.

Hallucinogens can be found in the extracts of some plants or mushrooms, or they can be manmade like LSD. The ergot fungus, from which Hofmann synthesized LSD in 1938, has been associated with hallucinogenic effects since ancient times.
Peyote, a cactus native to parts of Mexico and Texas, contains a psychoactive chemical called mescaline. Native Americans in Mexico have used peyote and mescaline in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. There are more than 100 species of mushrooms around the world that contain psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound. Archeologists believe humans have used these “magic mushrooms” since prehistoric times.
Carlos Castañeda was a reclusive author whose best-selling series of books include The Teachings of Don Juan, published in 1968.
In his writings, Castañeda explored the use of mescaline, psilocybin and other hallucinogenics in spirituality and human culture. Born in Peru, Castañeda spent much of his adult life in California and helped to define the psychological landscape of the 1960s.

Both psychology professors at Harvard University, Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert administered LSD and psychedelic mushrooms to Harvard students during a series of experiments in the early 1960s.
At the time, neither of these substances were illegal in the United States. (The U.S. federal government didn’t outlaw LSD until 1968.)
Leary and Alpert documented the effects of the hallucinogenic drugs on the students’ consciousness. The scientific community, however, criticized the legitimacy of the studies which Leary and Alpert conducted while also tripping.
Both men were eventually dismissed from Harvard but went on to become symbols of the psychedelic drug and hippie counterculture.
Leary founded a psychedelic religion based on LSD called the League for Spiritual Discovery and coined the phrase “tune in, turn on, drop out.” Alpert wrote a popular spiritual book called Remember: Be Here Now under the pseudonym Baba Ram Dass.

After volunteering to take part in Project MKUltra as a student at Stanford University, Ken Kesey, author of the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, went on to promote the use of LSD. In the early 1960s, Kesey and the Merry Pranksters (as his group of followers were called) hosted a series of LSD-fueled parties in the San Francisco Bay area. Kesey called these parties “Acid Tests.”
Acid Tests combined drug use with musical performances by bands including the Grateful Dead and psychedelic effects such as fluorescent paint and black lights.
Author Tom Wolfe based his 1968 non-fiction book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, on the experiences of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. The book chronicles the Acid Test parties and the growing 1960s hippie counterculture movement.

Project MK-Ultra, the code name given to a Central Intelligence Agency program that began in the 1950s and lasted through the 1960s, is sometimes known as part of the CIA’s “mind control program.” Throughout the years of Project MK-Ultra, the CIA experimented with LSD and other substances on both volunteers and unwitting subjects. They believed that LSD could be used as a psychological weapon in the Cold War. Hypnosis, shock therapy, interrogation and other dubious mind-control techniques were also part of MK-Ultra.
The experiments were intended to develop procedures and identify drugs such as LSD that could be used in interrogations to weaken individuals and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate its subjects' mental states and brain functions, such as the covert administration of high doses of psychoactive drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, electroshocks,[4] hypnosis,[5][6] sensory deprivation, isolation, and verbal and sexual abuse, in addition to other forms of torture.[7][8]
MKUltra was preceded by two drug-related experiments, Project Bluebird and Project Artichoke.[9][10] It began in 1953, was reduced in scope in 1964 and 1967, and was halted in 1973.

Fans of the sixties will love it. A wild romp with a cast of characters that will be VERY familiar to those who came of age during the Peace Movement and Vietnam. The gang's all here: Kesey, Thompson, Kerouac, Cowboy Neal, Ginsberg...the only missing character is Charlie, and one must wonder why? Except, perhaps, Charles Manson is a story unto himself.
The plot centers around the CIA's early love affair with LSD and their efforts at world domination through mind control. But the author laces his tale with the irreverence and light-hearted goofiness that marked those years making the whole experience of reading this book a trip in its own right. There is plenty of darkness throughout, with rape and murder and political intrigue and assassinations but somehow the (orange) sunshine always breaks through.
This novel is a good, fun, fast read. It could serve quite nicely as a primer for those of younger generations interested the antics and depredations of those years, and it is certainly a nostalgic ride for those of us who were there.

The goal was to create what they believed was a more satisfying culture — free from consumerism, capitalism, and mass media — one that would be non-hierarchical, that would further world peace, and serve as a model for reforms to mainstream society.
